Jeff Cable has provided a tour of Canon CPS services at the Paris Olympic Games. As always, it's a gear nerd paradise.
Canon has provided 100 copies of both the EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II for shooters at the games to try out and give feedback to Canon before the final versions of the cameras start shipping to customers in August and November.

Outside of cameras, there is also a large selection of glass for CPS shooters to use, everything from RF 10-20mm f/4L IS USM all the way up to the RF 1200mm f/8L IS USM. Canon seems to provide enough copies of each bit of kit so there's no need to worry about availability.
Canon also has a full service repair and testing facility with a lot of techs to get broken cameras or lenses back into action.

Canon EOS R1 Performance
Jeff has used the Canon EOS R1 for shooting gymnastics events and has come away extremely impressed with the autofocus system.
Now, for those of you who are into photography and cameras, let me tell you about the Canon R1. The focus on this camera is absolutely AMAZING! In past Olympics, my take rate when photographing gymnastics was maybe 40% in perfect focus. With the Canon R1 I have a 95% take rate.
https://blog.jeffcable.com/2024/07/capturing-photos-of-men-from-usa.htmlA hit rate of 95% in any situation is really impressive, and we're definitely looking forward to more coverage of both the EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II.

With those as options it would be interesting if we can assign buttons to those functions to quickly turn them on and off while shooting.
The 40fps still seems low to me (from a technical standpoint), I really wonder if that is an actual technical limitation or if someone just said "
640kb40fps is enough for everyone!"The new R5 can do 30fps X 45Mp = 1350MP a second
Yet the "Flagship" R1 can do 40fps X 24MP = 960MP a second
That's a 41% increase in throughput for the R5 II.
Equalising for the R1 - that would be a 56fps equivelent.
I know the buffers might be slightly different, but still....
Could Canon possiby increase the R1's fps to 60fps in firmware - seems like the hardware can take it.
Afterall, there's another 24MP camera out there that does 120fps.
RAW + JPG is unlimited at 40 FPS.
They could raise it for JPG only shooters if they wanted to.
I use the high frame burst mode on my R3 so I would use it on the R1 but I do not miss that there is not one.
His gymnastics photos this year are amazing.
I do not think he used it for gymnastics.
It was also less than 4 years ago.
The games were delayed.
Canon will not push performance to the max.
40fps with semi-unlimited buffer isn't low. A9iii with semi-unlimited buffer is 30fps. Canon leaves a huge room to improve R1/R5ii by firmware. But Canon's track record isn't the best....
How I would love to stroll through there like a candy store, take everything I want and dady (or someone else) may pay for it.
That only happens every 4 years.
He used a 1DX III last Olympics.
The R3 was a prototype and was not at the stage the R1 is now.
He did use the R3 for some photos though.
