Press Release
Canon today announces the launch of the feature packed PowerShot G11, the successor to the multi award-winning PowerShot G10 – the favourite compact of professional photographers and photoagencies the world over.
Commenting on his use of the predecessor to the PowerShot G11, the PowerShot G10, Gary Knight, acclaimed photojournalist and co-founder of the VII Photo Agency, said: “As a photojournalist who covers warzones, one of the main challenges I face is getting high quality images in hostile environments.
To achieve this I need a camera that offers great image and build quality without the bulk, and the PowerShot G series is perfect for this purpose. When shooting in areas of conflict, it’s important to have a compact camera in my bag that allows me to work discreetly but also provides the level of quality required to get the photos I need. The G Series excels in this respect, delivering great quality images from a compact body that is less intimidating than that of an SLR.”
Professional photographers will benefit from the G11’s greatly expanded dynamic range. Canon’s new Dual Anti-Noise System combines a high sensitivity 10.0 Megapixel image sensor with Canon’s enhanced DIGIC 4 image processing technology to increase image quality and greatly improve noise performance by up to 2 stops (compared to PowerShot G10). The PowerShot G11 also includes i-Contrast technology, which prevents high-light blowout whilst retaining low-light detail – ideal for difficult lighting situations.
The premium quality Canon lens delivers picture-perfect performance, offering a 5x wide angle (28mm) zoom with optical Image Stabilizer (IS). This allows handheld shots to be taken at much slower shutter speeds (4-stops) than conventional non-IS models – allowing perfect shooting in darker conditions or at a lower ISO. Greatly reducing blur caused by camera shake, photographers can shoot at longer focal lengths and in lower light conditions without the need for a tripod.
The digital compact includes the ability to shoot in RAW format and is compatible with Canon’s Digital Photo Professional (DPP) software, ensuring that photo shoots can be easily integrated into a photographer’s workflow.
Stephen Munday, Senior Operations Director, Editorial, Getty Images, comments: “The quality of images delivered by the PowerShot G series are so good that we use G10 images within our editorial library, and our photographers using the G series models do so because of the image quality and flexibility they provide.”
He continues, “The unpredictable nature of news photojournalism requires our photographers to get shots in all kinds of situations, and the size of the G10 allows them to do that without drawing too much attention to themselves. The low-light capabilities of the new G11 will be of even greater help in that respect, as it will allow our photographers to shoot high quality images without flash in even more situations.”
Alongside superb image quality, the compact size of the PowerShot G11 and a 2.8-inch vari-angle PureColor II VA LCD (461k dots) make it the ideal choice for professional photographers to use where an SLR is impractical or obtrusive. The G11 is ergonomically designed for faster, accurate menu scrolling. Analogue style dials for ISO and exposure compensation give photographers instant, familiar access to common settings and features.
“I’ve been a user of the G series since the G5” says Edmond Terakopian, photojournalist and winner of the British Press Awards Photographer of the Year and a World Press Photo award for Spot News. “Recently I’ve been using the G10 which is absolutely spot on; image quality, usability, reliability and build quality are all excellent. It’s the one camera that’s always with me, no matter where I am; whether on or off duty. I know I can rely on it to help me get the picture, no matter what.
Over the years I’ve used my G Series cameras on the occasions when assignments have needed discretion. It’s a satisfying feeling telling a picture editor that the photograph he’s just complemented was from a compact camera.”
The G11 is equipped to deal with any light condition. Low Light mode enables photographers to shoot up to ISO 12,800 in reduced 2.5MP resolution at 2.4fps capturing brilliant shots indoors without the need for a flash, whilst a built-in Neutral Density (ND) filter decreases light levels by 3 stops allowing creative control in bright conditions.
The camera’s highest flash synchro speed has been increased to 1/2000th seconds, reducing the possibility of overexposed bright scenes. A real time histogram displays brightness levels on the PureColor II VA LCD screen, so photographers can easily view conditions and change settings when shooting.
The PowerShot G11 gives photographers the freedom to perfectly shoot fast-paced action. Quick Shot mode takes images almost instantly after pressing the shutter, so fast moving objects are always captured, whilst Servo AF/ AE continuously adjusts focus and exposure to optimise settings when photographing moving subjects.
The PowerShot G11 can be used with a wide range of Canon accessories, including the Speedlite 270EX, 430EX II and 580EX II; Macro Twin Lite MT-24EX and Macro Ring Lite MR-14EX flashes for enhanced shooting options; the Speedlite Transmitter ST-E2, Speedlite Bracket BKT-DC1 and Remote Switch RS-60E3. Underwater photographers can even team the PowerShot G11 with the specially designed Waterproof Case WP-DC34 – an underwater housing allowing full control of the camera at depths down to 40m. The PowerShot G11 includes an HDMI port so users can review images on a full HD screen via an optional HDMI cable.

I am loving that swivel screen! Hopefully it makes it’s way to the DSLR’s!
cool !
Very impressed with this camera, if I had not just bought an SLR I might be interested if I needed an advanced P&S. Personally still don’t care for the “retro” styling but I could get over that.
No mention of video capabilities.
The MP step down is nice but that’s about it really. Lets see how the real world tests turn out.
Right now leaning toward the Lumix LX3.
All the info is up on the canon site http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=144&modelid=19209#ModelDetailAct
G11 with only 10mp I don’t belief it that’s a first ever in digital cameras, successor with reduced pixel count…
the new s90 with F/2.0 lens and the new 10mp sensor might be the answer to the lx3 from canon
Unfortunately I’m looking for a hotshoe, take advantage of those fast sync speeds.
Well, looks like the megapixel race has now given over to image quality somewhat. Good news for photographers.
Now begins the necessary retraining of the masses by our salespeople.
as long as higher ISOs are better I dont care.
whats what a noob would say.
dpreview has a spec-list. Video resolution is 640×480 30fps Max, no HD.
So is that it now for today? :-(
no HD video is a killer for me… remember my odl SD400 was already doing 640×480 @ 30fps many years ago
Well they’re going to save the best till last surely? And there are 25 new products being announced and the conference is still going:

With this cam, Canon admits defeat in the MP wars. They’ve been wasting their time for the last two years!
Also, with this launch, they are all but admitting that their tiny-sensored CMOS stinks at this point. Where’s the SX1 refresh? The absence is telling.
Also, a number of their OTHER released cams have HD with a CCD; why can’t the G11 and the S90?
S90 is one of the most interesting in the release, excepting the lack of HD. The other most interesting is (surprisingly) the IXUS200. 24mm wide. 5X zoom. HD in a pocket. That’s pretty neat — might be a nice “always with” camera. If they had only put HD in the S90 — they’d have a run away hit. It still might sell well without it, but they could have killed Panny pocket offerings with the S90 if it had HD.
agreed. Wasn’t that exciting, now was it.
That 7D hint though, is interesting.
No HD video and reduced pixel count!
HTF am I going to fill up my new 8GB SDHC card now?
All joking aside, this might actually be the best case I’ve EVER witness of a company listening to their professional consumer-base.
Oh my god, they did it. Not only the nice screen, also the reduced MP count is great. I love Canon for this step. Iso 12500 with 2.5 MP? Whats the MP count used on Iso 6400/3200? Time to sell my G10 and hope the G11 is available before my next holiday in the middle of September …
thanx for the link!
wow, it’s amazing that my G9 remains competitive and relevant two generations after the fact. that’s sort of sad. the only thing I like about the G11 over the G9 is the 28mm (which was already introduced in the G10) and the lower MP count. but honestly, that was a bit of a let-down. Unless I was a G8 or lower owner I wouldn’t upgrade to the G11.
A new Underwater Housing is also available, at a very affordable $200
Unfortunately the lack of HD video means I might pick another camera as my next UW camera.
I’ll wait to see what the reviews say about the low light performance
So, what is improved comparing to G10 or G9? Other than new screen (which is smaller) and higher ISO limit?
This is completely insane, no HD video, that is really going to come back to bit them hard.
What a stupid move.
The fact that the G11 has less pixels than its predecessor, the G10, gives me some hope that, in the SLR segment, Canon will do the same and reduce the number of Pixels (especially in the EOS 60D) from 15 to some 12 Megapixels.
the G11 would be my favourite canera, if it had Full HD Video, i want a hight quality Camera und do not want carry two devices with me … I sold my G9 before month (big mistake …) i have a SX1, but i want the size and the quality of the G10/G11 … Sorry, Canon
FART!
BORING! this camera will not get the g10 owners to upgrade.
FART! no SLR stuff
+1
FARTs!
FART! pants
FART! guff
smelly FARTs!
So my G10 still better resolution when in better day light?
I rather get S90 for low light instead of G11
agreed – in the press release , Canon was glorifying this camera for photojournalist . well hate to break the news but photojounalist want HD video too ( and a larger sensor ) . They have all the chickens in line , i.e. digic 4 , HDMI output but they forgot to lay the egg ! A dissapointment . Like most, I’ll be eagerly awaiting the pany gf1 announcement .
No HD movie…?
can only think that is due business matters…. as most of the times…
It seems to be targeted as a reporter’s camera — look at the endorsements. If that’s it target market, then all of its changes make perfect sense. Even the lack of HD video makes sense, since I don’t think that a reporter would be expected to also be a videographer. Still photography would probably be enough of a stretch and there’s the issue of sending big video files back to home base.
Who makes this new high sensitivity high dynamic range 10MP CCD sensor? Sony? Or is it a custom EXR sensor from Fuji? It looks like Fuji EXR sensors cannot support data download rates necessary for HD video, so this may be one reason why G11 does not have 720p or 1080p.
All the sample images on Canon’s website are at ISO80. It is strange that the PR makes such a big deal of the new high sensitivity sensor and they don’t post a single high ISO image in the sample gallery…
I agree, I am quite tall, and have leg problems that prevent me from getting on my knees for low angle shots. My A650 lets me do this, so I am looking forward to other cameras that have the feature.
I don’t get why they haven’t done HD video with the G11? That was the entire reason I didn’t get the G10. What a stupid move on Canon’s part. It’s just software you idiots!! I like the 10MP sensor as I’m sure it will do REALLY well with noise. This is just a bunch of crap. I was looking to pick up a replacement to the waterproof 10D also, but it looks like they don’t get that either. What’s the deal Canon? Put HD (at least 720p) in all of your cameras. I love my 5Dmkii but I don’t feel like bringing that with me everywhere I go and I would NEVER bring that anywhere near the river. Hopefully they will drop a firmware update to the G11, if not I guess I’ll have to check out Panasonic or something. GET A CLUE CANON!!!!!!!!!
I’m with you, ISO is WAY more important than MP’s. Like I’m going to make a 24 by 36 print from a point and shoot! Lets get the 8×10’s to not look noisey and I’ll be more than happy. Now if we could just have some kind of usable video this camera wouldn’t totally suck.
+ A GREAT BIG 1
They would have had a home run if they had the HD video, even if just 720p. Yes, it appeals to a specific market that does not “need” HD video, but if it had HD video, it would have broadened the market of people who would have bought it.
I can honestly say the lack of HD video is why I will not be purchasing this camera, whereas if this feature was there, I would have bought it.
No, I’m not a professional, but I like taking professional shots and having the ability to shoot some decent video is great while on vacation.
Kudos to Canon for reducing the MP Count. Hopefully, it will payoff in the iso department, we’ll see.
i’ll kick your ass canon xD
need better eos!!! xP
10 MP is more then enough for a compactcamera.
It’s better to have less noise and more detail.
Noise deletes detail.
And also for the size of RAW files, it has no use to store noise on your drives.
+2
I noticed that the hd video only comes with the 12mp cameras.
I’m really curious here. After having 14mp cameras why go back to 10mp ccd? I think 12mp would have been better for all cameras. I believe 10mp will slow down the sales unless the buyers stop caring about the mp? but then, what are they going to care about? hd video, zoom.. and they don’t offer it.
At least Canon finally entered the wide angle lens game.. It took them a while.
I’m shocked – not just that the rumour from yesterday was spot on (kudos to you, tipster!), but that Canon has admitted defeat in the MP wars.
This is definitely a shift that will take some education of the average consumer, but a major brand like Canon has the ability to make people re-think what a good camera should be – high IQ, not necessarily high MP.
DPReview asked rhetorically “how good could the G10 have been if Canon had put a LX3 like sensor in it?” Hopefully the G11 is the answer. I can’t wait to see the first reviews and pictures.
This seems like it will do a much better job for the underwater role that the G series has acquired. Its dark underwater and the better noise performance is much needed. Any word on wether or not the case will have an underwater Hot shoe port for triggering strobes? If it does then that set up will be as close to perfect as I can imagine
lets see how this put up again the LX3 in terms of image quality and lack of HD video.
You make a good point; for years, more MP was obviously better. Now, to explain why “less” is better!
No HD video? Bye…
On a side video, is it technically possible to add HD video later with firmware upgrade to G11?
I think this is an insult – a slap across the face with a smelly wet rag. No CMOS, no increase in sensor size like Olympus E-Pen, no sensor tehnology enhancements like Sony’s new rear illumination sensors, no HD video, no Digic V. Many people, including myself, had big expactations for this camera and for Canon to get back ahead of the competition. With this camera they’re barely catching up, and you got to wonder: is Canon holding back for strategic reasons, or are they simply behind? I hope reviews of this camera, and their new DSLR puts my comments to shame – we’ll see.
“Where’s the new xxD cam?? Why did you lie to us???” – the best comment EVAR that I’ve seen posted here since this site started. Anybody remember that guy who thought all those rumors to be the gospel truth? LOLOLZER
This No HD video Crap will be the mistake of the ages for Canon. Do they really believe they can keep getting away with this sort of junk?
I was going to buy one until I saw no HD video. At this point not even 720p would cut it, a G series should have 1080p.
Sorry Canon, you lost another round and the others haven’t even shown their gears!
It looks like G11 and S90 have the same sensor as Ricoh GR Digital III. Here are some full size images from this digicam, including a few ISO400 and ISO1600 shots. The image processing engine is different, but these samples should provide some idea about how the G11 and S90 sensors will perform at high-ISO.
http://dc.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/review/special/20090805_307174.html
Being an owner of the G10, I was thinking to upgrade to G11 if it has the HD movie. But now, I guess I will wait another round. Hopefully, the next G12 will not drop down to 5MP.
Congrats on previous rumor being accurate!
Really like the tilt/swivel, high on my list. I’ll wait for some testing before I make a final decision.
Somewhere in Canonland there must be consternation that their home-grown CMOS sensors were not ready in time for this year’s releases. At one point they boasted they were two years ahead in sensor technology. That would have enabled hd output, and perhaps a somewhat larger sensor size. I think the economy is a contributing factor here, and their new production facilities have not been ramped up as quickly as they would have liked.
Still, the G11 looks pretty good to me, it hit a feature very high on my list (tilt/swivel) and missed on a feature lower on my list (hd video). Your list may vary. :)
I so totally agree with you. I didn’t pick up G10 after I sold my G7 only because I was certain that Canon would be forced by competition to put HD video on G11. I love the camera, but HD video is probably a deal maker. They could have nailed the market with G11 and S90, but they probably shot themselves in the foot by skipping on that feature. I still have the S80 and I don’t really see a reason to upgrade now. Oh well, back looking at Panny….
The SD980 is an all around better camera, it just needs a hotshoe and you can just get rid of this stupid G11. I like the touch screen, the size, the HD VIDEO, and the other new features. It’s even the same Digic IV processor!
Look how Canon avoids saying anything about video in G11 in their promo news. Which means they understand it sucks they just couldn’t get HD video in G11 in time.
Waiting for G12 then… /yawn
It is a fake. A fake by Canon. Ha Ha.
Real G11 specs include a vga display and hd video.
Were they running low on the Digic 5 chips or something? It seems that if you’re going to sell a Point and Shoot in the price range of a cheap DSLR you should have some options that make it worth the money. Need HD Video, Need Digic 5, Need and option with and without the tilt screen.
Agreed. No HD video (720p) is a major disappointment.
Totally stupid. Had to be a purely business decision from the product management side of the house. This way they can still offer a clear functionality differentiation between their higher-margin DSLR product line and the P&S product line. You want a semi-decent camera and also want to shoot HD video? Well, we have a perfect product for you in our DSLR range….
It’s all about money.
I wonder how many potential buyers will end up spending their money on a Lumix camera. What a waste of an upgrade.
640×480, barely VHS quality. Why not put at least DVD quality 720×480 on it Canon? But really, even youtube takes 720p – we’re not in the 70’s-80’s anymore.
@Jaro65,
I completely disagree with your argument they they want people to buy a DSLR, the SX1, SX200, SD980, SD970, SD960, SD940, SD780 ALL shoot HD so there are much cheaper cameras people can buy within the canon brand that shoot HD. The SX1 supports raw and shoots HD. All of it’s main competitors have HD in this class of camera.
So that rules out the pay more to shoot HD idea. The only remaining option is some idiot in marketing that made this decision should be fired. If it was a technical issue they could have pushed back the launch date to September.
That is the problem with huge companies that have massive marketing teams with there focus groups etc, they completely loss track of what people want. The camera will not sell well and hopefully they will learn a lesson from it.
No HD on an advanced flagship P&S camera???? Hello, Canon, its 2009!!! This is lame and plain stupid.
So how big is the potential addressable market? How many reporters are out there?
? Admitted defeat in MP wars? Must be why the 5D2 is 21MP. They’re just target marketing this camera. I don’t buy the photojournalism nonsense, that sounds like marketing BS to make their real target think they’re buying a serious PJ camera. But let’s be real. PJ’s are not running around with P&S’s unless Canon is paying them to or as a small backup.
About the only thing they got right on this is the swivel LCD, the rest is big so what as far as I’m concerned, especially with the token 10 year ancient outdated video quality.
Yeah, the G11 is making the EP1 look attractive, how sad is that.
I’m in full agreement.
I think they made a fantastic move lowering the MP count. Seems to me that they really focused on image quality for this update.
Of course we will have to wait and see, but I think they got a lot right for this update.
By bringing the number of MP down to that of the LX3, Canon has admitted that very-high MP on point and shoot cameras (and their smaller sensors compared to those on DSLRs) is not the way to go for the best image quality.
On DSLRs, the story is obviously different.
MP means nothing when you use tiny sensors. my four year old 5mp canon point and shoot takes better pictures than my new 10mp fancy canon point and shoot. make the sensor bigger. get the images clean above 100iso and then work on resolution.
I’m with you Annony. sigh. same size sensor.
Finally somebody is saying this!!! how far down this comment list did I have to go before somebody called it out right?
All these rumors have been saying BIGGER SENSOR! Where is it? sure lower the pixel count to get better images. that’s one way of doing it, or you could MAKE THE SENSOR BIGGER.
I really don’t want to get the Oly or Panny micro 4/3s. I want a canon because the pictures will look better.
I’m very sad today.
yes this is a fine camera for what it is but it’s not breaking any new ground. it’s just more of the same tiny tiny tiny tiny tiny tiny sensors… sigh.
that’s funny
+1
Canon finally started listening!
first the video on the 5D mark II, now lowering the megapixels on whats to be an awesome camera… to bad on the HD video… hopefully CHDK can do that
Camera RAW seems awesome too
one thing is pixel density… saying it stayed the same on the sensor… thing is, it doesnt have to be like that…
when you look at the sensor you see a 2D array of pixels with black lines… if you make those black lines smaller or make each phototransistors better, you WILL GET BETTER IQ!
yep seems awesome! i miss HD video though…
Olympus, and Panasonic… Nikon has a patent… Sigma can do it… Why the same small sensor size? Is it too risky with the economy to try something new? I simple refresh is all Canon is willing to try? They are thinking about low light with dropping the mp, but this is all computer shoehorning. All the things the journalist photographers in the press release said are true about being unobtrusive. when I go out with my friend at night i have my 40d on my shoulder and people freak out at the site of a big giant camera. I want to look like everybody else with my little(ish) camera. I need a bigger sensor size. this tiny G11 thing ain’t gonna do it, and Canon knows it. I NEED GOOD QUALITY OVER 100 ISO. I need it at 1600. Even with all there new low light tricks, there is no way it going to look the slightest bit of good.
The flip out screen is nice. my first point and shoot had one, and I became a bit of a ninja with it.
Tech head readers. help. Why didn’t the G11 get the f2 lens like the S90 has? If all these changes are to help in low light, why not the fast lens?
It’s simply mad….! We all need more from this camera and we have waited only to be let down. We need more MP better image quality and HD video…. If you wanna sell stuff, make stuff that people wanna buy! Very, Very disappointed! No stock shots from a pocket sized camera this year then….
So the G11 has a 1.9 pixel pitch compare to the G10 1.6 pixel pitch. So does it add about 1/3-2/3 stop of low noise high ISO improvment?
Canon sells many more Rebel DSLRs than G10s. Does that answer your question?
I am amazed that people are complaining about the lack of HD video. Did you ever consider that high quality 640×480 h.264 video from a sensor with low noise and high DR may actually look better from 720p video from a digicam with a crappy sensor and a bad video compression engine?
Exactly. There’s only one good reason for someone to be on their knees and it isn’t to take a picture. Swivel LCD’s are the bomb.
Half assed listening though (still no audio firmware upgrade for the 5D2, nor 24p or 720/60p…). I could live with the lower MP on this G11 camera assuming it is indeed fantastically better in low light than the G10, but no HD is just lame. Seriously, my cell phone does 640×480 video, and most of the competition now has HD. This only makes the EP1 look more attractive for a travel camera.
even the flagship DSLRs dont have HD video, so what’s the fuss all about? Go buy the camera you need. Its not like you have invested in Canon lenses so that you have to be brand loyal….
It amazes me how many people a griping about no HD video and fewer MP when just as many would scorn Canon for “putting video in my camera” And adding more MP and the cost of image quality. The G10 is killer IQ at low ISO. If the G11 is better IQ (which is probably why it’s lower mp) for 500 bones… I’ll buy it.
Kudos to Canon for a purist aproach and I can only hope I portends well for the upcoming SLRs.
yes The Ep-1 is a pro travel
i can belive why canon dont put a cmos sensor or a big ccd why
now is only atractive for my kids
Only 10 megapixel? They could have done better than that.
+1
Truer words have never been spoken!
The fact of the matter is, every time something new comes out, people focus more on what isn’t there than what was done to improve it!
+1
This is very true!
No HD Video? I AM HAPPY!!
I will save some money because I will not buy this camera. I am so happy!
Marco Togni, Italy
I’ll skip this one, and look forward to the nikkon P1Dx, next year…
I wish they kept 6x zoom (28-168) – would be a fair compromise between 35-210 of G7/G9 and 28-140 of G10/G11. The days of my G7 are numbered. I wonder about ISO performance, esp. the low-light 12800 mode – is it equivalent to G7’s ISO 3200, and if so, is G11 ISO 1600 much better than G7’s ISO 1600?
Yup, and the return of the swivel screen makes much less noise than its disappearance (at least on the G series).
I don’t get it, why are you people whining about a compact when obviously you are looking for high end DSLR features.
G11 = 5 years late upgrade and cheap move to save the money and turned back to the customers whom without they are lost.
I think sonyericsson phones are better equipt than canons p&s cameras.
shame
SIZE! Sometimes we don’t want to carry around the big SLR, but we want as close to the quality. that’s why we pay attention to these cameras. It’s also why the Olympus Ep-1 is sold out everywhere. We are waiting for Canons answer to the Ep-1. If Canon builds anything like it it will sell like MAD.
I could care less about video. I want a well made camera for light travel. I just went to the Canon site and downloaded the photos of the women that were taken with the G10 and the G11. The G11 image appears so superior that if the ISO’s up to 400 are clean, well…I gotta get me one of these!
I own the Canon G9 and use it mostly for UW photo and video doing macro work. I also make educational video films when I travel, so I carry along my HV20 HD camcorder. While I liked the G10’s wider lens and higher megapixel for resolution (I use flash underwater so high ISO noise is not a factor) the G9 has HD video (at 15fps mind you, but somewhat okay underwater) and time lapse features, so I’ve been waiting for the BIG G11 improvements like HD video at 30 fps and even higher resolution, so I could leave the HV20 at home and travel lighter. The G11 is a DOWN GRADE! What was Canon thinking? Looks like I’ll have to stick with the G9 and feed the piggy bank for a 5D2 and UW case at the tune of $7K ouch. I was hoping the G11 would save the day. What a disappointment for us UW and video photographers.
4:3 NTSC has a pixel aspect of 0.9, so a 720×480 DVD is the same as 640×480 with square pixels.
I was being sarchastic. It should have HD, 720p at a minimum. The SX1 is also 10 MP and has 1920 x 1080 (30 fps)video.
Wow what a bunch of angry people. It’s as if you’d already paid for some mythic camera and are now being stiffed on it.
I’m not sure what kind of quality HD video you were all expecting to get on a P&S, or how long the battery should last compressing all that video down to H.264 just so you can fit in on a tiny memory card.
Seriously, if the product is really so terrible, go buy something else. You don’t have to wait for Canon to “finally get their act together”: just go across the street and buy the camera you so sorely deserve. What’s that? It doesn’t exist? …I see.
Unfortunately for Canon, going across the street and buying a different camera is exactly what many are going to do.
We are upset because the G series have been fantastic cameras. The absence of HD video is a disappointment for those of us, many who are road warriors and know the meaning of packing light. HD video would have been the natural upgrade and was expected and waited for by many.
The Canon G series underwater cases are inexpensive and a great way to get a quality rig for a reasonable price. It’s become the most popular UW medium priced outfit for many reasons: resolution, raw, manual control and video. Having a underwater rig that shoots full HD at 30fps with manual control would have made it a must have upgrade. Most other P&S’s have HD now, so why not Canon especially when my G9 has it, mind you at 15fps.
We want Canon to move ahead of the competition because they are a great company with excellent reliability and service. They made a mistake here not including HD video and if we don’t tell them in one way or another, who is going to…just better sales from across the street? I’ll keep my G9 until something better comes my way. Hopefully, it’ll be a Canon like I’ve been using all these years.
Oh, New Camera and Modify Digic 4 Technology.
Why are you all complaining, five years earlier you wouldn’t have complained, because video probably wasn’t even on the camera. You should be happy they have video in the first place. It’s a camera, not a video camera. You can’t always get what you want. It looks like a great CAMERA and that’s all that matters. I mean it’s not like you expect great camera’s on videocamera’s. Why not buy a good video cam that has high mp pictures. I need a camera so I am a first time p&s camera and this is it. It’s got great low-light, raw, and manual. I’m happy. Shut UP!!!!!!!!
When is this thing gonna be available?
Got my G11 at a Best Buy store in Maine today. But they still seem to backordered online.
I stayed away from the G10 due to the stupid high resoultion / noise. I just picked up a G11 last night to complement my 40D.
Noise is still a tad high, but hey, it’s a point and shoot. a world better then the G10 though.
And for those hoping for 5MP, the G11 actually sports a feature where it will drop to 2.5MP (no honestly) to quadruple the ISO performance.
(E.g. ISO 3200 in this mode, would perfrom like ISO 200 on the older G10) it’s THAT much better…
The highest resolution of DVD is 0.3MP
resolution of HD is between 0.9MP and 2.1MP.
10MP is 5X higher then 1080p HD! If you think you need more from the point in shoot (in trade for IQ) then you should be using your cel-phone to take your pictures.
I agree that the lack of HD video was a bummer, What is also a bummer is the inability to zoom while recording video.
On the flip side; the lower resolution video is capable of gathering much more light per video pixel then an HD alternative could have with a given sensor size.
In the end, you will get very high quality Video in low-light conditions, v.s. smudgy flat (HD) video in the same lighting conditions.
I wish I could post a comparison of HD Video to SD video and how TERRIBLE the HD looks indoors by comparison.
No, ISO 80 on G11 looks 2 stops better then ISO 80 on G10.
S90 does better in low-light at the wide angle but worse at the tele end.
the ISO range is 80-3200
The Night mode cuts the res in 1/2 to quadruple the light per resulting impage pixel.
80×4 = 320
3200×4 = 12800
In other words, Night mode at ISO 320 will have the same IQ (less the resolution) as ISO 80.
12800 will be the same IQ as 3200. (less the resolution)
Maybe your Kids know more about how stuff works then you?
If only it had HD, I would be happy.
I don’t care about IQ, I just want HD.
What? Good HD TV’s cost $5000? I’ll pass, I don’t want quality, Why would I buy a Quality HDTV when I can get a really crappy LCD that looks like pasty garbage for 1/4 the price! I mean it is HD after all, and that IS* all that matters! I can’t tell my friends I have a quality TV, but I can tell them I have HD! LCD FTW!
Why do you assume having HD means bad IQ? HD on the G11 would not lessen the IQ at all. Your sarchasm makes no sense.
I really don’t see what the hang up about HD video is. I’ve yet to see video on any still camera that comes even close to competeing to a camcorder.
wow. it’s amazing to me how so many people are looking for a camera that does EVERYTHING. just like people who look for a phone that does EVERYTHING. like some people on here said, if you don’t like it, go buy something else. and for the people who say that is exactly what’s happening who cares? there are other people out there who love the G series that i’m sure Canon isn’t too worried about those of you who aren’t happy with it. as far as i’m concerned, if you wanted a camera with HD video, something else is going to get compromised in its place. i think canon is doing a fine job keeping things simple. maybe it’s time that you people moved to another brand of camera…as far as i’m concerned, a camera is for taking pictures. if you want to shoot videos, get a camcorder.
