Canon today has announced the Canon RF 7-14mm f/2.8-3.5 fisheye zoom lens. It’s been a long time since Canon shocked the industry with the Canon EF 8-15mm f/4L USM – approximately 15 years ago, and this time, Canon said, we can do better. And they did, they made it wider and faster – and the result is an impressive 7-14mm focal range that starts at f/2.8.

This fisheye lens is rather unique as it offers two different flavors of image projection onto the sensor. At the lens’s widest focal length, the lens produces a circular image with a 180-degree angle of view, and at 14mm, the image will cover the entire full-frame image sensor with a field of view of 114 degrees diagonally.

Lens Construction and MTF

Canon Japan has released the MTF diagram for the Canon RF 7-14mm Fisheye, and it does not disappoint. In terms of contrast across the field of view, the lens will achieve a much greater level of contrast, and as well, the resolution of the lens across the frame is also greatly improved. The resolution tails off after 20mm on the widest part of the frame, because it’s, well, a fisheye, and there’s bound to be some resolution loss at the corners. This is certainly a remarkable improvement over it’s predecessor.
