Canon 300D plus 20/2.8, stitched.

We climbed a mountain called East Peak.  The temp did not go above -20C/0F all day, and there were gale-force winds at the summit.  My gear functioned flawlessly.

Not to pooh-pooh, but the implication is "my shots are as good as yours even though I'm shooting with crap. Still, I don't see a lot of shots taken under challenging conditions. I have some really good shots taken with a 450D, but they are shots with subjects that don't move with pretty light. Even iPhones take great shots under those conditions. I'm not buying a 5D3 or a d800 to shoots sunsets and flowers.

To me, the implication is that you don't need cutting-edge gear to create enjoyable photographs. It's not so much about extremes as it is about just chilling out and enjoying some photos. It's a breath of fresh air to put the latest gear and rumors aside and just look at some photos for a change.

Half of the people on here need to realise this isnt a forum for pros it is for everyone and this attitude to the latest and greatest is rubbish. Photography should be enjoyed by everyone regardless of their kit and not to be fealt inferior for it.

One of my favourite motor sport photographers (Dennis Noten) still uses a 450D and a 40D and check out his flickr stream. Incredible.

I think you missed the point slightly. This thread is not saying new cameras are not any better (I'm planning on a 5D3 purchase shortly myself). What I took the meaning to be is 'get out and enjoy yourself, improve your technique, and you will get *even more* out of a new more capable camera'.

But as you've laid the gauntlet down, so to speak, take a look at these, shot indoors, in very contrasty but essentially low light, of very fast and random moving fencers. Kit is an EOS3 film camera, with various lenses, including 70-200 f4, 15mm fisheye. Film, if memory serves, was Tri-X. I'm sure I could have done technically better with a high ISO 5D3, but what the heck, I enjoyed it, I'm happy with the results - very challenging, and it stretched me quite a bit to get these.

I have been lurking as a guest on this forum for some time, but the greatness of this thread has convinced me to sign up.

The first two of these were taken on my ancient 400d with (I think) a kit lens. The third was taken on a Powershot 1000. Now I have a 5D3, but seem travel to fun places less frequently.

Going right back to 1994 on my Dad's Praktika (my Zenith was too heavy to take) for the first one, then the second two were with my first DSLR, the 400D. The log cabin is still my most viewed image by a signficant margin.

AJ, that last picture with the mountains and the beautiful pink sky is magnificent. Where was it?

Upper Kananaskis Lake, west of Calgary, Canada.  Shot in early December.  The funny looking clouds are due to high winds aloft.  These winds can set up an inversion resulting in valley clouds.

It's not so much about extremes as it is about just chilling out and enjoying some photos. It's a breath of fresh air to put the latest gear and rumors aside and just look at some photos for a change.

Plus, the beauty of getting those photos is you also get to experience those things. And a reminder that the best picture is the one you took because you had a camera there, even if it wasn't the best camera.

I don't even need a picture, I just REALLY want to sit and see that sunset in AJ's last picture. The pink is so vivid and textured.
