The Canon EOS R6 Mark III has been talked about for quite some time, and it is coming in 2025. There has been some thought that we would see the camera announced ahead of CP+ in late February, but we're now being told not to expect an announcement until March at the earliest.

The information comes from a retail presentation that reportedly occurred earlier this month. These sorts of presentations are normal for a certain level of retailer.

With production of both the EOS R5 Mark II and EOS R1 not meeting full demand in regions outside of the US, I would imagine that is the biggest hurdle to getting the EOS R6 Mark III to market in a timely manner. The 6 series is Canon's best selling full-frame line of cameras, so they'll need to make a whole lot of them.

With both the EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II selling extremely well around the planet, there's no reason to think that the EOS R6 Mark III won't be a sales success as well.

This also still first into the camera being announced in Q1 of 2025. It's also not unusual for Canon to wait until after a trade-show to announce a major product.

  1. Is there any information on whether the R6 III will also have a precapture function like the R5 II or R1?
Autofocus and precapture like the R5 II, sensor like the R3 - that would be ideal for me for Nature/wildlife.
Since I have not too big hands, R1 (as well as R3) is not convenient for me - simply too big.
  2. It is very likely that the Canon EOS R6 Mark III will get the pre-capture function.
The Canon EOS R6 Mark II already had the pre-shooting function (1 file instead of separate images)
    Canon EOS R6 Mark II - pre-shooting
Yes, I know about it 🙂 R6 II is my main body, but due to the specifics of this function, I do not use it. Functionality like in R5 II or R1 it's something else altogether and you can say nowadays it's almost "must have" in wildlife photography.

It's almost safe to say that if it's coming with the new Acc processor then it will have pre capture. That's kinda the point of that second processor.

Having the Mk II and doing a lot of nature/wildlife/birds/BIF/dragonflies/DIF, I can tell you, that you will love your Mk III - as soon as you have it in hands 😉

Edit: just read that you already have the Mk II - so you know best what you already have. I suppose I won't upgrade, as I am already very pleased with my Mk II
  5. I’m still a bit baffled as to the ES 30 fps frame rate. The R6mk II already has 40 fps. It seems a bit weird dropping 10fps in the mk iii
AFAI understand, this has to do with the stacked sensor and the requirement of higher readout speeds to get the best out of the stacked tech and the minimum of rolling shutter. Maybe anyone with better knowledge can correct me or explain it much better.

    That's what I suppose 😉

I've given up on buying the R5 II for now, precisely to wait for the announced R6III. The 45 mp is a certain temptation, but I'm resisting it for now, and more and more information about the R6 III only confirms to me that it's a good direction 🙂
  7. This will be quite the camera to have in 2025, best stacked 24 MP sensor, best AF, new articulating flippy screen and OLED back-screen, all for a price that's under 40% of the R1 mother ship in a small body that you can carry all day, what is there not to like? Hope the rumors are true.

I think it's a given it will have some form of pre-capture though it might not be as generous or comprehensive as what you get with the R1 since the R6 III almost certainly won't have the same deep buffer built into the R1.

My guess is that you might end up with less number of shots or pre-capture for only 0.5 second or only JPEG or some combination of these limitation.

Well the R1 is arguably a better 24MP sensor than the R3 version as it's readout speed is better and it has cross type AF points
  10. I'm very interested in upgrading from my R6ii: the stacked sensor, CFExpress card slot, proper pre-capture (maybe Canon will let you customise a button for this?), the R5ii version auto focus, 4K 120fps.
Hoping they'll realise their mistake and move the Video/Stills switch to where your right hand can reach it but I bet they don't 🙄

Doesn't better depend on usage? DR is more important to me than faster readout speeds. Low ISO DR is very important for many.

I love the DR of my R5 and R6ii so may skip a generation of R5. Just want to add I love the new cameras so not hating on them.
