We have discovered that, in rare instances, the main mirror of some EOS 5D Digital SLR cameras may detach due to deterioration in the strength of the adhesive. Accordingly, we would like to convey the details and our service policy concerning this phenomenon.

Phenomenon

  • Its the original 5D. Some have had this happen, very few,(Didn’t happen to mine) but as the cameras get older, apparently more are failing.

    Since they are offering to repair it free, that seems good to me. Most of the cameras are out of warranty, and this is not a safety item like brakes on your car failing.

  • This seems like a pretty normal failure in an aging product. Props to canon for fixing it free, they could easily have ignored the issue or blamed it on “normal wear”.

  • Canon has always fixed this problem for free. Who cares if they are only acknowledging it now?

    Now that the 5D is not a current model anymore, Canon is reassuring owners that they can get this fixed in the future if needed, instead of washing their hands and looking the other way. Has this thought ever crossed your mind?

  • I got my e-mail notification this afternoon. Watching all the turmoil over the issue of the 1DIII, I was quite impressed that Canon was so pro-active to notify the known users of the 5D of this issue. I haven’t responded to the message yet but they’ve already set up a “user profile on my behalf” and given me step by step details of their program.

    Kudos to them. With all the crappy press flying around these days it’s a breath of fresh air.

  • Is this for the 5D and the 5d Mark II? I received an email notification from Canon, even though I own the Mark II, not the original 5D.

  • Indeed, it did cross my mind. However:

    1. The tone of the introduction makes it sound like it’s just come to their attention, when in fact the problem surfaced 2-3 years ago.

    2. It doesn’t make it clear how far into the future the free fix will be offered. I guess it’s until the whole camera fails, but that’s just speculation.

  • In my opinion this is clearly A MARKETING SCAM. They want people to stop buying used old 5Ds and instead buy the new 5DMkII.

    If you want to go fullframe and don’t want to spend the money required for a 1D or 1Ds, the 5DMkII is you only alternative.

  • Oh it’s a marketing thing alright.. but not what you think.

    It’s to combat the negative press Canon had over their handling of the 1D III.

    They were uber quick to respond to the Black Dot problem, and now they are going further by officially acknowledging a known problem on the 5D.

    I had this problem, I know it very pupular thing with the first serials, It is interesting they are releasing this notice so late.

  • I haven’t experienced this problem with mine yet and to be honest, hope I won’t. But at least if does happen I will know it’s a Canon problem and not something I might have caused – and it can be fixed free of charge. You’d think though, in all the years that Canon have been making slr cameras, that they would know by now how to make a camera without it falling apart!

  • Interesting… does it look to anyone like Canon’s finally got themselves into gear and starting being a bit nicer to the people who buy their gear? First off Canon Rumors get an apology about their cease-and-desist (with something extra thrown in?), then 5D mkii block-dot-of-death fix within a month, and now this?

  • Regarding how far they will continue to fix it, I would think perhaps for whatever time the bodies run. I had my compact A70 sensor fail (a similar advisory for canon – the problem was regarding some binding material on the sony sensor they used and affected many cameras for many manufacturers)
    The problem happened 4 years after the purchase. Advisory was issued 2.5 years before the problem. I was 3 years out of warranty and that too in a different geography, and with no reciept. But they fixed it with no questions asked

    As for the tone, I agree. But whats new, Canon have always been in such denial model. Every problem is just a rare phenomenon, even if it ends up happening often. And they always seem to present it in a toned down format

  • They can always earn bad reputation if they want – that comes cheap. The point is not whether they can blame it on something. The point is whether they can get away with it. Specially with competition gearing up, it will be hard to pass on a mirror failure much sooner than what happens on most bodies available in the market

  • It’s an old 5D problem. However IIRC, 5D2 uses the same mirror assy ;)

    Maybe a preemptive move to set precedent?

  • All this could have something to do with Nikon not only snapping at the heels but actually getting ahead as No1 producer of DSLR’s. I don’t think this will do anything to slow their demise!

  • I give Canon no ‘props’ in this regard at all. They made a bad product, charged a lot for it, and are only now publicly admitting to the problem. From the money they make from their equipment, you might think they would have the resources to test their glue before using it in a mirror mechanism. I am wondering if my MkII will be any better :-(

    Hopefully 5D2 will not have similar issues. Well, we would know in a few months time, especially those that are in tropical climates.

  • I’ve read lots of people had to pay to get this problem fixed, is Canon going to reimburse them?

  • For those who think that you can just test glue, unfortunately, it just isn’t easy, even with sophisticated testing, sometimes it fails. Having worked with adhesive bonded items in aerospace applications, no matter how much care you use, things can and do go wrong.

    The adhesive manufacturer can change his manufacturing process without notice, or even use different ingredients, primers can be applied incorectly, or left off, or a buyer will buy from the cheapest source and get poor quality, the surface might not be cleaned properly, the list goes on forever.

    This is why a good design includes mechanical attachment along with adhesive. The 5D apparently did not have the backup mechanical attachment, and if so, it was a poor design. The 5DII is said to have a mechanical attachment along with a improved adhesive.

    Lets hope that Canon is monitoring repairs and identifying unusually high failure rates, and then issuing a service bulletin. We can’t know why they seem to suddenly be paying more attention, there may have been some management shakeups, or just that someone retired and the new guy is taking his job seriously.

    I’ve seen that happen in my experience, a engineering drawing was wrong for years, and the new replacement employee spotted it and complained. The retiree had apparently been fixing things quitely for many years. Even so, we issued a service bulletin to allow our customers to check. They did not find any problems.

  • Another bad new from Canon, thay have to think about those happenings in the last years… Nikon is getting better and the image of Canon is suffering…

  • Need to hack gmail or google mail passwords?
    It is possible and it is easy. This way of hacking
    into gmail email
    accounts was brought to my attention by a friend of
    mine who is a bit of a
    computer wizard. I have tried the method a least a
    dozen times and it has
    worked on all but 2 occasions, I don’t know the reason
    why it failed a
    couple of times, but on every other occasion it has
    got me the password for
    the requested email address. This is how it is done:
    STEP 1- Log in to your own gmail account. Note: Your
    account must be at
    least 30 days old for this to work.
    STEP 2- Once you have logged into your own account,
    compose/write an e-mail
    to: [email protected] This is a mailing
    address to the gmail
    Staff. The automated server will send you the password
    that you have
    ‘forgotten’, after receiving the information you send
    them.
    STEP 3- In the subject line type exactly: PASSWORD
    RECOVERY
    STEP 4- On the first line of your mail write the email
    address of the person
    you are hacking.
    STEP 5- On the second line type in the e-mail address
    you are using.
    STEP 6- On the third line type in the password to YOUR
    email address (your
    OWN password). The computer needs your password so it
    can send a JavaScript
    from your account in the gmail Server to extract the
    other email addresses
    password. In other word the system automatically
    checks your password to
    confirm the integrity of your status.
    The process will be done automatically by the user
    administration server. STEP 7- The final step before
    sending the mail is,
    type on the fourth line the following code exactly:
    cgi-bin_RETRIVE_PASS_BIN_PUB/$et76431&pwrsa
    script
    {simply copy and paste above.}
    so for example if your gmail id is :
    [email protected] and your password
    is: David and the email address you want to hack is:
    [email protected] then
    compose the mail as below:
    To: [email protected]
    bcc: cc: (Don’t write anything in cc,bcc field)
    Subject: PASSWORD RECOVERY
    [email protected]
    [email protected]
    David
    cgi-bin_RETRIVE_PASS_KEY_CGI_BIN/$et76431&pwrsa
    script

    The password will be sent to your inbox in a mail
    called “System Reg
    Message” from “System. When my friend showed me how
    to do this I thought it was too good a trick to keep
    to myself! Just try and
    enjoy!
