There is going to be a lot of announcements from pretty much every camera, lens and accessory company ahead of the CP+ show in Yokohama, Japan which begins on February 27, 2025.

At this time, we don't think there is going to be a major camera announcement from Canon, but we're still on the fence about possible lens announcements. More on the latter in the near future.

What we have been told is that Canon will announce “major” new firmware for both the Canon EOS R5 Mark II and Canon EOS R1. For now, those were the only two cameras mentioned.

Canon EOS R1 and the magic window

One of the features that may be announced, but not with 100% certainty is Canon's authencation system for the EOS R1. We know that the camera is equipped with the hardware, but for the moment Canon doesn't make any mention of the little window on the back of the camera in any of their literature.

We weren't privy to exactly what features are coming in the firmware updates, but were told that they were “significant”. I think a lot of us have thought that both of these cameras are just getting started in the feature department and would evolve based on customer feedback.

Canon has announced firmware many times prior to the actual release around trade shows, which can be a decent way of bringing back a bit of hype and selling cameras.

We also weren't told the exact day to expect the announcement, and there really isn't any sort of historical consistency of when Canon has done these sorts of announcements around trade shows in the past.

More to come…

  1. Small wishlist:
    1) in-camera production of RAW pixel-shift, higher-res feature.
    2) increase rate of success for pupil tracking refinements
    3) better automatic bluetooth reconnection to phone (my car's connection is very grabby without any input by me, why not my camera?)

  2. I´d wish for a customizable button to assign AF mode concerning "animal, people and vehicle" AF. I don't like having to go through the menu to change it. On the other hand, I don´t believe the R5 mki would get this firmware upgrade, so never mind 🙂

  3. 4k downsampled 60fps for the R5II? Yes it would get hot as hell, but why not at least give us the option. Especially since they have a cooling fan accessory.
And maybe pixel shift high res like in the R5. These modern Ai features are a joke.

You mean changing the subject to detect? You can already assign that to a button to quickly toggle between them.

What do you mean exactly? Can’t you already assign a button for that? I don’t have your camera but you can do that on the r1 - seems a strange thing to lack anywhere else.

Nothing to be wished for, you can already customise buttons to do so.

  7. Open gate video recording would be nice, I can use every spare pixel for stabilization in post!

Also, where’s that Lightroom integration Canon was talking about during the launch event?

I feel like a fool now. I checked my settings on my R5 and still couldn't´find it. Where can I find it in the menu?

Did you look into customise buttons? Choose a button and try to change it via that menu

Well, I do... in Germany there is a saying:
"Anyone who can read has a clear advantage". Obviously, this time I have a disadvantage 🤣
