A couple of weeks ago we reported that Canon would be announcing a new Cinema EOS camera to compete with Sony's FX line of cameras. Our report mentioned Canon going after the Sony FX30 camera, which is a capable APS-C camera for video production.

We alluded to full-frame Cinema EOS camera would be coming too, but we didn't think it would come this month, but here we are. It's going to be a big announcement heading into Q4, and there are a lot of things coming from Canon in the coming months.

Canon's has a big event for the launch coming on September 9 ahead of the IBC trade show.

Canon had a big dealer event last week in Burbank and flew in a ton of people to come and see the camera.

Canon Cinema EOS C50

It's now confirmed that Canon will be releasing the Cinema EOS C50, which will be the successor to the EOS R5 C. It will once again be based off of its R5 series brother.

You can pretty much take the specifications of the EOS R5 Mark II and know what it's going to be capable of hardware wise. There will also be a ton of features geared towards filmakers, since it is a Cinema EOS camera.

This is going right up against Sony's FX3.

APS-C Cinema EOS Camera

We do know that Canon will be launching an APS-C based Cinema EOS camera, but we haven't confirmed whether or not that would be coming next week.

Stay Tuned

We're waiting on permission to post detailed specifications for the Cinema EOS C50, so hopefully tomorrow we can do so.

  1. Interesting development. I wonder if it would have built-in ND filters. My R1 and R5 Mk2 are good enough for video for me. Still holding out for lens announcements.

  2. Thanks that it’s not an APSC Camera. Would have been heartbreaking. Simply because Canon started this sh@t called full frame in Cinema in cinema parlance with 5D Mark 2.
And finally the naming nomenclature is right.
I would be grabbing this camera instead of C80 as I had been using R5C ever since it came out. It still is a fantastic camera, but this time it will go as my B-cam with this one.

Another thing. I still use two Analog film SLRs, and EOS 300 which I use the
most was released in 1997. So, hybrids will
stay. If not for cinematography, but for still
    Images.
My son can use them, because this is Canon.

  3. Looks like it might not have an EVF, which would be really disappointing for this form-factor. If that is the case, then I will be curious to see what advantages it could have over the regular R5 II (or indeed the R5 C): the body looks too small to have internal NDs (although I would be happy to be proven wrong), so perhaps just the OS from the cine line and a built-in fan to differentiate it from the R5 II ... like an R5 C, but a downgrade due to the lack of an EVF?

Interesting thoughts. I've been using the R5C for three years now. I really love this camera but it's definitely not without its faults. Very curious if this new camera will solve those. First ones on my list, in no particular order:
    • Usable battery life without v-mounts
    • Top handle with XLR and rec button like FX3
    • Full size HDMI
    • Better power connector than a single USB-C
    • Internal ND? (I'm not counting on this)
    • Rotatable handle like the C100-C300 (not gonna happen, seeming the pictures)
    • Reasonably sized screen.
    • Riggable without a cage (I'm seeing thread holes)

Advantages? Hopefully IBIS which the R5C lacks, and a fan which the R5ii doesn't have and causes overheating. Also C-log2 and hopefully no line skipped 4K60p.

As for EVF,maybe there will be an optional EVF accessory alongside XLR top handle.

But even without all that, an R5ii with a fan in a compact FX3 style body with cine OS would already be a major win.

They fit internal ND's into the Powershot V1... maybe it's wishful thinking but I'm truly hoping for internal ND's here

    That's a good list!
    • Yes, full-size HDMI is a must.
    • Top handle with XLR & record button: agreed.
      • The Tascam XLR hotshoe XLR unit is just so ungainly.
      • Bonus: throw in a zoom rocker - salvage the terrible hand-held ergonomics of the PZ-E2!
(Hard to tell form the teaser image, but looks like they have a zoom rocker around the shutter button like on the R50 V ... if so, that would be most welcome!)
    • USB-C may not be the best physical connector for rugged situations, but it is otherwise pretty capable and has the benefit of wide adoption. I just don't see any new type of barrel connector likely at this time. Maybe some locking USB-C solution. If the USB-C port was being used for data (e.g. to stream via a tethered smartphone) then I would hope there would be a way to loop in power through some sort of Y-cable / intermediate device (very small powered USB-C hub).
    • Re battery life: agreed v-mounts on a camera like this are undesirable. I have been pleasantly surprised by the LP-E6P on the R5 C after the associated firmware release ... haven't tried with the battery grip, but 2 of those in tandem could be a pretty decent solution. If the camera is based on the R5 II internals but also includes a fan, the only option to improve at this point might be a physically-larger battery; but the form factor appears to be on the smaller side.
    • Riggable without a cage: agree this aspect looks promising from the teaser image. (My view is that: a camera like this should be usable without any rigging but make the right provisions so that it can be done without dramatically altering the size & balance of the camera.)
    • Reasonably sized screen: on this point, I am curious: for this form-factor, what would you ideal screen size be? (I have been pretty happy with the R5 C screen: although it is smaller than the C400's screen, it is higher-resolution ... which I very much appreciate about the R5 C but am disappointed in the C400 for.)

V1 has small sensor and integrated lens making it easier to integrate NDs. Not impossible on a C50 but unlikely, especially if they put IBIS in there.

  9. Andrea Pizzini already spilled a few beans on his Youtube channel already. Basic specs of the R5II but built for Cinema with added Cinema specs to compete directly with the FX3.

  10. I'm liking the teaser so far... tally light and multiple mounting points. Could be a FX3 competitor indeed. But that camera is also 4 years old so I'm a bit more concerned with how well it compares to the imminent FX3 Mark II.

It would be nice if it had a workable WiFi connection that offered remote control of the camera and that didn't require a $1,000.00 accessory.

It's the FX3 competitor, not the A1II one.

  13. But the FX3 is only a 4k camera?! (10MP vs 45MP)
    complete different camera section?!
Isn't there a Sony Cine body with the A1(II) sensor?

ND would be a must have for me :S but I m not in the section for those cameras 😀 -

My wish would be also a very small "cine" camera for maybe VLOGs & drone flights! (aps-c with fast readout and nice night capability)
