Sony, powered by the success of the VLOGCAM ZV-E10 took over the top spot in the BCN rankings for June. BCN reports on domestic Japanese sales and aggregates around 50% of the sales in Japan to come up with their statistics. But this is only a Japanese viewpoint, and Japan's been strange lately when it comes to camera gear.

According to BCN, Sony has a 33.3% market share in Japan versus Canon's 25.7% – or a 7.6% lead on camera sales in Japan. To put this into context, Japan only sells around 40,000 mirrorless cameras per month, so the difference between the 1st and 2nd is around 3,000 camera sales. I had to get that in there before anyone decided to buy their Canon is Doomed t-shirt.

However, the Japanese market is important to Canon (and other Japanese camera companies) because it's their home turf.

Canon's EOS R50 and EOS continue to do well (placing 2nd and 3rd respectively), and it's not surprising to me that the R100 isn't doing so well. The fact that the R100 can't crack the top 10 in BCN which is usually about the low-cost deals, is a sign that the camera completely missed the mark. I would not be surprised to see Canon release an EOS R100 upgrade sooner than later to correct this oversight.

Canon doesn't appreciate finishing second in any category, especially not in Japan. They find it, for lack of a more appropriate term, profoundly disappointing. I would expect changes sooner rather than later.

  1. Seems like Canon should just go after the ZV-E10 market directly if it has been #1 in the rankings for 6 months in a row. Take the R50, drop the EVF, add a mic and square off the body design.

  2. Canon has completed their line-up now.
So perhaps time for smaller cameras like the M200 or M6ii. Call it RM200 and RM6? With apsc RF mount.
Plus a vintage camera like Zfc.

    yes.

R200 and give it some M200 love and shove into it decent streaming video.

  4. To be fair, the ZV-E10 is much more competitively priced in Japan compared to the US, which is likely reflected in Japanese market sales. Meanwhile, Canon is practically giving the R100 away in the US in a way they are not doing in Japan.

Right now, the prices on B&H USA and Map Camera Japan are:

    R100$299 USD (after $180 discount)74,250 JPY (483 USD)
    R50$629 USD99,990 JPY (651 USD)
    ZV-E10$698 USD (after $50 discount)75,000 JPY (488 USD)

  5. I need the Canon is DOOOOOMMMED ™ T-shirt.

ZV-E10 success really proves consumer level camera is for Un-challenging conditions. I sold the ZV-E10 because the LCD screen is barely visible when you shoot outdoors. I replaced it with R50, no complaints.

In one of the earlier ZV-E units Sony polarized the screen wrong, it would turn black in landscape orientation if you were wearing polarized sunglasses. So we went from cameras designed by someone that hasn't seen actual hands to cameras designed by people that never experienced sunlight.

As someone who refuses to wear non-polarized glasses, that oversight made me sad.

  7. Those silly site or youtube can make a fake news again.
Last year Canon was 41% and this year is 25.7% without mention the region. 🤣

Anyways R50 price is more expensive than ZV-E10. (20000-30000yen)
It can't see Canon would make a discount in Japan.

    This news was last week.
You can see the title was not the same as yours.
The reader will have different impact.
If Canon is very poor in Japan, I don't know others in Japan. 🤣

  10. "Japan's been strange lately when it comes to camera gear."

It's not just lately. Back when Olympus was Olympus Japan was the one country where they sold really well.

  11. On one hand, these statistics don’t include the positive effect of the upcoming availability of the R5ii and R1.

On the other hand, those won’t likely move the needle that far — and perhaps less far than they might have since lots of people aren’t convinced that they move Canon ahead of Sony and Nikon.

    we’ll see.
