Finally upgraded from 1st Gen EOS Rebel - Canon 7D
« on: July 29, 2013, 08:57:15 AM »
I bought the Canon EOS Rebel, DS6041.  At the time it was the first DSLR you could but for under $1000 (it was $999 LOL).  Now, you can buy these on eBay for $35!  Anyway, I recently decided to get semi-serious about learning photography, so after a lot of research and soul-searching, I bought a new Canon 7D with the 28-135 Kit lens.   I also just bought a Canon 70-200mm f4L.  Just joined the forum and look forward to learning a lot!
These days, I sometimes expect to see Rod Serling step out of the shadows and point to a signpost up ahead!

Wow that is some upgrade!!  I have been thinking about upgrading my 40D and wondering whether to go for the new 70D or, since I don't expect to do much videoing, whether the 7D would be a better camera for me too.  I am seeing them at good prices just now, less than the 70D in fact.

Great move.  The resolution is the least of it.

Massively better viewfinder, live view, night and day AF (do read the manual)

Treat yourself to a UDMA CF card to make the most of the cameras speed.

Shoot RAW and apply luma NR.

Spend some time with the AF.  In 99.9% of reported cases it's the user that's faulty.

Bit of a learning curve all told, but you'll be fine.  The 7D remains a great camera, spend a hour or two getting to understand it and it can be an exceptional camera.

Definitely update the firmware, if it isn't already up to Firmware 2.0.3. Just be certain to follow all instructions, which include an instruction to completely power the camera down - including removing the main battery/batteries (if you have a grip) - for a minute or more.

Once you have done that, you can make very good use of UDMA7 CF cards. I have a couple Lexar 1000x 32GB cards, and they really do help...

The 7D is an awesome camera and one which I refuse to part with! You'll love it.

Just a few notes - the 7D works well with really sharp lenses. I've found the 17-55, 70-200 f/4 IS and 135L to all work superbly with it. Plus that center AF point becomes extra sensitive with lenses with f/2.8 aperture of wider. Make sure to calibrate your lenses using the AFMA.

Almost never use the auto AF selection. I would keep it on single point which works well for everyday shooting. The zone and expansion modes are good for tracking subjects.

The great thing about the 7D is you can customize it to however you shoot! Once you set up you camera and get used to it you'll be laughing!

Enjoy!
