Camera Raw 5.6 also provides a a fix for an issue affecting PowerPC customers using the final Camera Raw 5.5 and DNG Converter 5.5 updates on the Mac. The issue, introduced in the demosaic change to address sensors with unequal green response, has the potential to create artifacts in highlight areas when processing raw files from Sony, Olympus, Panasonic and various medium format digital camera backs.

Great to see Adobe keeping pace with these updates. I wonder however how many more Camera Raw updates will apply to the Lightroom 2 development life now that LR3 is in the pipeline?
Just in time. My 7D is in the mail.
Adobe will keep updating LR2 with new cameras until LR3 is shipping. There is always a next version in the pipeline – LR3 just happens to be available to download as beta.
Interesting per CNET this includes distortion correction for the S90. I guess ACR has some capabilities that they haven’t made available on the UI yet!

Apple sucks big time on this one. I want my 7D raw to be compatible with Aperture as well (to simplify the process flow as it’s meant to be).
I read somewhere that manufactures are spending less on lenses and relying on software to fix distortions. The jpgs in the S90 are auto corrected so ACR was forced to support the same feature or the images would look worse then Canons RAW software. I’m guessing it’s a fixed correction applied all photos from that specific camera.
The indicated page says “release candidate”. As in “not final”
You’ll rarely see software companies put out “final” versions of their software with that title. “Final” implies “will not be worked on further…”, and software is always open to changes.
“Release Candidates”, however, are used to tag software that has reached a degree of stability and workability that the developer feels is “good enough” to be handed over to customers as a working copy. As opposed to open betas, which are copies of software still in work.

So don’t attack me, oh yee great camera experts, but I have a simple question.
I just downloaded 5.6 and under camera profiles is Adobe Standard and then what looks to be the “picture styles” that you can set in camera(7D) if you were using jpegs.
Is “Adobe Standard” just the “pure” off camera RAW file?
I hope this question makes sense.

I have the s90, the correction factor is dependent on the zoom setting and really only applies on the wide end. So ACR must have some capabilities to do variable correction. Wonder when we will see this in the UI?
No, “Adobe Standard” is adobe’s best interpretation of what it “should” look like based on their sample cameras. There is no way to display the pure RAW file; it wouldn’t make sense to human eyes because of the Bayer pattern of the sensor. So anything you see is an interpretation of some sort.
Why don’t you say anything about dcraw? It already supports the 7D and others of the list.
In my opinion it is not the task of the programmers to find out how Canon’s RAW format works. Canon should publish the format and keep it unchanged for a while. Or better save Adobe Digital Negative (DNG) directly on the card, as other cameras do.

These are beta releases, the real release will come later. There may be problems when you use these, so be prepared.

Both the ACR and LR updates are release candidates. I’ll wait until they are finalized.
Its easy to say they should give their trade secrets away, when you do not have millions invested.
Nikon charges for their NX2 software. Canon doesn’t charge for DPP — YET. They may very well start charging any time.
I am the customer and I want an output of the cam that is useful. I pay for it. With no support of dcraw I would not have bought the Rebel/EOS 450D.
DPP is no answer, because as far as I know it does not export in a common lossless format like DNG. And it does not run on linux and every future computer where I will want to see my pictures.
Why should Canon have invested millions in an unfree and undocumented format? Pentax saves in DNG!
