Canon is going to be adding password protection to 10 EOS R cameras in the near future. It could happen as soon as next week.

This password protection is to meet new European Union regulations under the Radio Equipment Directive. The password is meant to protect network protocols such as IP addresses, MAC addresses and other networking systems.

It looks like this is geared more to professionals that may require more network security, it's not really an “anti-theft” thing.

Digicame-Info was the first to report on this future firmware update.

How to set a startup password

The password setting screen will be displayed when you start up the camera for the first time or after updating the firmware. Follow the steps below to set a password.

  • Enter a 6-digit number to set a password , and then press the <MENU> button.
  • Select [OK]
  • Enter your password again
  • Select [OK] to set the password.

When you turn on the camera or when it recovers from auto power off, the [Password] screen will be displayed.

Enter the password you set.

If you check “Don't ask again,” this screen will not be displayed next time.

What if you forget your password?

If you forget your password, there is no way to reset it other than initializing the asset information . Please note that we cannot unlock your password even if you apply for repairs or maintenance.

When you initialize the asset information, the password will be reset and all camera settings will also be initialized. Read more here.

Firmware Updates

We don't think that this sort of feature update is going to come to 10 EOS R cameras along with other added features and bug fixes. Hopefully we're wrong about that.

We also don't know if it will be a required update if you want to move to future firmware updates.
