New Sensor Tech in EOS 7D Mark II [CR2]
« on: June 19, 2014, 09:10:07 AM »
We’re told to definitely expect new sensor technology to be introduced in the Canon EOS 7D Mark II. This tech will be used in all forthcoming Canon DSLRs. What is it? We’re not 100% sure yet, though we’re told it’s definitely not a foveon type technology that we’ve previously seen in patents.

This may be one of Canon’s best kept secrets as it’s apparently going to be more than an “evolutionary” technology.

We’re filtering through a lot of emails about this new sensor tech and we’re not sure what’s true and what isn’t.

More to come… We’re not putting a [CR3] on this until we know what the new tech is.

Maybe it's compatibility with DPP 4.

Assuming it's a Bayer sensor with multiple pixels under each microlens (like the 70D), there's not a lot they can do to improve sensor performance that's outside the realm of read noise.  There are several ways to attack that one, and some of them involve doing clever things with the multiple pixels per microlens, such as reading out each one at a different ISO and then combining them, sort of like what Magic Lantern has done to increase DR.

Does anyone have an example of what Canon call revolutionary?

IS, USM, video in a full-frame dSLR, and dual-pixel technology come to mind.

Wow, this sounds exciting. Perhaps our five-year wait will actually turn out to have been worth it.

Right now I'll just about take anything though ... as long as it isn't 18 megapixels  ;)

I would be happy if this new sensor addresses the shadow noise problem at low ISO settings like 100 & 160.

IS, USM, video in a full-frame dSLR, and dual-pixel technology come to mind.

Their early 45-point AF sensor and ring USM lenses offered revolutionary and unrivalled AF performance for nearly a decade before Nikon finally came on board with their 51-point AF sensor in the D3.

Crossing my fingers... Not because I need to recover shadow details by 4 stops... Mostly for bragging rights... :D
