Canon has announced the Canon Powershot V1 in the quietest announcement ever. I think everything we told you was accurate, and here are the details as we know them right now. As we go, We are actively finding more information, so this article will be updated.

The sensor was as we thought it would be: essentially a 3:2 aspect ratio of a micro four-thirds sensor, complete with Canon’s Dual Pixel AF II. This will be great for the PowerShot family, giving it the excellent autofocus and video focus capabilities we see on our RF cameras. The V1 will utilize the DIGIC X processor and will support eye AF for humans, cats, and dogs.

The mechanical shutter is quite fast, allowing for 15 fps, and the electronic shutter will take that further allowing up to 30 fps. The sensor will output 14-bit RAW files with the mechanical shutter, and 12-bit when using the electronic shutter.

Canon PowerShot V1

  • 22MP Type 1.4 (18.4 x 12.3mm) Dual Pixel AF CMOS sensor
  • 16-50mm equiv. F2.8-4.5 zoom lens with 3EV ND filter
  • Full-width 4K up to 30p from 5.7K capture
  • 4K/60p from a 1.4x crop (1:1 pixel capture)
  • Up to 30 fps stills capture in e-shutter mode
  • Cooling fan for extended video recording
  • Wired or wireless video streaming
  • Multi-function hotshoe for flash or audio accessories
  • Fully-articulated rear touchscreen
  • Headphone and mic sockets

The one question I had about the rumor was the focal lengths, and even Craig and I were unsure if translations or misinterpretations were happening there at the beginning. Given the small nature of the camera and the size of the sensor, a 16-50mm equivalent focal range appears to be decent.

The lens size starts to make more sense when you consider that 4k/60p is a 1.4x crop, giving a 24-70mm equivalent field of view. For me personally, a 16-50 stills photography focal range is right in my sweet spot.

The camera is listed on Canon’s Japan site for 148,500 yen or around $988 in USD. It is also listed in China for 5999 Yuan (around $899 USD)

The camera is 118 x 68 x 53 mm (4.65 x 2.68 x 2.09″) in size, making it around the same size as the EOS-M’s M100/M200 or the G7x Mark II camera bodies to give you an idea of the physical size. It weighs approximately 426g, making it relatively heavy for its relative size due to a bigger battery, heat sinking, active fan, and what I hope is better optics.

Canon has supplied a thermal image for this camera, and it looks like they are taking this seriously, with some heat pipes, heat sinking, and airflow openings. The camera also has an active fan, which is expected to allow 4K/60p for over 2 hours with the overheating threshold set to “high”.

If we look at the side view, you can see the air intake and exhaust much more clearly.

However, Canon has listed the recording times as being far more conservative. There is no mention if this with the overheat set to high. I suspect this is with the camera set to normal overheat operation.

For now, this is a Canon Japan, China, Korea, Hong Kong, and Taiwan camera, which doesn’t surprise me much, as the compact camera trend is happening more earnestly in these regions than in others.

This camera has a USB-C port, and the Japanese specifications mention that it can be used and charged via USB power.

Press Release

From Canon Japan (machine translated)

Canon will release the PowerShot V1, a compact digital camera that enables easy, professional video and still image shooting, in late April 2025.

The PowerShot V1 is the second compact digital camera in the PowerShot V series, which allows users to enjoy full-scale video shooting, following the Vlog camera PowerShot V10 (released in June 2023).

Compared to the 1.0-type sensor installed in a normal compact digital camera, the 1.4-type CMOS sensor is about twice the area, achieving high image quality and high sensitivity.

In 35mm equivalent, it covers a zoom range equivalent to a focal length of about 16mm to 50mm *1 , and is compatible with a wide range of scenes such as selfies with multiple people, snapshots, and Vlogs. In addition, it combines the functions required by creators, such as high-performance AF and a variety of shooting modes, with a compact body, making it easy to shoot full-scale videos and still images.

Canon will continue to expand its models that can both shoot full-scale videos and still images to meet the needs of a variety of users.

Main features

An integrated lens camera that combines professional photography performance with a compact body

The combination of a 1.4-inch CMOS sensor with a maximum effective pixel count of approximately 22.3 million pixels *2 , the first Canon compact digital camera to be equipped with the DIGIC X image engine, achieves a maximum standard ISO sensitivity of 32,000 (when shooting still images).

Canon’s proprietary AF system, Dual Pixel CMOS AF II for PowerShot *3 , also achieves high-speed, high-precision AF. Furthermore, the inclusion of the Eye Detection *4 function makes it possible to detect the eyes of animals, whose movements are difficult to predict, in addition to people, making it easy to focus when shooting.

With full-fledged shooting performance packed into a compact body, you can carry it around with you on trips and enjoy shooting.

Video recording functions that allow for greater freedom in video expression, including the incorporation of a cooling fan

The camera is equipped with a cooling fan inside, which efficiently releases heat, reducing the impact of temperature rise on video recording time. In addition to realizing 4K crop/60P video recording, it supports “Canon Log 3”, allowing recording with rich 10-bit gradation and excellent color reproduction.

Furthermore, shooting modes such as “Review Video”, which is suitable for product reviews, and “Image Stabilization Video”, which is effective for handheld shooting, *5 make video recording comfortable.

High-speed continuous shooting at up to 30 frames per second ensures you never miss a subject, and still image shooting functions enable a wide range of creative expression

When using the electronic shutter, continuous shooting at up to 30 frames per second is possible, making it possible to capture fast-moving subjects. In addition, the camera automatically recognizes the scene and supports difficult scenes such as night scenes and backlit scenes with the “Advanced A+” mode, and “Creative Filters” allow for impressive shots such as diorama and toy camera style shots, and many other functions that enable rich photographic expression.

  • When shooting video, the focal length is equivalent to approximately 17mm to 52mm in 35mm format.
  • When shooting still images. When shooting video: Maximum effective pixel count approx. 18.7 million pixels. The number of effective pixels may decrease due to image processing.
  • The maximum measurable area is approximately 90% horizontal x 90% vertical.
  • The subject that can be detected is the eyes of people and animals (dogs and cats). Birds and horses cannot be detected.
  • When “Auto Horizon Correction: On” is set, the “Image Stabilization Video” setting cannot be set.

  1. Was the EOS M2 launch like this? I don’t recall. I did buy one on Amazon when my M died (getting a new M2 was $20 more than Canon’s flat repair charge for the M).

it could have been, but i still thought we had more information at the time. The M3 was like that too, Asia only.

I'm rather sad that this wont' be in Vietnam, since I'm there in April and May.

More details now on video recording times. before anyone jumps off a cliff, i presume those are with thresholds set to normal.
  3. It looks like a neat little and yet capable camera. DPAF and 30 FPS sound really great for such a package and I´m sure it will sell like hot cakes. I'm wondering a little bit about the weight of the camera. 426gr is awfully close to the R8 with 461gr (with battery, SD card). Of course, the R8 has to add a lens, but I honestly thought the Powershot would come in at around 350gr (or maybe less), but I guess active cooling and building it accordingly came with a price. I'm also guessing, people who buy the Powershot are not in the market for an interchangeable camera (or already have one) and therefore it really doesn't matter.

After a quick comparison, I'm personally more drawn to getting a R8 (maybe with the 28mm pancake) as a lightweight option, since it is not that much heavier and gives me the flexibility to go with different set ups.
  4. thanks, I'll add that.

this is the strangest release ever, having to go to multiple canon sites to yank what I can find there.
Thank you for looking up the information and putting it all together! Sounds like a lot of work!

There is not a word yet on the German websites (canon or camera retailers) so far.

it's a solid camera for sure given the size of it.

the heat management most likely contributed a lot to the size.

also 15 fps mechanical shutter is no joke either.

for now it seems Asia only.

There is a USB-C port, but no word on if it's a charging port. if it can't charge the camera, then I'm not sure it would release in Europe
  7. USB-C is not the retirement for the EU.

If and only if the battery can be charged in camera, it has to happen using USB-C
And only if it uses a cable, I think wirelessly charging as sole option can also be used to comply with the EU directives.
  8. I'm slightly disappointed at 4k60 needing a crop, this implies that, yet again, Canon is shipping a really slow sensor. I find it strange that the fastest 'crop' sensor Canon is shipping is the one in the R7, which is still half the speed of the one in the R8!

could also be a factor of heat as well.
  10. There is a USB-C port, but no word on if it's a charging port. if it can't charge the camera, then I'm not sure it would release in Europe
The other way around. If you can do charging with the port, it HAS to be an USB-C port.
An USB-C port without charging-ability is definitely allowed in EU.

It is to make one charger (and cable) rule all direct chargeable devices.
  11. Interesting release, but I personally will not be purchasing. Still waiting to see what L lenses are released in 2025. I have been considering the mythical 200-500 f4 lens ever since it was first rumored.
  12. Looks nice and great sensor, but I'm quite suprised by the inusual zoom lens focal of 16 to 50mm (equivalent). I would have preferred a 24-105mm equivalent. 16 to 50 are the usual focals in mobile phones, I want a short tele at least. Then I would buy in a second!

Looks really oriented to the 4K video.
  13. Except the fact that they have not included the horse and bird eye AF, it seems like a quite nice little camera with great features. When the sensor readout is not too slow and the battery life is good, then I guess there will be a lot of potential customers!
