*Update* We have been told that both the RF 24mm f/1.4L USM and the RF 50mm f/1.4L (Yes, an L and without IS) are part of a new “hybrid family” of RF prime lenses. The RF 35mm f/1.4L USM will come first around the same time as the EOS R5 Mark II and the RF 24mm f/1.4L USM and RF 50 f/1.4L USM coming in Q4 of 2024.
The Canon RF prime lineup has been one of sadness and frustration for some shooters, but it looks like that is going to be rectified soon for a lot of shooters.
Back in September we mentioned that an RF 50mm f/1.4 was in the pipeline, but we didn't have any idea when it was coming. There have also been a fair number of detailed patents for such an optical formula. One of which has a new kind of composite element. You can check that patent breakdown from Richard here.
We already know that the RF 35mm f/1.4L USM is finally being announced sometime in the next month or two, but we are also reportedly getting an RF 24mm f/1.4L USM around the same time. We don't have exact dates, but lens announcements always seem to be fluid.
The RF 50mm f/1.4 IS USM will not be an L lens, and like the other new RF prime lenses, there are going to be some video focused features. No one has broken down that means for us, but we don't have long to wait.
The Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 was around for 30+ years, so don't expect a modern version for the RF mount to be the same low price, but it will definitely be well below the $1000 mark.
Simon of Ordinary Filmmaker fame let me know that he has good information about both of these lenses, and after some due diligence, we think he's got the skinny.
It looks like 2024 really is going to be a really exciting time for Canon shooters the world over and these lenses hitting the market will make a lot of people happy.
Please keep things civil, if you have an issue... just move along. The information here is pretty solid.
Well, that fell apart rather quickly.
Tamron and Sigma rule!
PS: I wrote this, being in a state of complete sloshedness...
But I'm still hoping for a fast 14mm RF prime next to the 24mm!
And I hope they'll update the RF 15-35 f/2.8 (without IS to make it smaller) sometime in the next 1-2 years as well.
And I’m still waiting for an RF 28mm f/1.8 USM
Well, sources come and go. People move on to other things in life. Sometimes we hear things that we can't post until someone else does... but we can verify it.
This launch cycle is unlike anything I have seen before.
And the 50mm IS sounds really nice. I just hope that the video centric feature won't make it less useful for photographers.
