People make more money writing books and selling them then the people who buy a book and think reading it will sell products.  If the book is honest, it will discourage photographers from even trying, but then, it would not sell.

Very true indeed. The online stock companies give away high res images for peanuts, so no one is willing to spend real money on photography.

There is a reason that most of the biggest names in photography are now leading photo tours and workshops. It is the only way they can make a living in the current climate. After working myself at a photo lab for two decades at a low wage (and trying to sell photos on the side), I finally gave up and got a government job.

It all depends on how much you need to live on. its all relative.
So people have 5 kids and and a big mortgage. Some people have no kids, live on their own in a tent, and it helps if you dont live in the UK!!
