Firmware: Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 IS STM Macro v2.0.0

Firmware: Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 IS STM Macro v2.0.0

By Canon Rumors | March 19, 2019 | Canon Firmware

Canon has released new firmware for the RF 35mm f/1.8 IS STM Macro.

Firmware Version 2.0.0 incorporates the following enhancement:

  • Support for the “panning” scene mode with the EOS RP has been added. The “panning” scene mode reduces subject blurring and blurs the background when the lens is mounted to the EOS RP.

This firmware update is for lenses equipped with firmware version older than 2.0.0. If the lens firmware is already Version 2.0.0, it is not necessary to update the firmware.

The version of the lens firmware can be checked on the camera menu.

Firmware: SIGMA updates multiple lenses for EOS R compatibility

Firmware: SIGMA updates multiple lenses for EOS R compatibility

By Canon Rumors | March 15, 2019 | Third Party Lenses

From SIGMA:

Thank you for purchasing and using our products. We would like to announce that a new firmware update for SIGMA’s interchangeable lenses for CANON EF mount listed below is now available.

This firmware allows compatibility with Canon’s in-camera Lens Aberration Correction function to enable correction matching the optical characteristics of each lens. It also corrects the phenomenon that abnormal images appear or operation errors occur when the function is enabled. In addition, it improves functionality. Furthermore, there is an improvement to the phenomena particular to some lenses when they are used in combination with the Canon “EOS R” and their “Mount Adapter EF-EOS R”, or “Control Ring Mount Adapter EF-EOS R”. This was previously reported in our announcement of January 16th, 2019.

Canon talks IBIS and EOS M in a recent interview

By Canon Rumors | March 14, 2019 | Canon EOS R

Amateur Photographer had a chance to interview Canon executives at the recent CP+ show in Yokohama, Japan. They touched on the usual things going on in the industry.

Canon also confirms (again) that IBIS is coming to future EOS R camera bodies, as well as saying the EOS M and EF-M will be around for a while. They also didn’t close the door on an APS-C EOS R camera.

Canon publishes a paper discussing a new 3.4 μm pixel pitch global shutter CMOS image sensor with dual in-pixel charge domain memory

Canon publishes a paper discussing a new 3.4 μm pixel pitch global shutter CMOS image sensor with dual in-pixel charge domain memory

By Canon Rumors | March 13, 2019 | Canon DSLR News

The Japanese Journal of Applied Physics has published a Canon Inc. paper on a global shutter entitled  “A 3.4 μm pixel pitch global shutter CMOS image sensor with dual in-pixel charge domain memory” by Masahiro Kobayashi, Hiroshi Sekine, Takafumi Miki, Takashi Muto, Toshiki Tsuboi, Yusuke Onuki, Yasushi Matsuno, Hidekazu Takahashi, Takeshi Ichikawa, and Shunsuke Inoue.

From the paper:

In this paper, we describe a newly developed 3.4 μm pixel pitch global shutter CMOS image sensor (CIS) with dual in-pixel charge domain memories (CDMEMs) has about 5.3 M effective pixels and achieves 19 ke− full well capacity, 30 ke−/lxcenterdots sensitivity, 2.8 e- rms temporal noise, and −83 dB parasitic light sensitivity. In particular, we describe the sensor structure for improving the sensitivity and detail of the readout procedure. Furthermore, this image sensor realizes various readout with dual CDMEMs. For example, an alternate multiple-accumulation high dynamic range readout procedure achieves 60 fps operation and over 110 dB dynamic range in one-frame operation and is suitable in particular for moving object capturing. This front-side-illuminated CIS is fabricated in a 130 nm 1P4M with light shield CMOS process.

I don’t speak or truly understand the language of physics, but Richard over at Canon News does and has a broken this paper down to make it a bit more understandable for us scientific mortals.

The future of the Canon EOS-1D X series [CR1]

The future of the Canon EOS-1D X series [CR1]

By Canon Rumors | March 12, 2019 | Canon DSLR Rumors

The Canon EOS-1D X Mark II was announced on February 1, 2016, which makes it just over 3 years old. Higher end Canon cameras seem to have a product lifecycle of 4-5 years now.

We were told last month that testing for an EOS-1D X Mark II replacement has begun.

We’re now being told to expect an announcement for the camera between Q4 of 2019 and Q2 of 2020.  As we’ve mentioned on a few occasions, the Summer Games are in Tokyo, Japan beginning in July of 2020.
