Canon USA Cancelling Camera Price Drops Due to Tariffs

We all know what’s going on economically on the planet, and it is obviously a challenging time for a lot of businesses. Japan is currently being hit with a 24% tariff and that seems to be affecting Canon USA’s pricing plans.

Cancelled Price Drops

We have been told that price drops that were scheduled for May on both the EOS R7 and EOS R10 have been cancelled in the United States. The price drops were going to be significant.

This situation may also end Canon USA instant rebate programs for the foreseeable future once the current program ends.

Things may change quickly if Japan and the USA work to solve the current situation. If things do continue for months, we do expect to see prices increase on Canon gear in the USA.

We have been told that price drops on the EOS R7 and EOS R10 are still scheduled to happen in the UK and EU. We haven’t spoken to retailers in other geographic regions than the ones mentioned here.

We won’t pretend to be economists, but there may be a possibility of collateral damage that may affect pricing globally.

Refurbished Canon USA Gear

These tariffs may also affect Canon USA’s popular refurbished camera and lens sales. As you may know, refurbished gear at Canon USA is generally dealer credit returns, so when products start costing more for authorized retailers to bring in, those return credits will be higher in dollar value.

We don’t know how this is going to affect things outside of the USA retail market.

Summary

How this all plays out; we have no idea. However, if you’re looking to buy some new gear and can swing it, now may be the time to take the plunge.

  1. I was hopping to see the price drop for the RF 14-35 f4, guess that's not going to happen.
The latest news is as a response to some countries are negotiating and those tariffs going to 10%, the stock market "skyrockets" (this is CNN's word choice - not exactly Trump fans). Don't give up hope, yet!
  2. Were this regular discounts? Because when not, they might be an indicator for some new planned APS-C stuff in July/August. I know there is something to come, but I just try to make a connection here. I know that it's a common thing to discount cameras bevore a successor hits the market. Just my speculation.

My recollection is that in response to COVID, Canon rased prices about $200. After Covid had become less serious, in lieu of bringing the original price back, Canon made a sale price.
  4. Was all this s..t really necessary?

    No.

Canon does use China for a lot of things. Even if the US and Japan come to terms, the China trade war will disrupt supply chains globally and still have an effect on pricing on most everything. It's pretty much a game of chicken with those two. Good times!

I didn't mean Canon....They are not responsible for this mess.
    I meant those stupid tariffs!
  6. ... the China trade war ...
I think it is more a trade world war, because not only China is getting tariffs.

I've just listened to a podcast (German POV) about this "foreign policy".
They ended up with the theory that this will lead to a new world trade order with China stepping into gaps, that Mr. T. leaves open.
Did you know that Japan and South Korea already negotiating (say talking) with China to intensify trade relations?
Japan and South Korea! The closest partners of the US in the Asia!

I'm losing hope this can turn out ok

    I already did.
There is a reason why the principle of "separation of powers" is the fundament of a lot of Constitutions and political systems.
Sad, if it doesn't work any more.
  9. It's slowly become corrupted with ideologies becoming more extreme. Something must change either with controling bias or we'll see even worse problems develop after this.

I’m afraid you are right, to quote BTO “You ain’t seen nothing yet”.
