Canon is going to be releasing new firmware for most of the current EOS R lineup. The big updates will come to the EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II.

Canon EOS R1 & EOS R5 Mark II

C2PA

Both cameras will be getting C2PA Content Authenticity, which Canon has been talking about for quite some time now.

Panning Assist

The EOS R1 will also be getting an updated version of the Panning assist that was present in the EOS R3. This will allow smoother tracking for fast-moving subjects.

New Servo AF Update

Both cameras will also be getting a new Servo AF mode that is going to benefit sports photographers. Canon says this new feature is:

for capturing subjects behind nets in sports like badminton or volleyball, for precise focus in challenging scenarios.

Pre-Capture Improvements

There will be a new option to set how many images are captured while using pre-capture.

We don't know for sure, but a lot of us would love to see new pre-capture binding options.

8TB CFexpress Type B Support

Both the EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II will get 8TB support, along with the EOS R3 and EOS R5.

Bug Fixes

There will most likely be a lot of bug fixes for the EOS R5 Mark II and likely the EOS R1 as well.

Availability

The firmware should be available globally on July 17, 2025.
