Wow - I think the $549 price on the new 35mm f/2 IS may just be the trigger point for me.  That is a very strong lens for that price.

Hey Canon.  If you want to sell lenses just lower the price.  Mail-in rebates for a cash card are a great way of telling your customers you really don't care about their buying experience.  The real winners in mail -in rebates for a cash card are the banks.  The banks charge a fee for the card and often send you two cards so they can charge you two fees.  When the amount on the card is spent then new charges may apply.  Read the card holder agreement to see how this can cost the customer.  I already learned this lesson.  Mail in rebates for a cash card/cards is not what it appears to be.

Got that 35 f/2is for 549. So far I think this is a very good lens. The IS is giving you lots of flexibility on stills if shooting stationary objects. Have used it handheld down to 1/2 second with pretty good result I think. The build quality is also much better than the 50 f/1.4. Would suggest Canon make an similar update to that lens.

What is with the "mail in" rebate crap?  What happened to the instant rebates?  Now we will be back to jacking people around over the rebates -- mail in is a PITA (should be outlawed actually).

Another vote for instant rebates ony.  The mail-in rebates are only available to residents of the USA, Columbia and Puerto Rico.  What about us in the rest of the world?  We like discounts, too!

No rebates for 300mm f2.8 IS II? 

I was able to get 10% off my recent 300mm f/2.8 IS II at Focus Camera.  Really.  After talking to them (post-order) , it turns out they are an old NYC camera shop (with good BBB rating), that are trying to get with it in terms of their website so they are/were offering 10% off all orders for first-time customers.  Not sure they're still doing it, but if so, just check out their site, www.focuscamera.com and sign up for the email list when the little window pops up on your first visit.   They'll email you a promo code. Other than having to wait a few days for them get one from Canon USA and shipping ($35) it was a helluva deal.  It was a USA warranty, too, with case, and all.  Totally legit.

Mail in rebates should be outlawed? Really? Do you want more laws regulating how businesses and their customers interact?

Instant rebates or not all all? Fine! Don't buy. Or buy at the full price. Who are you hurting?

I'll buy all day long and then buy a postage stamp.

Fees to use? It's never happened to me. Usually it's a prepaid card that simply requires an online activation. Less commonly it's a check. Either works for me.

Overcharging on a prepaid card? Has never happened to me. Ever. In fact, most stores can make an inquiry as to how much is left so I can zero it out. It has never been a problem.

I've been looking at getting a macro lens, hoping to get a refurb but they haven't been showing up. These rebates are making new very attractively priced.

It should also be noted that many of the lenses on this list do have instant rebates rather than mail-ins.  Unfortunately this is not true of almost any of the L lenses.

Thanks for the info - I built my "Gear List" yesterday and received my $50 credit this morning.  My $99 40mm f/2.8 is on the way!  Half off a lens rocks - too bad you can't get deals like this on L lenses.
