Fall 2009
Just received some information about the replacement of the 50D.
The camera is to be launched in the fall of 2009 and on sale for Christmas.
You can expect it to be branded “7D” the source says. The “xxD” moniker is going away. There is a perceived confusion with customers between Canon and Nikon model numbers. I actually hear people saying model numbers wrong all the time.
Specs:
- 15.1mp (apparently it will be the same sensor with some internal upgrades)
- DIGIC V (DIGIC IV a stopover to a big advancement in processing)
- New 13 Point AF
- 1080p Movie Mode
- 8fps
- 3″ VGA LCD
- 98% VF
- New Battery
- Weathersealing
- Ergonomic Upgrades
- 1x Compact Flash and 1x Secure Digital Slots
Some might say “why would Canon put DIGIC V in the 7D and not 5D2?”. Remember Canon has outspecced xxD cameras with Rebels in the past. People also scoffed at the 21mp notion of the 5D2 with the 1Ds3 around. You're only as good as your latest camera I guess.
This is a new source, so CR2 folks.

Wow,, I’m thinking of Christmas already,,,,
Wow… A 98% VF in the former xxD line would be nice!
But we’re talking a 1.6 crop here, do we?
I think so since it is going to be the replacement of 50D
I wonder if Canon EF-S lenses support 1.5x/1.4x crop? It could help improving ISO…
1080p Movie Mode! Yes! That’s what I’ve been waiting for! (5D being too expensive and having a few EF-S lenses…that was never an option.)
Sounds great… just too great, maybe. A bit like someone writing down the EOS of his dreams.
But perhaps this finally is the long awaited competition for the Nikon D300, Canon has to do something in this market segment.
But how would such a camera be priced? Its not FF, so people will expect it to be cheaper than the 5DII, at the same time it has a better AF and higher FPS. I guess it will end up being significantly more expensive than the 50D at time of introduction. Maybe 1500€. Considering that the 5DII will probably be below 2000€ by then, this will make for a tough choice for people like me that will be looking for an upgrade for their xxxD.
I think this camera cannot be substantially more expensive than the current 50D. Think Nikon D300. Even with the proposed specs, this new camera is not that much better than the competition. 13 AF pts vs 51 AF pts, anyone?
Most importantly for me is the sensor. It better match the D90 dynamic range at low ISO and offer equally low noise at high ISO. And no, I am not interested in what their latest jpeg engine can do. I am more keen on what their RAW files produce. Also, please do not tell me about sRAW. There better be no more banding issues.
Of secondary importance is the ability to bracket more than 3 shots. Nikon has been offering 9 shots bracketing for a while and I hope Canon can offer at least 6 bracketing frames. This is a software thing and cost Canon NOTHING. Why they presume that every xxD owner has no need for this important feature is totally beyond me.
8fps! I’m sold.
But wait – “new battery”. “chipped battery” that means I guess.
Go away with chipped batteries. Canon’s pricing on batteries is ridiculous. I don’t want to pay 90 EUR for batteries that sell for 3 EUR on Ebay… (and I won’t care about quality with THIS difference)
Bah, not interested. Still not 45 AF points.
Looks like I will seriously consider switching to Nikon if that is all there is. A D300 would be my dream camera, with a usable AF, and weather sealing, among other goodies. Guess there will be a D400 before the 60(7)D …..
Will wait until the rumors materialize, but in the mean time no more investments in Canon. No, I don’t want 21 MP and FF, and the 1 series is over my financial limits.
wow…. let the crying and moaning begin… with all the flack that the 50D has gotten, I took the plunge and bought it…. I don’t know what peoples problem is… its an awesome camera! Is it the 5d MKII or a 1d series… NO… but its no rebel either… I see myself using this camera for years… i do wish they included the video on here… would have been nice to play around with in some situations but Im not going to be upgrading just for that…besides, a 1 year upgrade cycle on 1k+ cameras? thanks bordering on insulting… make a good camera… spend some significant time on r&d and then release a meaningful upgrade… just my 0.02
hum, should I read the same battery as the 5DMKII… new battery is really vague. It kills me to carry 2 different battery with me (30D and 5DMKII for me now).
13 points of AF?
This will be a final blow for me to switch to Nikon.
Why these product planners are always afraid that a APS-C camera with beter features that will kill 5D or 1D series?
No. It won’t happen!
Once you always save the best features on 1x series, then people will go and find a better replacement.
We would expect a D400 may release soon and we all wait and see.
Please please do switch to Nikon….
Imagine the model confusion if Canon keeps iterating model names–the second coming of the 10D after 3 years, everybody!
more cameras should have dual-MC slots…
Have been shooting with the 30D, 40D and was waiting for a Canon FF that was reasonably price but the 5D MK II has only 3.9 fps and a big 21mp. I am a sports shooter and don’t need the 21mp but 12-16 and a high fps. I did not get the 1D MK III because it wasn’t that much improvement over the 40D. The 1.6 crop factor helps with telephoto shots. Keeps me from spending too much on 300mm+ lenses. But with the low price of the Nikon D700 and it performance over the 5D MK II and 40D I am thinking of switching. Of course I will lose my crop factor but gain allot in performance. Hopefully Canon will have a 2D/3D replacement for the 1D MK III and its high fps, low noise high iso, af system and overall iq will be a hugh improvement from last. Nikon might be on my list for this christmas…..
NOT going to happen, sorry!
Wow. I can’t believe how fast they are changing models now. In the past it was years and now it is 1-1.5 years? Now lets hope they drive those prices down so we can afford to get new ones a lot sooner!!!
If all the 13 AF points are cross type, then it’s still comparable to D300 (15 cross type pts).
wtf… what’s this russian stuff? says “rumor, canon readying replacement 50D” in title and the bottom “via canonrumors views (1) [50D, 60D, 7D, rumor] […]” good thing I can read russian… still confused as to what its doing here
Getting screwed on batteries and accessories again; incompatible with the BP-511 series batteries, and no doubt other accessories too.
I’m curious: does Nikon do a better job of keeping battery and accessory compatibility?
LP-E6 battery? Yes then I can share with the 5DII. Still no proper AF Canon come on a 1.6 Crop is nice for birding, wildlife and sport. A proper tracking system is essential for this. Gif use a 45 AF which makes this possible. Ore we all have to switch to a Nikon D300 and a 200-400 VR lens. How many more people have to switch brand for they will understand??? A 100/200-500L IS USM F5.6 would be nice as replacement for the old 100-400 to compete with the Sigma’s a specially the very nice 50-500EX HSM and 150-500EX OS HSM.
5DmII says:
“How many more people have to switch brand for the will understand???”
They will understand when you start making sense. I wish you would switch to a D300. This is a CR2 rumor.
Secondly, you are bitching about lenses in a camera body post.
AF points are about like megapixels. It’s not how many you have, but how good the ones are that you have. I have seen the 51 points of the d700 and can’t for the life of me justify why you would need one point .2mm away from another. If your focus is that critical, you should be doing manual. If you are doing sport, and need it fast you are going to be able to repick if it used the wrong point. Yes the 9 point AF is getting a little weak, but so is Nikon’s 12.1 MP sensor. If you like Nikon, go shoot Nikon.
15mp (no more), Good high iso, fast fps, and a few tweaks ought to make for a great selling camera if MSRP < $1500
Hopefully the new battery will be the same as the one for the 5DMkII, a little pricey, but very good. Building my cache of those. I have lots of BP-511’s :( But still have a 40D.
In-camera image stabilisation? Revolutionary new sensor with clean ISO 25600? Really good viewfinder? Really good weather sealing? No? Naaahhh.
I just hope that video mode will have custom framerates, if it is only 30fps I do not want it. At least 25 and 24 fps should be incuded.
I have the 50D right now and I think it’s a great camera…especially if you can afford to attach an L series lens to it instead of the EF-S ones. However I must admit the 5D II got me interested due to the 1080P video mode. I saw an example of a night city shot in full movie mode and it was crisp. It would be nice to have that feature on a mid range semi-pro body like the “60D”. However I think that may take away the sales of the 5D MarkII as that was the key differentiator. I would be surprise if the next generation of the 50D will have video mode due to that reason alone…but we can only dream…till than, it’s the 50D for me…I rather spend the money on a better lens then overspend on the body and not have the money for a good L series lens.
They could add a 720p mode tho.
When this comes true, than this is my new Body!!! ;)
Canon rep at the TRAVEL AND ADVENTURE SHOW told me that there won’t be a replacement for the 50D. Maybe she was just trying to get me to buy the 50D.
Will the 7d have multi-spot metering? I still have my Canon T90. When I went digital I got the Rebel Xti, as a starter. But I really want to have Multi-spot metering back!
So if the rebel series has been pushed out to more than a twelve month cycle, will the xxD now be pushed to 15 or 18 months which means we wont see the 60D until April/May 2010?
Well said, finally a good report on this stuff
Would love to see the popup flash be a commander for off camera units.
real 15 MP + digic V less noise + 8fps + improved AF + 1080 movie = killer camera
ouch
a friend changed to Nikon and all their old accessories are nearly twice the price of Canon equal.
Nikon SB-9 is HKD 1950 vs Canon CP-E4 is HKD 1100
Nikon SU-800 is extremely hard to get hold of vs Canon ST-E2 is hard to get but got stocks from time to time.
So please don’t moan about Canon switching battery types (why don’t you see the Sony batteries ranges – MAD lot but old tech batteries – I think the OLD “M” series still for their Alpha DSLRs too).
It’s inevitable that Canon will change all BP-511a to LP-E6 their NEW 60D / xxD series or whatever the name “7D” ?
BP-511a has been with us for far too long.
The 1D / 1Ds or merger 1 digital series will be replacing before 50D.
Pity about the movie mode if i wanted movie I would buy Movie cam
exactly! its not quantity but quality, there is no point having a ridiculous amount of autofocus points if they don’t improve accuracy or time… your the first person to actually bring this up.
then just don’t use it – simple enough
I just wish that Canon would hurry up and do something!! They are falling so far behind Nikon right now and there is already rumors about a D400 in the works to be released in a week! I would hate to have to sell all of my bodies and glass to switch over but if they don’t do something soon, it will happen.
but you will be paying for it
they would charge the same without it, and just have put the R&D budget into something else, probably like a starbucks finder or something even stupider than that. Its just like saying I don’t need a self cleaning sensor since I can do it myself, which ignores that all cameras with self cleaning sensors have been introduced at the same or lower price than their previous model which lacked a self cleaning sensor. Keep in mind that Canon is not tailoring its cameras to just what you need, they have to cast a wide net to make up for R&D and assembly line design costs, which are pretty much the same no matter what features you add or features you leave off.
they won’t merge and the 50D replacement will be out in August, probably at the same time as the 1D mkIV
been shooting canon 20D, 30D, 40D, 50D series for years. the 20D was the sharpest of all, if you use all the controls on the 50D it’s a nice sensor, but in low light over 800 iso very grainy. the issue with canon is that horrific flash system. several pros switched to nikon because of the flash. the 590EXII is the worst product canon ever made. ttl never works right, the flash heats up, shuts off, horrible exposures, blanks, missing shots, doesn’t shoot in the dark and the list goes on. the strobes blow out within months. the second worst product is the new cord for the flash which breaks equally as often.
i became so desperate i purchased the Nikon D300 system-some observations, the flash fires ALL THE TIME and is consistent, but the detail in the images of the canon are more prominent. the auto white balance on the nikon is very disappointing– very yellow and orange. i think the new 900 flash might be different, never got to use the 800.
the auto focus on canon for images that are moving is terrible, nikon better, but i find the infamous 18-200 lens average.
if you could combine the nikon flash system with a canon sensor you would have it made!
let’s see what happens with the new models..D400 and Canon 60D…
SOMEONE PLEASE TELL CANON TO MAKE A FLASH THAT WORKS!!
never had a problem with my 580EX2, though I do shoot with it manual most of the time…
when do al not pro cameras get an full frame ?? does anyone know? or do you need to buy an 5dmkII
if you ask me, 45 is waaay to many. it’s pretty much filling the VF with AF points, if you can’t see what youre taking, you loose shots. That’s why I prefer canon.
On the high AF point systems, both the canon 45 and the nikon 51 the individual points aren’t etched on the focus screen, only the ellipse and the center meter circle, the points just light up with the LED when selected
Well. I still own a 40D but I´m thinking about a replacement. And for me the basic priority is the tough weather and dust sealing. That´s the main feature I ask from a good camera body. It´s a pitty that you have sealed L lences and the body is not. Secondary the video mode is a fine improovement, but not necessary, it is a photographic came first and laso the lences are not realy made for taking videosequences. one more thing that can be improoved is still the dust cleaning system, that is stil very ineffective.
One more thing, when I see debates about the pros and cons of Canon and Nikon etc. I see that all the photographers do not know what they are talkin about. First try to make a nice picture with a good lens and¨a good optical filter and than play with this technical nosences like white ballance. If the picture is not primarily well exposed the white ballance and other electronic improovements cant do anything with it. I prefer shooting with minor improovements… (You may take me for a fool but have you had white ballance on your film cameras????)
I bought my 30D over a year ago and its been a great body. I am young, but I know what I’m doing. I shoot Canon and don’t plan on doing something so stupid as to make a complete switch to Nikon.
However, if the 7D is not to my standards (fast action) I will simply keep my 30D and use it for another year or so.
What I would like to see in the 7D:
15MP
CLEAN ISO 50-25600
8FPS without grip (possibly 10 with grip)
HD 1080 video
On the whole 1080 video stuff, I’m not too picky. I personally think we should all just be thankful that at least having some built in video, we can leave our camcorders at home.
SD slot?
does it support SDXC???
My 40D works just great. Unlike those who want a Nikon, I shoot BIF etc just fine with my useless 9 point AF system. Perhaps it comes down to what lens you are trying to do things with and basic technique?
The 50D did not offer me anything worthy over my existing investment in the 40D, although it was an improvement – no doubt.
I would like to see on the 60D:
At least 15 MP and 1.6 crop
6.5 fps or better
A new sensor with iso 6400 that beats iso 1600 on the 40D
Picture iq at iso 100 that beats the 40D at iso 100
An AF system that matches the 1D3 in performance. Dont care if it only has 13 points – it must just track a bit quicker than the present 40D/50D. The 1D4 will surely have insane AF performance I am sure so why not give the 60D a boost to where the 1D3 was?
Built in GPS tagging
More custom menus
Improved E-ttl – I end up doing flash work all manual most of the time when doing portraits etc.
I agree that there is room for a xxD with a 16MP full frame also that is cheaper than the 5D2. Call that one the 7D.
Video? It’s nice – but I could not care less.
for mw Canon EOS 50D is the best
Canon really needs to step up to the plate on the autofocus and image quality. The D300 (while more $$) set new standards that the 50D still can’t follow. Catching one BIF or any single subject is one thing, but smart autofocus catches objects when many things are going on and gets the “guesswork” right. Nikon does that better, and despite the $$ that I have in Canon glass – it’s still something I’m only willing to give Canon one more decent try at before I switch.
why wouldnt they make it full frame sensor? if its in between the 50d and the markII, and priced so, they could probably make it full-frame. having to spend at least 2700 for a full frame sensor is really frustrating. there is also talk of an improved IS system here for a camera later this year… http://www.canonrumors.com/2009/07/canon-develops-hybrid-image-stabilization-system/ i just really wish that it had a full frame sensor, but it looks like it wont. bummer. LAME LAME LAME.
seriously! i wish they had a full frame pro camera on the low-end models!
Canon 60D is going to have a Tiltable LCD Screen.
To remind you, we HAD ‘White Balance’ in film. It’s fixed as the ASA/DIN. Remember daylight film? tungsten film?
on nikonrumors.com, people guess there will be 2 new bodies soon :
– D700s (D700+video0
– D700x (D700+24Mpx)
KJ says “15mp (no more), Good high iso, fast fps, and a few tweaks ought to make for a great selling camera if MSRP < $1500"
You should hurry, the 50D is out since a year.
out in August? Canon should hurry then.
I see the new Canon 7d at B&H Photo web site at http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/646908-REG/Canon_3814B004_EOS_7D_SLR_Digital.html i think it will be a great camera
Call me confused, but with the recent release of the 7D, I am not sure whether it truly is a 50D replacement or filling in an entirely new segment. The price points are different for the two; 50D was around $1,200 for the body and 7D is $1,800. Does make sense from a competitive standpoint as it will properly compete with the D300, but it begs the question: Is a 50D replacement still to come?
(Canon 5D Mark II + Canon 50d)/2 = Canon 7D
I was reading something else about this on another blog. Interesting. Your perspective on it is diametrically contradicted to what I read in the first place. I am still pondering over the different points of view, but I’m inclined heavily toward yours. And irrespective, that’s what is so super about advanced democracy and the marketplace of ideas online.
