  • Ooooohhhh! Thank you, thank you! Something to tame my obsession of thinking about my new camera that I might not see until after Thanksgiving.

You are a saint to find and report this stuff, and to provide links….

  • Nikon, still showing intense buyer’s regret. The D700 looks like a great camera, the 5D MII should be as well.

Why not get over it and go shoot some photos. And then post us a link to your work so we can see if you’re a photographer or just a guy with too much money and time on his hands.

  • go back to nikonrumors.com

for people who have invested money in canon lens, there is small chance they are migrating to nikon

  • Can sell your all cheap Canon EF-S lenses on e-bay, craigslist, kijii, etc. and pickup good quality Nikon VR lenses for a D700.

D700 manual is 472 pages, 5D2 manual is less than half of that. Pay more for Canon, get less than half as much as Nikon.

  • Hey Nikon,

I ordered two extra batteries for my 5d Mark II at $45 a piece. I’d say that pretty much deflates your argument. Having read the D700 manual (I’ve used one several times), I feel comfortable stating that it essentially holds your hand through every function of the camera, describing the same thing multiple times. The 472 pages are full of redundancies and over-statements, but that seems to be your approach to education as well, so congrats on your choice of Nikon. The D700 is a great camera, but my old 5d still has better image quality and, last time I checked, Nikon doesn’t have a pro-line of lenses at fixed F/4, essential equipment for anyone who does some serious adventure photography. Get a life and knock off the brand imperialism. Maybe instead of posting crap for a living, you could try to take some pictures. Maybe you’d learn that a 51-point autofocus system is not only distracting, but completely unnecessary. And just to present the information in a way you’d understand, let me say the same thing in a slightly different way: If you take more pictures, you may develop an understanding of the excessiveness of a 51-point autofocus system and the distraction it causes.

  • Wow. Are you really comparing products based on the page length of their manuals?

What a joke. The better the product is designed, the shorter the manual.

    Just look at the iPod.

  • Can we ban Nikon guy – find the IP and just ban him.

Really, comparing the length of the manual to the value of the camera. What about 99% of all people who won’t even read it, even if it was under 10 pages, let alone 472. Get over yourself. I embarrassed you over at Engadget, and now you’ve been embarrassed here.

  • Oh an just for good measure how about a joke about that we don’t need to compensate for shorter things with an extra long manual.

    Freud was right.

  • Look folks, this a site for people who have chosen Canon products. Many companies make tools for capturing images. Each has its own good features and its bad features, and for each brand this is different.

I, for one, have used Pentax, Nikon, and Canon products. I switched to Canon because (1) I had lenses from when I shot film, albeit cheap ones, and because (2) Canon at the time had a real near-pro camera when Nikon could not get its act together.

If I had no investment in L lenses, even now I might be tempted by Nikon’s offerings – and don’t get me wrong, Nikon cameras(*) have better user interfaces and the company has a better overall attitude – but I’ve come to like Canon image quality, and I especially appreciate their low light performance. As a photographer, that’s key for me.

I have a 20×30 enlargement in my office taken with a lowly 20D. According to the manual for the 5DMkII, a 20×30 is a larger than recommended size for that 21MP monster. My 20D enlargement looks like it was shot on film. Not only did I get to shoot a stream of candidates (more than one roll), I could check my exposure. Ah, the advantages of digital! The point is, the Canon 20D had film quality, even taken with a EF-S lens. What will the 5DMk2 give me? (Besides an excuse to buy a 16-35mm f/2.8 L II?) Answer: quality images.

With a handle like “sfwrtr”, you might guess that I write science fiction. As a writer, regarding the manuals (esp. now that I’ve read both), I have to say that concision is underrated.

(*) All my wife’s P&S cameras have been Nikon, and I can attest to their quality and ease of use.

  • Thats why Nikon dropped the price of the D700 to $2699 from $2999. They were ripping you off NIkon guy!

  • Body’s come and go but glass are forever. Nikon has no lens and the one they have are overpriced. the 24-70 from canon is 1100 and from nikon is 1600, so who is ripping who off.

but it’s your money buy whatever you want at the end you have to love what you have and I love canon.

  • My point wasn’t that people will RTFM. My point was that the D700 has way more useful features than the 5D2 and this is evidenced by the size of the manual. Virtual horizon, matrix metering, real spot metering, and more (i.e. non-invisible) AF zones are a few examples. 5D2’s measly 9 AF points cause distraction since you have to keep recomposing shots. Cheapest price anywhere for 5D2 batteries is $150 – 4x price of Nikon D700 batteries to recovery camera manufacturing cost. Nikon doesn’t rip off everyone like Canon does. It’s easy to get a cheap D700 now.

  • Hey everyone lets try to get along ehh? This site is called “Canon Rumors” lets keep to the topics at hand and try not to bash one another, why are we doing this? No one is making me own and use Canon products, I just do and value any and all information I can obtain about them.

I drive one make of car my neighbour another, I don’t criticize them for not driving the same make as mine. They have options I don’t have, I have some they don’t have but we get along. We all live in the same world.

  • Your car sucks! The manual for your car is only 200 pages. The manual for my car is 472 pages. You overpaid for your car, I clearly got twice the car since my manual is twice as long.

  • Now I know what to do for my book report! ;-)

Thanks. Hopefully there’s a few goodies in there!

  • wow, why are to so concerned with what other people decide to spend their money on? It’s just a camera… Who cares…It’s just a camera. (let me repeat) It’s juussst a camera. There’s more things to worry about. You should pull that stick out of your butt Nikon.

The 5dmk2 will be my first dslr! I sold a few of my large format lenses to get a small kit with a few L lenses to go with. I have rented phase one and canon in that past and the iq has come a long way. There’s still nothing like shooting 4×5 8×10! I shoot mostly editorial and advertising. I’ll probably 20 percent of the features, I shoot on manual 90 percent of the time at the lowest ISO setting. So Im not really concerned with all the bells and whistles, I just care about IQ, so I went with canon.

  • I’m with Obama08… If you’re actually serious about image quality, shoot 8×10! Over 400 megapixels, and you can score a camera for about $300.

Digital is all about convenience, not quality.

Everyone’s all excited about the 5D MkII being 21 megapixels, but that’s the same resolution I get from a 4000 DPI scan of 35mm. You can buy a 35mm Rebel for $15 and get 21MP. Any MF easily beats the MkII, and LF absolutely obliterates it.

But I’m still getting a 5D, because I can take tens of thousands of shots for much less than the cost of buying and developing 120 or 35mm film.

  • This is really just aimed at NIKON guy.

Some people say that it’s not the camera that makes the photographer and in a lot of situations that is true. But the 5d MKII is a game changer. Unlike a lot of people that comment on this stuff, i do actually make my living shooting photos. I have pre ordered a 5d MKII and I have already pre-sold video work that I have not even done yet that far far exceeded the cost of the camera simply based on peoples belief in me that i can shoot video to a similar standard to my photos. This camera has (for me at least) paid for itself and I have not even received it yet!!!

IF You do not embrace the revolution that is upon us then be prepared to be left behind. Simple as that.
