Canon has announced a limited edition PowerShot G7 X Mark III to mark the 30th anniversary of the PowerShot name. It all started with the PowerShot 600 and has led us to this moment!

This is going to be one of those products that most people won't understand why it exists. Repackaging an existing product, giving it some new paint, a “twill front dial” and a 30th anniversary badge for $400 more than the regular G7X3.

I don't understand why it exists, but here we are. I imagine quantities are going to be extremely limited because you can't preorder it from anywhere. It'll probably be a case of retailers getting whatever Canon sends them. Perhaps Canon is only doing one production run of this camera.

Leica has done this sort of thing forever, but the value of a lot of those limited-edition cameras tend to go up in value, some a lot more than others.

Canon will sell every single one of these Limited Edition cameras that they make. Some will be collectors; some will be the social media people and maybe a few that like the camera and have the means. People do like limited edition things.

The camera itself looks nice enough, but not $400 nice for me.

For good measure, Canon is also throwing in a Peak Desgn Cuff Wrist Strap and a 32GB SD card. That 32GB card might fetch a pretty penny in the near future.

Limited Edition PowerShot G7 X Mark III Overview

Celebrate 30 years of the Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III with this 30th Anniversary Limited Edition Kit . It includes the iconic camera in an exclusive graphite finish with a diamond-knurled control ring plus a custom wrist strap, and an SD card. Its 20.1MP 1″ CMOS sensor uses a stacked design, which pairs with the DIGIC 8 image processor to enable especially fast focusing performance, full-resolution shooting at up to 20 fps, and UHD 4K30p video recording.

Optically, the G7 X Mark III houses a 4.2x zoom lens, which covers a 24-100mm equivalent focal length range for wide-angle to short-telephoto fields of view. An f/1.8-2.8 maximum aperture range suits working in difficult lighting conditions as does an Optical Image Stabilizer, which compensates for the effects of camera shake. The camera has a slim design with a 3.0″ 180° tilting touchscreen LCD plus Bluetooth and Wi-Fi for wirelessly connecting to a mobile device.

  1. Wow. A gray color, 30th anniversary logo and cross-hatch knurling on the control ring for $450 USD more. This is Canon’s ‘red dot’ camera.

Attachment is mine when new in 2021.

Price in Euro is only 899! (From AC Foto in Germany)

  3. Ok, I'd buy it at 899. I emailed them. That's only 50 more.
It is rather unusual for European dealers in most countries to charge more than the manufacturer's recommended sales price.

  4. I am perfectly willing to pay $880 USD (B&H as of this morning) for a ‘regular’ G7X Mk III to replace mine when it eventually malfunctions. This is 35% more than my original purchase in 2021. The Anniversary Limited Edition contributes zero to the functionality of the camera and end results, unless an ego boost helps out in the process.

My experience with all the PowerShots I have owned is that something ‘mechanical’ happens after 30-40k shutter actuations. The shutter or IS gets ‘sticky,’ or the complex non-linear guides on the collapsing zoom/focus lens barrels get worn down and loose.

My count is ~30,750. How do I know? I have my file numbering set to ‘continuous’ and I don’t create new folders on the SD memory card. The file number rolls over from IMG_9999 to IMG_0001 and its done this three times already.

  5. I wonder how long it will be before Canon releases a photocentric PowerShot with their new 1.4" sensor. It's a safe bet that Canon didn't create a new sensor and a new sensor size for just one camera model.

Is it like clicking your heels together three times? Or saying Beetlejuice? If you repeat it often enough, it must happen! 👍

  7. As a "limited edition" it couldn't be more "limited", unless Canon just repackaged the same camera in a different box.
what were you expecting? anything more than that and maybe an accessory would have been a new camera model. maybe a cool faux leather case with a shoulder strap would have gone over big...

  8. I wonder if you could get $2000 for one on Amazon or ebay. I know the "regular" one was fetching $1500.
Oh, hell yeah. The eBay scalpers gonna have a field day with these cameras fetching $2000+.

Geez, what a low-effort marketing stunt. It really disappoints me. If it were $100 more, I would've honestly thought about this, but a 45% price increase? For a color, a logo, and a package redesign? Please.

I just hope that we'll still get the AE-1 remake at some point.

  9. What I'm not fully understanding is how they're getting away charging the MSRP from 7 years ago... I'm not even talking about the very expensive limited edition.

I get that some people might want such a camera or even see a need for it, and since they're out of options, they will go for it.

But this is a clear case for me where I will just have to vote with my wallet. If they want my money, they need to update the camera.

Also if we're being honest the change from Mark II to Mark III wasn't big either.

From that point of view, if the price hasnt changed in 7yrs, then the real value of the purchase has decreased.

  11. What's the cage on the R1 in the article image?

Tilta, It does not have a vertical Arca mount like the SmallRig. It has a nicer fit and finish though. The R1 will never be on a tripod, so that wasn't a consideration for me

I wonder that to cant wait for new compact camera's with i hope great zoom of around 300/400.

And with raw they need to make a 740hs with a bigger sensor and with raw, i would definitely buy it
