Another person claiming it exists
I received another email from someone claiming Canon will in fact launch a waterproof/shockproof camera for PMA.
Specs
10.1mp
2.5″ LCD
3.5x Zoom (35-122)
Waterproof to 8 meters
Drop resistant to 6 feet
CR's take
This camera concept seems like a no brainer for Canon. Olympus has proven there is a market, time to steal some back. Still take this with a grain of salt, I've received nothing solid from regularly good sources.
cr

no wide angle, that’s too bad
hmm…. i think the canon dive case that I have for my sd850IS works just fine…granted if they could give me the sample flexibility in a smaller package that would be cool…. one difference though is the depth rating.. the dive case is well over 100ft…this camera is 8m…a bit over 25ft? I dive deeper than that when I snorkle sometimes… a bit disappointing but I guess it will not cut into their sales of dive cases that way :P
Im a fan of canon products, but if these specs are right, i will buy the FT1 from Panasonic with 28mm wideangle and HD Video …
I’ve been waiting for a waterproof/shockproof camera with good picture quality for a long time to carry around when my DSLR can’t come with. So I’m excited about this rumor.
Panasonic announced the DMC-TS1 on the 27th of January that will be a direct competitor with this Canon camera. Unfortunately, it looks like, as usual, Canon has left out a couple very desirable features. The two that come to mind are a wide angle lens (DMC-TS1 = 28mm) and HD movie mode (DMC-TS1 = 720p). According to the above specs the Canon can go deeper and be dropped from a little higher, but the wide angle and movie modes are more important to my needs.
Um… Looks like Anonymous was thinking the same thing I was.
Interesting. A good underwater compact would be fantastic. Oly’s do 3 metres or so don’t they? 8m would be a huge improvement.
Olympus have two classes of tough cameras, one rated to 3m and other to 10m. I have seen the better model in 15m with no leak.
5-6 mp with low noise underwater (low noise in red channel) and max depth 20m will be ideal for my snorkling.
Have you got a link to the 10m one?
yep… if they wanted to take it one step further and improve it for diving/snorkling, they can make a provision for an auxilary light…. something a bit more powerful than the built in (with its own power) that is off to the side…there are a couple of manufacturers out there that make compact digitals like (need to look up the name again).
I’ve been waiting for Canon to offer something like this!
I recently bought an Olympus 1030SW for a snorkeling trip to Aruba. It was the only half-way decent compact waterproof camera available. Reviews on the Digital Photography Review web site were mixed.

I almost bought a waterproof shell for an older Canon 550SD ELPH camera, but it was more than half the price of the $300 I paid for the 1030SW and is a bulky thing to try and snorkel with, especially since I swim to the bottom as much as I can! It fits nicely in one hand.
The Oly takes pretty good photos and like Canon ELPHs, very well in full sunlight, but pretty noisy in low light. At 10MP, pix are strangely hazy. Shooting at 5MP, they’re quite good. Using higher ISOs makes it worse. I tried to keep it at 80 or 100. The flash is hot, so I shut it off even when shooting under rocks 15 or 20 feet below the surface, etc. The equivalent 28mm wide angle is nice, too bad Canon is opting out of true wide angle.
Shooting underwater is great fun! If you think you might like to, get one!
I’d assume that Canon will offer a much better camera than Olympus, although for a camera of this size class, 10MP is way too much. It would be better to have a larger sensor at 6 or 7MP max..
Nice introduce!I just have new choice to order Digital camera equipment.I have new baby and I wanted high speedshutter digit cam to require her photo.
