  • Was getting nervous that I’d have to use the jpeg’s from a shoot I did last night. Thanks for being prompt, Canon!

  • EOS Utility: read those release notes extra closely. It says it no longer supports older camera models. I’m no expert and don’t know exactly what it means, but 20D, 30D, 5D, Rebel XT and a few others are on the list.

  • Seems it’s 3.8.1 for Mac OS and 3.80 for Windows. I downloaded ZB 2.8.1 and it still at least displays RAW files from my 5D so that’s all I really care about. It is sad that my 5D is considered by Canon to be obsolete and not worth supporting any longer. This baby has many more years of usage in her.

  • Changes for Digital Photo Professional 3.8.0;

    1. Supports Windows 7

    2. Supports additional models

The EOS Kiss X4 / EOS REBEL T2i / EOS 550D is now supported.

    3. Adds a lens that supports the aberration correction function.

EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM is newly supported.

    4. Adds a function for adjusting the angle of an image to the Trimming tool.

    Changes for Digital Photo Professional 3.7.0;

    1. Adds supported models

The EOS 7D, PowerShot G11, and PowerShot S90 are now supported.

    2. Adds an NR Preview screen (NR: Noise Reduction)

You can now adjust the NR level while checking the image status on the Preview screen.

    3. Maintains the [Collection] window

Before, when quitting Digital Photo Professional, all images in the [Collection] window were removed from the [Collection] window; however, this has been improved so that the images in the [Collection] window can now be maintained.

    4. Adds the lenses that support the aberration correction function.

Newly supports the EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM, EF-S15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM, and EF-S18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS.

  • i want a native linux version! if they support macosX, it should be easy for them as 1, 2, 3 to support something else.

  • I think this is *hit of Canon. I personally wouldn’t expect somone to pay me £1000’s for simething and not support them a few years later.

  • Great timing Canon! The new version of DPP works great! Although, I found the previous edditions worked pretty well too. However, what really made my day, is that the release also included updaters for the other software programs too. Having just recently received my 1DMkIV, I was glad to see that the latest version of the “Utilities,” now supports the MKIV. Previous edditions (including the one that came with the bundled software) would “Not Recognize” the camera.

One other thing here, having used Canon SLR/DSLRs for over 40 years now, I’m still amazed that some folks don’t take the time to FULLY understand/learn their camera’s before tossing around comments either pro or con!

Today, more than at any time in the past, these pro-level cameras are extremely complex (think modern fighter jet).

Even photogs with a wealth of experience need to know these new high-powered machines, inside and out if they ever expect to realize the “full” potential of their gear. Case in point, without Canon’s recently published “AI Servo AF, Custom Function and ISO Guide,” it would have taken me (and several of my fellow MkIV users) much longer and many frames shot to dicover, (if ever) how to get the very most out of this great little photo making monster! P.S. Great site CR guy!

  • I could only find 3.8.0 on Canon US if I select 7D and Windows 7 (32 or 64 Bit, no matter).
Canon Europe is still at 3.7.2. …

Could someone please post a link to 3.8.1?

  • Still no 64-bit RAW codec (still version that only works under 32-bit).
    I get’s about time for a 64-bit version.
The excuse of only few people use Windows 64-bit is something from the past.

  • In that case it might have a dedicated 64Bit version – or dedicated 64Bit code – would be a good move.

I couldn’t comment… I use camera RAW but still updated, just in case, but I’m on 32Bit too.

  • “Adds a function for adjusting the angle of an image to the Trimming tool.”
At last. Thank you Canon. :)

  • Comparing open source software to ebola or herpes is unfortunate.

Have you even tried any of the open source OS’s? I find at least Ubuntu to get up and running on a computer very quickly. It even looks and acts like Windows or OS X, so theres not even much of a difference there.

The funny thing that a lot of people fail to realize, 90 percent of what they need in an operating system is not only available, but its totally free and fully functional.

And for the other 10 percent of things that may pop up as being necessary, there are utilities like virtualbox and wine for windows compatibility within linux.

Speaking of Wine, has anyone tried running the current DPP through wine in Ubuntu?

  • Where would internet be without Linux? Servers, servers, servers… :)

The only thing that keeps me from switching to Linux is that there is no native Photoshop and/or Lightroom. And don’t even dare to speak of Wine…

  • What’s up with dpreview? First, the other day, they describe a firmware update to the TLi, now they announce the new versions of DPP, etc. as supporting the “recently released T1i/550D”. Someone over there’s not paying attention.

  • For most people there is no reason to switch (yet).
One reason to NOT switch is missing drivers and codecs…

  • Canon also states that all of their software now supports Windows 7. Not sure what they changed, as I have been using them with Win7 for quite some time.

Also, as another commenter mentioned, EOS Utility no longer supports older cameras – including the 1D/s cameras prior to the Mark IIIs, and the 5D classic.

  • DPP has always supported 45/90 degree image rotation. This version lets you rotate by small and arbitrary amounts, like 2.3% clockwise.

  • I can’t say for certain about the 5D classic but a buddy of mine has a 1DS2 and works great with the new release. Possibly installed wrong or something?
