It looks like one of Canon's new cameras is going to be called the EOS RC. Details are quite limited at this time, but it comes from a source with an almost impecable record. What is the EOS RC?

We think the “RC” tells us it's a video focused hybrid camera, we have been told that a Sony FX competitor is coming from Canon, but we don't know if it's full-frame or APS-C.

We have reported in the past that Canon was going to introduce new camera segments in their line-up for APS-C, but it's possible that we'll see something for full-frame as well.

There has also been talk that an EOS M6 Mark II style body would be coming, which will probably be one of the most welcomed type of cameras currenty.

We don't have anything more about an EOS RC at this time.

  1. Maybe R5c successor but dropping the R5 association?
    That makes sense. There was the 1D C that was based on the 1D X, and the R5 C based on the R5. I suspect Canon is moving away from having a cinema-focused ILC being a derivative of a particular camera, and the RC will be a separate line with new features, probably lacking the dual-boot capability of the R5 C.

    Or maybe Canon is launching a new line of EOS drones, and RC = remote control. 😉

  2. I can see a FF FX3 type camera with C80 video specs and R6III photo specs.
    Basically a R6III with non cropped 4K 120 Clog2 but no evf. No nd's but IBIS.
    If it's smaller than the R5II I'd buy it in a heartbeat. I love my R5II and R3 but I'm digging something smaller too.
    They're already getting a good ROI out of the R3 sensor tech: R3, R6III, C80, C400

  3. I would love a compact camera like a M6II (at least more compact than those Fuji cams). Well built. Some weather protection. Aps-c would be ok for me. Give me a nice pancake lens (28/35/40mm equiv.) with F 2.0 and IBIS and this would be my new everyday camera and i finally would sell my Ricoh GRIII.

    This is my initial thought also.. Canon’s own FX3. I also think the “C” stands for Cinema =)

    This will be the smallest Cinema Line camera, and the C80 will be its big brother. It will replace the R5C, so it removes association to the R5 series and have a life of its own. It’ll take photos, but with no EVF (a la FX3) and it will probably dual boot like the R5C did.. to bridge the gap again of Cinema and Photo. In my opinion, the R5C was a great experiment but didn’t do so much to differentiate itself from the R5 (visibly to the casual consumers). The people who left Canon for Sony FX3’s video focused body wanted something as compact from Canon as the FX3, and to me this is their answer. I think it’ll be Full Frame, it’ll be based on the R5ii sensor, and will be ahead of the FX3 and FX3ii in that it’ll shoot 8k like the R5 series with built in raw. I don’t see them rolling with a 4k based video, as the C70/C80 fill that gap, and it won’t have built in XLR’s, NDs, etc so it doesn’t compete with them either. It’ll be a mini R5ii, with fan and no evf, with full size hdmi, timecode, and 3.5 mic inputs. Hopefully they do release an XLR handle/cage like setup or make it easy for 3rd party smallrig type companies to make one.

    In Order -> RC -> C70 -> C80 -> C300 -> C400 -> C500

    Compared to Sony:

    Canon RC = FX3

    Canon C400 = FX6

    Canon C500 = FX9

    Canon C70/C80 = No direct Sony competitor.

  5. A newer line that's hybrid use would be preferable.

    RC10 = M6iii worthy successor
    RC8 = R8 without EVF

    RC7 = EVF-less flagship APS-C, competes with FX30 and has stronger photo specs.

    RC6 = R6iii(?) without EVF and has ND. Ofc clog2&oversampled 4k60/100/120 is available.

  6. Wild guess: It'll be APS-C, it'll have IBIS and it's the reason that Canon let Sigma and Tamron introduce APS-C R-mount lenses.
    It can be full frame and goes woth the new VCM primes

  7. Unless it has a built in EVF I'm not interested. At the moment I'm looking for the equivalent of the highly-overpriced (in Canadian dollars) Fuji X100 for street photography, either with a fixed or detachable lens and a viewfinder. It's to replace my SL1. I've narrowed the choices to the R10, which is half the price of the X00 VI. I can't justify the difference. Wish Canon had an X100 competitor.

  8. OMG, so far we know NOTHING but the name of the camera and suggestions are running wild 🤣 Funnily, the guesses range from a successor of the EOS m6 (currently a 500 € camera) to a R5C successor (a 4k plus € camera) while covering anything inbetween, below and above 🤣🤣 crazy times

  9. If FF: I buy and fit it with the tiny but great RF 28mm f/2,8
    If APS/C: I'll hesitate...
    Assuming you mean a camera in the style of the EOS M6(mkii) I'd absolutely agree with your statement.
    I am looking for a smaller camera for hiking and such, but I feel there are more options to come and I am in absolutely no hurry right now.
