Ok, so I just got the 600EX-RT and decided to check it out on my latest muses - butterflies that come to rest in my garden at night. Luckily they have a late start - well, later than me anyway... So, here they are: Taken around 6:45 am. with my 100-400 @400. f11, 1/800. The Common Mormon was ISO 400 and the Tailed Jay was ISO 800. Comments/critique very welcome.

Tailed Jay

Common Mormon

Oh! and the images have been reduced to 25% to make them web friendly. No other edit was done on them.

ISO 51200

Nice capture, almost like it was shot thru linen.

Thanks! The image quality at ISO 50K is far better than anybody has a right to expect. It was extraordinarily dark in there; the light source was streetlights outside the windows. We were about 20 feet from the windows.

Settings:
ISO 51200
24mm
f/1.4
1/15

Processed in LR 4. This is the sort of thing I was hoping the Mk II would do, at least up to ISO 12800.

two images taken with my eos 5d mark III. I very much like the camera for its much improved ruggedness, lcd display and foremost its really excellent and dramatically more accurate auto focus system. i have a much better connect to the mark III than the mark II - ergonomically... pictures shot at 800 and 3200 (!) iso, post edit in LR4.
Lovely pictures! What is the deal with the pin holding the shell of the pupa? Also what lens did you use?

these pictures were taken at a nearby market garden where they pinned pupas to breed butterflies. the one on the top eclosed just a short while before the picture was taken. i used the canon macro lens EF 100mm 1:2.8 L IS

So here is one more picture of my latest (but one) muse:
5D3, 20-105 @105, 600EX-RT, no UV filter ;), 1/200, f16, Auto ISO (so 400 ISO)

I did not notice that a leaf was blocking the flash and that the middle of my subject would not get the flash!

Anyway, like they say in India, "Luck by chance". Or, in reality, luck by mistake... Whatever...

What I love about the picture is the contrast of the subject and the background. More specifically, where the subject is lighted by the flash, the background is dark and the other way around (except for the eye)...

What I do not like is that (and I did not know that at the time when I took the picture...) the texture of the leaf causes light to reflect from the flash and there are a whole load of reflective points I can see on the leaf. Do you know what one can do about that?

Well, enough language. Here are the pixels - sorry, I downsized it as it looks better that way (to me at least...)

Not a compelling image by any means but does show off how a high iso image can be quite usable....

ISO 20,000 with a little NR and Sharpening in LR4.

Shot in the dark w/ 300f2.8 at 1/100 sec handheld.

Also, heavily cropped to about 1/4 of the original frame.

Natural light, minimal edits in CS6. Second image used PP for edits.
A few cameras (Canon, Fuji & Sony) and lenses and a lot of creative energy and imagination.

A few recent ones. Hopefully I'll get out on Saturday, I have an outing planned for Sunday that's a little out of my comfort zone, although I should also get a chance to photograph something I used to photograph in my teens.
