February 20, 2019, Saitama, Japan Tamron Co., Ltd. (President & CEO: Shiro Ajisaka), a leading manufacturer of optics for diverse applications, announces the development of two new lenses for full-frame DSLR cameras—the 35-150mm F/2.8-4 Di VC OSD (Model A043) zoom lens and the SP 35mm F/1.4 Di USD (Model F045) fixed focal lens; and a new high-speed ultra-wide-angle zoom lens for Sony E-mount full-frame mirrorless cameras—the 17-28mm F/2.8 Di III RXD (Model A046).

Tamron will display these new lenses at CP+ 2019, the World Premiere show for camera and photo imaging, beginning February 28 through March 3, 2019 at Pacifico Yokohama and at the Wedding and Portrait Professionals International (WPPI), February 27 through March 3, 2019 in Las Vegas.

The lenses are expected to launch in the middle of 2019.

Dynamic range comparison between the EOS RP, EOS 6D Mark II and EOS R

The most complained about specification in cameras is currently “dynamic range”. It seems to be the current still photography performance metric people are most passionate about when it comes to image sensors.

Jared AKA FroKnowsPhoto has decided to a quick and dirty comparison between the Canon EOS RP, Canon EOS 6D Mark II and Canon EOS R. He was unable to do this until the RAW converter for the EOS RP became available.

Lensrentals.com assembles a lens that can see behind itself

Lensrentals.com, more noteably Roger and Aaron have been working on this crazy fisheye lens for quite some time. They’ve now posted an article and video about the assembly of the C-4 Optics 4.9mm f/3.5 fisheye with a 270-degree field of view. You read that correctly, this lens can see behind itself.

You guys have watched us gut a lot of lenses and cameras over the years. So I thought it would be fun for you to see us put one together from scratch. Compared to many of the lenses we’ve taken apart, this is all mechanical lens is rather simple: no focus motors, image stabilizers, etc. But even a simple lens is a very complex structure. This post will probably give you a good idea of how much mechanical design is required to make even a very basic lens.

The lens is also unique; it’s a prototype C-4 Optics 4.9mm f/3.5 circular fisheye. It’s a massive lens giving a 270-degree field of view, meant for immersive video and specialty shots. To give you an idea of what 270 degrees means, the lens sees behind itself. An ultra-wide 15mm fisheye lens gives a 180-degree field of view while an 11mm rectilinear lens is less than 120 degrees. Tamron to announce two new lenses ahead of CP+ this month

Everyone is announcing their new wares ahead of CP+ this month, the show begins on February 28, 2019. Tamron will be announcing two new lenses for the EF mount (and others) in the next few days.

The new Tamron lenses to be announced:

  • Tamron 35-150mm f/2.8-4 VC USD
  • Tamron SP 35mm f/1.4 USD

Tamron is apparently making some bold claims about the SP 35mm f/1.4 USD, claiming that it will be the best 35mm lens ever. Thankfully, we won’t be waiting too long to find out if that’s a legitimate claim or not.

A very vague roadmap for Canon’s 2019 came to us over the weekend. It seems like the same sort of vague roadmap that happens at internal marketing and sales meetings. Take all of this with a grain of salt.

We’re told to expect an “exciting” new cinema camera, possible ahead of NAB in April. However, the announcement date isn’t confirmed as of yet. There has been some talk about a follow-up to the Cinema EOS C300 Mark II. We’ve heard that there could possibly be an 8K “upgrade option” for such a camera. However, that is unconfirmed at this time.

Canon will likely announce PL mount versions of their CN-E prime lenses ahead of NAB in April.

We’re also told that a “pro” DSLR is coming from Canon sometime in 2019, though the model name wasn’t mentioned. “Pro” can fall anywhere between the EOS 7D Mark II and EOS-1D X Mark II depending on what a person considers “professional” to be. We haven’t heard anything that we feel is legitimate about either camera mentioned. This bit of information about the EOS 80D and EOS 7D Mark II was recycled around other rumors sites yesterday, but since we posted it a month or so ago, we haven’t heard anything else on the topic.

The same person also said to expect a “pro” EOS R camera body announcement in very late 2019, but shipping may not occur until 2020. We’ve been told that a high-resolution EOS R is next in the pipeline and may qualify as “pro”.

All of this seems plausible, and with products that are far out, most information is going to be pretty vague.

We’re told that Canon may announce two more RF mount lenses in 2019, but it’s possible they will get pushed into early 2020.

Apparently, the original plan was to announce the development of 8 lenses with the EOS RP, but for whatever reason, that plan was scrapped. Lens launches have always been a moving target.

I’m not a video guy (though that is changing), and I usually err on the side of Canon when it comes to the video features that they put into cameras. I realize a lot of what they may omit from a camera can sometimes come down to reliability and usability, as they want to make a creative tool that you don’t really have to worry about. I think anyone can admit Canon is probably at the top of the heap when it comes to these sorts things, even if the spec list doesn’t set the world on fire.

It never fails, once Canon announces a new camera, the inevitable question we receive is “what’s coming next?” The launch of the EOS RP (preorder here) was expected and has received a lot of positive feedback from the still shooters, though the video guys seem to mostly be annoyed by the lack of 1080p at 24fps, which we also feel was a strange thing to omit.

We have some ideas about what’s coming next, and we’ve heard a few bits of information in regards to the EOS R system, so we’ll try to quickly break down what we’ve been told is coming mixed with a little bit of what we think is coming.

The Canon EOS RP was officially announced yesterday (or today for some folks) and has received a pretty positive reception. Canonites are a passionate bunch and I’ve been very impressed with the reception that EOS RP has received.

Imaging Resource had a chance to sit down with Canon execs to talk all things Canon EOS RP.

Some questions we think a lot of you want answers to?

The 26.2mp sensor is the exact same sensors that appeared in the EOS 6D Mark II. Some adjustments to the microlenses were needed for light angles and things like that, but everything else is identical. The DIGIC 8 processor in the EOS RP is the exact same as any other DIGIC 8 processor as well.
