What's going on?
I've been asking a few people on their thoughts about the chances of seeing new pro bodies in 2009. The general consensus has been that we might see a 1D near the end of 2009 and will not see a new 1Ds until 2010.

1D
Since the sub mirror fix, the 1D has been selling relatively well. Obviously not as well as Canon hoped before the release. People have had very good experiences with the camera and the positive press from users has helped with a resurgence of sales.

1Ds
It has sold about as well as planned. It's a high margin camera with a price tag that probably won't be staying stable through 2009. You can expect solid price drops. It's a great camera, with amazing resolving power that impresses anyone that uses it. Like the 1D, it's just missing the “sexiness” of the D3… whatever that means.

Nikon D3/D3x
It appears Nikon will be launching a 24mp version of the D3 on the 1st of December if our friend at Nikon Rumors is correct. This will be sure to cause a lot of Canonites to become quite angry and green. I can almost see the forum threads now!

2009 isn't going to be Canon's year of “wow”(sorry Microsoft) unless you want a new Rebel or a 60D. So sit tight, and enjoy making great images with your currect EOS-1's… I will be.

  • I couldn’t agree more. Any 5D Mk 2 owner who turns green and burns up the message boards obviously isn’t out taking pictures with the new camera! Why did they get it then? What gives???

  • “2009 isn’t going to be Canon’s year of “wow”(sorry Microsoft) unless you want a new Rebel or a 60D.”

I still think this is bit brave for Canon to do so, to say the least. That should result in losing market shares to Nikon, especially if the D3x comes out as rumoured and is able to keep up with the expectations.
    (BTW: A friend of mine just switched from a 5D1 and a 1D2 to a Nikon D3 and a D700 this week.)

  • I might be wrong, but over all that, I have the feeling that even the 5DMKII hype is going down. Don’t get me wrong, demand will still be high at first, but maybe less than forecast if price stay the same for the next 4-6 months (supposing that availability will be there :-))

  • PS

At some point there is going to be too many pixels on a sensor. From the reviews I’ve read they are finding this out with the 50D 4.7 microns is too small and I’m not going to be jealous of 3MP difference anyway.

  • At the end of 2009? LOL.

Right, let’s see what the D400 can do.
I’m tired of Canon sitting on their heels. No way am I touching the Mk III.

  • I think if Nikon comes out with the D3x or D4 by years end, it will be a matter of months the Canon will come back with the 1Ds series and make it primarily a studio camera to make up the pixel count. The AF system will just be a small upgrade as well as the ISO the the new Digic IV. Or come out with a new 2D/3D camera just to compete with Nikon until their 1D series is competitive. As a sport photographer I can’t wait for the 1D 3 replacement. The 5D MK 2 does look promising to take up that small gap Canon will lose to Nikon in 09′.

  • Let the Canon/Nikon War begin! Its good to have competition and I think the consumers will be the ones benefiting from it. Assuming they stop the megapixel race and work on great IQ and ISO, plus enhancing the movie capabilities.

  • There is no need for Canon to replace the 1Ds Mark III soon. Even if Nikon releases a 24 MP camera, there is no sign that technology has improved enough to make a substantial difference between it and the Canon. It will be a camera that can be a step to higher resolution for those who own Nikkor Lenses and accessories, they do need to do this.

Canon does need to upgrade the 1Ds Mark III. I’ve been putting off buying one after reading of all the complaints buyers are still having with it, resale value is horrible. Even if I got a good one, when I decided to upgrade, the old one would not have a good resale value, since buyers of used equipment are afraid of getting a bad one. I’d buy a 1D mark II, but I need liveview. So the 5D MK II is what I’m getting for now, and I may shoot in one of the small raw modes much of the time.

  • i preordered a 5d2. nikon d3 II sounds awesome… good for them. i have always look at nikon as the top tier 35mm camera maker, and canon as a close second.

who really cares its just a camera guys.. just get a camera that works for you and at the price you’re comfortable with.

  • Nikon vs Canon war? Well it is business, and consumers benefit from real competition, so bring it on!

As for switching from Canon to Nikon… I’ve thought about it alot. I was originally in the Nikon camp, but they didn’t have a DSLR that was up to snuff when I went with a 20D and a kit of L lens. What would make me switch? Simple: If I don’t get my 5D Mark II by January 10th when I am packing for a three week trip overseas, then I would very definitely consider. L lens have high resale value.

    I hope my Sept 17 pre-order with Amazon was a good choice…

  • I know I’m the only one, but I still believe Canon miss de boat when they didn’t release their 5DMKII last year.

Lance, Canon in French will be more “the sexiest thing around” Quelque chose de Canon, means something really hot… which I firmly believe 6 years when I switch to Canon… but now, the flower is fading… and the Phoenix rising. I’m not pro Nikon, but I must admit that for their size, they are hitting Canon really hard.

  • Who Cares. I have some really nice fixed Canon L lenses. Nikon doesn’t have their equivalences and right now they don’t have anything that competes with the 5D2.
I know that is a different thread but…

The reason Canon didn’t release a 5D2 last year is because there was nothing to compete with it. Nikon JUST came out with a FF sensor.

  • It’s a real shame that there’s the whole brand fanboyism, as it ruins the mood of photography. As has already been mentioned, as each company brings out an improved camera, the others are forced to play catchup (I really hope that Fuji and Pentax have something good in the works).

It’ll be interesting to see if the RED “super” sensors (Would love to know if they actually have that 617 sensor as a real working prototype, instead concept) push the big three to lay into R&D and risk a possible foray into MF.

But honestly. People have been taking downright stunning photos for many many years with what would now be considered sub-par equipment. Advancement doesn’t equal better photos, it just means some things become easier to do.

  • Keith, the real reason why Canon didn’t release a 5D2 last year it’s because they played the slow update game and realize that Nikon shift them… because of their laziness. That surely hit revenue and it seems that now, they want us to pay for their mess by creating all this hype around availability issue.

I love Canon, I have more L lenses (8 L + 2 non-L) than I should. I’m a real supporter. But to be honest, I believe Canon failed in the area
1- the 1 year delay of the 5DII
2- the mess with the 1DMKIII
    3- the 50D 15MP ( why so many pixels anyway…)

It’s not because I have Canon’s DNA that I can’t be objective about their issues. I’m not playing the fanboy game but I would like to see them a bit more proactive than reactive. The new 5DMKII seems to bit on the proactive side… but if availability is as bad as we are hearing, they might loose that proactive touch for the new Nikon D3x or D4.

  • Nikon has very nice cameras, the GUI and ergonomics are great. I am still loving Nikon but the gap was huge for many years.

Nikon trusted in NON-FULL-FRAME cameras, then they designed non full frame lenses, and now they need to work on new lenses to fit the new FF cameras.

Well I think they played the slow update, I don’t know about the shift with 5D class. Maybe the 1d. There was nothing out to compete with the 5D and people were still buying up the original and now 3 years later Nikon comes out with the D700. I don’t think the D700 was impressive enough to make too many 5D owners jump ship when they new something had to be coming shortly.

From what I had gathered (depending on who/what you believe) they contemplated a 16 MP update to the 5D but didn’t release it. I’m glad because this year we get a 21 MP.

If they had released a 16MP people would have complained a 4MP upgrade wasn’t worth it and a 21 back then would have cut the 1ds3’s throat. And today everyone would be complaining because Sony has a 24 MP and Nikon may have one coming also.

I don’t know how to tell Canon to please everyone, but I am happy to know I’m very high up on a list to get the 5D2 when it arrives.

  • LordBug, you are so true. People took great pictures way before the Canon 5D, 1D mk I etc. They will continue to take great pictures long after the new Nikon or Canon will be released.

I am personally awaiting anything new high-end released in 2009 as I have a saved up for my first 1D and the money is just burning a huge hole in my pocket right now. Will it make me take better photos when I get it? I doubt it, but I still want it! ;-)

    I’m a gear-head so I can’t help my self ;-)

  • Hello

The EOS 1Ds Mark III has a great price know. I guess when the 5D MII is no the market (available) will go down at 6500dlls.

  • To be honest, the Canon EOS 1D Mark III is already enough to hold the Nikon D3. I don’t see what’s the big deal except people being swayed by marketing and good reviews, and jumping ship. Yes, Nikon’s good now, and they finally got there. Note the word finally.

  • We’ve had the Melbourne cup happening lately and there was an exhibition to see with amazing PJ images shot of horses and riders. It was interesting to see that images up to the year 2000 had great image quality, then suddenly the image quality became horrible (obviously through the change from 35mm at its best to early digital cameras). The images from 2007 were looking great again… To put all the hype about digital and its advancement into perspective: I believe the greatest achievement has been that today any digital SLR body can produce equal or better IQ images than film. So we have a base of quality against which we can’t loose, anything else is just an extra. In this sense I believe it doesn’t really matter what Canon or Nikon will bring out next year!

  • What happened to the new Canon 24mm f/1.4????
And will there be updated versions of the L 35mm and 50 mm in 2009? Will Canon produce something to rival the Nikon 12-24 f/2.8 zoom? I mean, how long will Canon be without a reply to this – http://www.16-9.net/ ?

  • 24 f/1.4L II will be coming along soon.

Nikkor 14-24 is a fantastic lens, as is the Canon 14 II. I had much better results with the Canon than 16-9 did.

I don’t expect Canon to ever release such a lens, it’s a niche market thing. Canon is going to sell a lot more 16-35’s and 17-40’s than Nikon will of the 14-24. One big reason is you can’t filter the Nikon (easily). I know at least 2 landscape photographers that have taken a pass on the 14-24 for that reason.

Canon needs to update the 17-40. It would be a much better seller, and could be just as sharp.

    We’ll see.

  • Why will Canon owners be angry and green? Nikon have a nasty habit of releasing a pro camera then improving it with an ‘x’ version less than a year later. I know of a pro who always upgrades to the improved version. He won’t admit it but I know for a fact he’s sick of shelling out for a new camera every twelve months. And his pictures aren’t any better. At least when Canon launch a camera they have he decency to let you use it for a few years before asking for your cash again. As for all this whinging about resolution, go and shoot some medium format film if you want it BIG. There’s plenty of cheap systems out there. Or have you forgotten how?
