Real video samples from 5d Mark iii?
« on: March 04, 2012, 04:32:41 PM »
In searching for video samples from the to be released DSLRs from Canon and Nikon there are TONS of Youtube videos claiming authenticity, but I have my doubts.  Has anyone sorted out which are real (if any) and which are not (beyond those officially released)? It doesn't look like any official ones for the 5d Mark iii yet?

If this is actual video I would be worried.  I hope something sanctioned by Canon comes our way soon.  The 5d Mark ii's flaw for video for me is it's softness/lack of resolution, anything wide looks like there is a film over it compared to other cameras.  It's a beautiful image, and THE only thing I could not work around with careful shooting with the Mark ii was the softness of the video.

This one is from Canon France it says, and is 720p, includes slow motion, various shutter speeds.

Even though it doesn't indicate so when you go to full screen this video becomes full resolution and is amazing.  What I have been waiting for.

Take a look at this, I believe it to be real footage and I think it looks awesome. I can't wait to get technicolour running on this camera.

Seeing as the camera won't be available for at least another month, they couldn't possibly be genuine, apart for the multiple variations of the ones provided by Canon Professional Network (CPN) - the source of all these YouTube videos.

For instance, just a minute ago I came across this one (have seen already though on the weekend):

EOS 5D Mark III: Radball

Found this online...claims to be 1080p...though dunno if that is actual true...did look good full-screen from 1:00 on

Really like the colors. Wonder was it shot with new 24-70mm??

If these videos are representative of the typical video I am seriously rethinking the 5d Mark III.  With a few rare exceptions, they are all far too soft.

indeed, every video I've seen from the 5D3 looks soft, even the 1080p curtain flick "straight from the camera" that appeared yesterday and quickly disappeared

I don't know how they managed that, after using a sensor that's exactly 1080p times 3 so downsampling becomes easier

so yes, it has no moire/aliasing, massively improved high ISO, and hopefully a better codec (no all-I samples out yet), but limited to 8-bit 4:2:0 and looking this soft... lots of people seriously rethinking 5D3 for video right now

I so prefer the ergonomics and great photos of a 5d compared to my GH2, but you are correct, all the things I could control by shooting video carefully, even doc style (ie hold the camera very still, very slow pans) are fixed, but the thing I could not improve--video quality--seems no better.  And while for youtube who cares but for professional delivery its got to really have the resolution especially for the wide stuff of nature, landscapes, cityscapes. My HDV cameras had more resolution.

What makes you think it is 4:2:0? The bit-rate numbers suggest that it is 4:2:2.

It's so hard to tell what you're really going to get out of a camera until you get one in hand and shoot it in your own world. There are clips out there that make the RED Epic look bad, and clips that make a camera phone look good. I'm not going to judge too much unless I can see the original file. Web compression introduces far too many variables.

Well I would like to believe that's the case, it's unclear why Canon has not made arrangements themselves to post video of the highest quality at 1080p, or enabled a shooter to provide it.  I am watching and waiting.  I have one on pre-order.
