Patent: 360 degree camera from Canon

Patent: 360 degree camera from Canon

By Canon Rumors | October 11, 2018 | Canon Patents

LetsGoDigital has found a Canon patent application with the USPTO for a 360-degree camera, the patent was published on October 4, 2018

The device has 8 cameras that can zoom independently of each other and will overlap each other to make image stitching a breeze. The camera can capture full 360-degree images as well as panoramics.

The camera also comes with a built-in tripod for easy placement anywhere. The device can also be controlled remotely via a computer or smartphone.

It also looks like the camera has various lighting options built-into the orb-shaped body.

This is a pretty detailed patent for what appears to be a product close to production. If we’re going to see this type of camera, I would think CES in January will be the place Canon might show it off.

Is the Canon EOS 5DS series to be replaced by a mirrorless camera? [CR1]

Is the Canon EOS 5DS series to be replaced by a mirrorless camera? [CR1]

By Canon Rumors | October 10, 2018 | Canon DSLR Rumors

We’ve been told a couple of times in very vague terms that Canon may be looking to replace the EOS 5DS and EOS 5DS R with a higher megapixel EOS R series camera.

The high megapixel 5DS series from Canon is a niche product in the lineup and it would make some sense to move this series over to the EOS R side of things. I don’t believe the average 5DS user would be all that bothered by adapting EF lenses, especially with the adapter options available to EOS R shooters. Landscape shooters will likely love the circular polarizer and ND filter adapters available from Canon.

We believe that a native wide angle zoom will be coming sometime in 2019, and that would help with the transition to the EOS R system for shooters that don’t want to go the adapter router.

Take this with a grain of salt, as I’m not sure Canon will be ready to kill off a DSLR line this soon in favour of an infant full frame mirrorless system. That said, I have no information about how well the EOS 5DS series of cameras sold, so this could be the obvious line to kill off first.

Canon EOS 7D Mark II listed as discontinued, but no reason for excitement

Canon EOS 7D Mark II listed as discontinued, but no reason for excitement

By Canon Rumors | October 9, 2018 | Canon DSLR Rumors

A couple of people have written in about the Canon EOS 7D Mark II being listed as discontinued at major retailers. Unfortunately, this is not a sign of an imminent replacement.

While the Canon EOS 7D Mark II body only is indeed discontinued, this was to make room for the Canon EOS 7D Mark II with the W-E1 Wi-Fi adapter, which has taken the place of the EOS 7D Mark II body only purchase option.

So while a Canon EOS 7D Mark III is coming, we don’t think we’ll see it for at least another  6 months. We haven’t received any suggestions of a replacement being imminent.
