DIGIC V
There has been some rumblings lately about DIGIC IV being phased out in favor of the “V” in the upcoming 60D and 1Ds Mark IV.
If this were the case, it would be the first time that a same Mark version 1D & 1Ds would have a different processor.
60D Special Feature?
A regular has told me that the new feature for EOS will be GPS functionality.
Other suggestions I have received are Wifi and 120fps video. Both of which I'd say are highly unlikely.
Another person has said the camera will get a new form factor. It'll be slightly smaller than the 50D and have no top down LCD. It would still be a sealed magnesium alloy body.
All CR1 suggestions for the moment.

Slightly smaller than 50D? That’s 550D!
I think top down lcd is great!
hmmm no top down LCD. That would be a mistake, that’s the reserve for the cheaper end. But maybe the 60D will the last in the cheaper end with the 7D being the first prosumer.
any iso specs?
Yeah, I don’t see them ditching the top-down LCD on the 60D… that would be one of the main points to upgrade from the already-oh-so-good 550D… it is for me. And I won’t pony up to the 7D just to get it…
There is a nice space between the 550D and 7D to fill… just take the 550D guts… put it into a 50D sized body (or slightly more compadt), add a single DIGIC V processor, reduced AF system from the 7D with less points, flip-screen back LCD, same metering (or better) than the 7D, and Voila… done deal for a few hundred more than the 550D and few hundred less than the 7D.
I doubt Wifi… they make a killing on those wifi grips… the 60D will be more video-focused (therefore the flip screen), but an extra 120fps video mode for playing with would be fun. The new Digic V may be able to handle it… and make sure they stay ahead of Nikon in the Video department… unless the new D400 has a trick up it’s sleeve…
All those 60D rumors sound fake to me
Yea…I really hope the top down lcd stays though, kinda handy when u just wanna check settings.
really hope the 50d doesnt become a d90 it better have a magnesium body and weather sealing.
second that
Let’s assume the info is not fake… Without top LCD I’m going for a 7D. Top of the line prosummer is more than enough for events.
Pixel binning for video please.
What is the timing of a 60D ?
Assuming that Canon sticks with the 18MP theme, won’t the 60D need a Digic 5 to handle all those pixels to get 6+ fps?
My guess on the new feature is the articulating LCD. I have fooled with a couple of cameras that have the feature and it seems like it could be pretty handy.
So you’re suggesting a camera that’s pretty much better than a 7D except it’s got a few less AF points and is cheaper…
Foot, meet bullet.
One of the many reasons why I went from the 350D to the 40D is because the 350D was too small for my chubby hands. So I hope that they do not make it smaller.
Losing the top LCD would also be a mistake, I really detest the way the rear display works on the later xxxD range.
11 May has been mentioned here before.
Third time’s the charm.
Hell Id love to see better video if they put a new V in there, perhaps higher resolution (1080P isnt really all that great) or RAW video thats less compressed……60P is good enough for the frame rate department, 120 would be nice but id rather see RAW or res increased!!!!
If it does have a “special feature” I bet it is a flip out screen
To be realistic, I think they’ll just take the 18MP sensor, a new DIGIC 5 processor to reach the 6fps standard and the same video feature the 550D has, maybe with a 1080p crop mode to make it a little bit better. The body and the auto focus stays the same. I just can’t imagine that the top LCD is being removed, that’s one of the biggest advantages of the x0d series over the xx0d series.
When they introduce RAW video, higher video fps or an even higher video resolution (2k or 4k movie), then in the 1D Mark IV. I’m sure that Canon wants people that need this very advanced feature to pay the full price.
The one rumor I liked in the past about the 60D is that it gets a new 13MP sensor with much less noise. This could actually sell very well, since lots of people use the SLR for lowlight photography and this could be the new “special feature” over the 7d and 550d. When you already have a lot of EF-S lenses, you can’t switch to full frame easily and buy either this camera or keep your old one. And since only a few lenses can resolve more than 12MP on APS-C, this would especially make sense. But as already discussed here, it’s not very likely.
Canon keeps the pixel count high to sell more L lenses as the new 70-200 f/2.8L IS II ;-)
pretty boring rumors if you ask me… it’s been like that for a while here…
I use the top LCD less with the 5DII than I did with the 40D. The multi-control button activates an info screen that has most of the frequently used settings and they can be modified right there.
I wouldn’t want to lose the top LCD, but if they have all the same settings instantly available on the main LCD with one touch of the multi-control button then I don’t think it would matter much to me
Agree. But a Nikon d90 body still feels good in large hands. That is what I think the xxD line should be shooting for.
Sony makes an announcement 11 May. Doubt they would do it then. I keep wondering about May 17 as that is the 10 year anniversary of xxD line.
I had hoped the digic V was nearing release, but it doesn’t seem like it now that the CR guy points out that there has never been a 1d and a 1ds with different processors. Ah well.
For that matter, pixel binning for the smaller image formats (mRaw, sRaw, and JPEGs) as well, please.
From experience, it should be fairly easy to implement.
I would love to see raw video in DSLRs as well, but I’m afraid Canon will not improve the video quality in order to prevent the DSLR cameras from being an even stronger competition to the digital video cameras.
Dont forget, that the 1DIV has been released in a rush, because the D3s, so i think 1DsIV will have the digicV
your CR guys are taking info from my wish list!
I should put copy right on my wish lists so no one steals them..
oh yeah, GPS on dslr, thats what we need !!!
Poster claiming to have a photo of the 60D here:

If that picture is for real, then I the 60D retains the topdown display; why would you need push-buttons (and in a straight line) if they were not along a display?
when will this be announced? will it be on june or aug? as 40D and 50D were out on aug…i cant wait for this cam
I think making the 60D a bit smaller is a good idea.
If it’s a bit more compact and lightweight, then it would be a cool travel camera that is still better built than the rebels.
If it stayed the same size then the 60D just gives the message ” I’m like the 7D, but not quite as good’
Will 120fps Video also force us to pay more$$$ to MPEG-LA for professional use?
The DIGIC IV is pretty mature what concerns image processing, therefor I’d expect in the 5th version more processing power and video related enhancements (pixel binning?).
If the price level of the 1Ds series is maintained, I expect it to be quite a different compared to the 1D MK4. The upcoming Pentax 645D, which theoretically should offer better IQ and more MP at the same time, will definitely be a viable alternative to some of the 1Ds users. It is less versatile than the 1Ds-series (no good very high ISO, lack of LV etc) but when resolution matters (which has been the case for the 1Ds users), I see that pretty tempting. Moreover – the Pentax MF should be out by the end of this month in Japan; and by the time the next 1Ds is announced the Pentax is available everybody in the world, with proven features.
“…but id rather see RAW or res increased”
You would rather have something higher than 1080p?! How do you even view video above 1080p? I can’t see many people wanting this.
I think there should be a seperate website for video rumours as this is getting stupid. There needs to be a canonrumors.com for people who just take photos, and a videocanonroumors.com.
I am sick of people requesting a 24-70 IS, as all they want it for is for video. the current 24-70 is fine for normal pictures!
120fps (and higher) would be fun to play with. I doubt that it would be full 1080p resolution though; more likely to be progressively lower resolutions as the frame rate goes up like many of the latest superzooms offer.
Then again, high frame rates played back at normal speed is quite commonly used in Hollywood, and the 5D2 has certainly made some waves there… DIGIC V is likely to offer more processing power and bandwidth than the superzoom equivalents too, so maybe high frame rates at useable resolutions wouldn’t be all that far fetched.
1,000fps at resolutions suitable for Youtube etc. on the 60D perhaps?
More like a photoshoped 50D picture. Notice how it doesn’t contain the new Integrated Speedlite Transmitter found in the 7D and 550D.
CR guy, let’s agree on not posting any CR1 rumors till the 60D is physically announced, ok? keep posting news or rumors from reliable sources. I know we’re all excited about it but there have been too many different rumors to the point that made me believe that many CR1 sources are just having fun sending anything they can come up with.
Will the Digic be rebranded, slightly? They already have a Digic V – for video.
Higher video frame rates will certainly be THE main design requirement for the DIGIC V. For the time being, however, I’d be surprised to see anything faster than 120 fps in full HD.
As a fringe benefit, we can also expect higher stills frame rates.
I’ll put my dime on it would be announced with a new EF-S lens on August or September.
Should be fairly easy to implement. The real question is if the resulting resolutions/images sizes are all that interesting.
Take the 21 MP of the 5D2, for example. 2×2 binning gives you ~5 MP, 3×3 binning ~2.3 MP.
Would anybody shooting at such low MP bother to go for RAW?
Video is a different story. Just the anti-aliasing you get from binning would be worth the effort.
May 17 or 18 sounds very likely to me. In time for the summer vacations market, and the anniversary makes a nice occasion, too.
I’d very much prefer GPS.
And please keep the top LCD screen and don’t shrink the body.
It is quite possible that the 1Ds4 will have two Digic-5’s in order to shift the massive MP around. It is almost certain that it will have more MP than the current 5D2 and 1Ds3.
If Canon can’t steal from you wish list, your wishes will _never_ become true ;-)
Actually, the Digic 5 could be the new feature that sets the 60D apart from the other current models.
High Speed video with enhanced resolution =
High Speed photography
I think the ability to record higher FPS for normal speed playback is almost certainly going to be a feature on DSLRs sooner rather than later. Think about how many times films have featured some kind of “Bullet Time” and how effective it can be – “The Matrix”, the explosion at the end of “Leon” and so on…
What is particularly interesting is if you take the throughput of DIGIC IV (which would almost certainly be exceeded by DIGIC V) and punch in some frame rates. Working off just 150MB/s (a conservative estimate) that gives:
1920×1080 (1080p) @ 72fps
1920×1080 (1080i) @ 145fps
1366×720 (720p) @ 150fps
1024×768 @ 190fps
800×600 (SVGA) @ 310fps
640×480 (VGA) @ 490fps
480×320 @ 1000fps
So it’s certainly do-able on bandwidth, and some of those options are REALLY nice!
but imagine, wishes coming true,
AND Canon paying for it!
For a feature not seen in any other Canon cameras, I would rather have the following features in this order:
– IS in body
– Flip-screen
– GPS
If it’s the GPS feature, I wouldn’t care much. With it, to me, it’s just a 50D with additional gizmo.
A lot of family photos I take with my 5DmkII get printed in 4×6 size, and for that purpose even 2.3MP would do.
I wouldn’t take any photo in 2.3MP to begin with, but I would in 5MP, e.g. in dark conditions and/or when wishing to cram more photos into a memory card.
What exactly is the point of GPS in a camera? I generally know where I am when I take the picture and remember later where I was. I can see it as a custom order item for U.S. military special ops forces, but it seems useless for civilian forces.
Well personally I always use the top screen on my 5DII. The LCD is reserved for chimping and histogram checking.
They don’t “rush” cameras, they take months/years to develop.
No mic holes?! Probably BS
I would love a GPS functionality. I see it as a very useful thing.
Of course I know where I am when I take a picture but so I know the time, the camera, the lense and the aperture. And yet all these meta data are automatically recorded for my convenience.
120fps sounds sweet, I think the 1Dsmk4 will have the DiG!C 4 rather than 5, because I think Canon uses it’s most matured version of CPU in their 1Ds series and when the 1Ds mk4 will come, it will be the most a Digic IV can get,
in my opinion
This site has gained a huge number of viewers using the rumor format. Its for entertainment as well as the occasional accurate Rumor.
In reality, Canon keeps the details of new models very secret. Even Canon employees working on the design only know about the piece that they are dealing with, and salesmen are told nothing substantial.
Details are finally leaked 5-10 days before a announcement, mostly due to the fact that canon has to start making information available to their salesmen and a wider circle of executives reviewers, and customers. Some of these leak out details, but most keep their mouth closed for fear of being banned.
Only Apple does a better job of keeping things quite.
60D will have to be smaller than the 50D for me to get it. Already have the 550, it’s a different animal.
60D with less wt. & smaller would be good indeed. And then make a better w/a lens ! the 15-85 at 15-18 is not sharp enough, even at f9 ! own it… I know. :(
A bad copy perhaps? All the reviews are consistent about having the WIDER range sharper than tele end of the lens.
It is a photoshopped 50D, just compare them side by side and you see that the only difference is the 60D-logo instead of 50D.
Definitly a different animal, it’s to small for me.
I guess it’s a personal preference.
Ditto. It’s a gadget feature.
For Bullet time you’d have to buy a couple of dozen 60D s.
Place and wire them for computer controlled shutter release and have a software to mix it with computer
graphics.
What you mean is plain old slowmotion.
GPS is just to simplify the upload to Google earth. At least the pics will be located correctly.
Of course also very usefull for photographers with Altzheimer desease.
I agree. The admin might be inventing these rumours.
For all we know.
Then again they might be true. Only with time will we see.
Id like to get a double the 1080p resolution video DSLR .. where the FULL HD resotion is 50% of the pixels of the sensor. That kind of resolution should be easier to convert into since it’s 50% of the pixels.
Give it alumium surface memory card reader slot .. where the heat of the card get’s tranfered to the hull of the camera.
Better live view and HD hdmi out. And pro wheater seals. and oh yeah Dual CF slots and Raw video :)
I use my top screen whenever the camera is not on a tripod to use the live view 10x focus.
Canon should take a note from the Nikon D90. That size is a perfect middle ground between the 50D and the rebel sized cameras.
Image stabilization is immensely useful for photographers shooting still subjects in low light or on a tripod with tripod sensing IS in less than ideal conditions. IS allows me to use lower ISO to achieve lower noise or keep my frame rate fast enough to minimize subject blur in low light. Anyone who has used the superb Canon 17-55IS will attest to the utility of IS in a wide to medium tele length focal range. It just can’t be beat. Expect improved optics in a 24-70 successor in addition to IS. The lens’ weak points are soft corners wide open throughout the range, 24mm CAs, and oh so much sample variation (this is particularly well documented).
Those who pine for an update to this lens do so for the reasons I listed above. It would also be sweet to get one of those new locking hoods made of the new polycarb material (think 100L and 70-200 2.8 II) that resists scratches.
I for one do not get tired of hearing people ask for an update.
They rushed the final development. Rush is being used loosely of course. You both are right.
I think so too. But maybe the 60D will rival the 7D in all respects save for a few things folks can live without like 6 fps instead of 8 and less weather sealing. The thing people will appreciate is a low low price tag. Maybe $1099? Toss in a new feature or two like GPS or a swivel screen and you have a mighty attractive package or backup/wildlife camera thanks to the 1.6 crop.
Definitely not.
That would mean they give away the holliday season and then at photokina they would have two new cameras at once.
That would be usesless for them.
The 60D is a consumer camera and they would never want miss the summer when releasing it.
Lenses please.
24-70 2.8 IS
14-24 2.8
85 1.2 IS
50 1.2 IS
35 1.2 IS
100-400 f/4 IS
Steve Job probably threatens to break the neck of anyone leaking anything.
You’re the dork you dork. :P
Well I suppose they have a bunch of prototypes and they choose one to compete with Nikon. LOL
That’s a lot of IS :P
just get a bigger memory card or another they run cheap
Also useful for consumers using certain photo organization tools (such as on an Apple computer) in which photos can be organized by location using a GUI map, etc.
35 IS? Get a grip.
But Steve Jobs could never carry out that threat because he is a pussy.
take one out and try it. the test results show it to be sharp by 24 mm, not at 15-19.
I shulda listened when I read.
That is also in my wish list.. :p
Thanks Nikon..first for offering 7D and now 60D
Can’t have the best of both worlds. Probably better off getting a Canon 10-22, 17-55 2.8 is.
14mm f/2.8L II IS FTW!
Impressive numbers.
At some point, however, you have to take the exposure time into account, not just bandwidth.
Bluetooth would be a welcome addition. (for connecting a GPS device and tethered but wireless shooting, while keeping battery drain low)
That is OK if you know beforehand exactly how the photo will be used/printed.
Some of my family pics end up in A4-sized photo biooks. 5 MP would probably be OK, but 2.3 certainly not.
Which pictures are chosen by Grandma and the Missus is totally unpredictable.
I’d rather go for another 3(!) memory cards, they are getting cheaper faster than I can look.
I suppose they watch closely what Nikon (and maybe some others) is doing, and when they make a move, the R&D department gets a friendly mail from some big shot to freeze features *NOW*, and to have the new model in production in 5 months.
Depending on how advanced the project is, the rest if more or less a rush job. The art in R&D is to anticipate when that mail from the big shot will arrive. With the 70-200 Mk II apparently the guess was excellent, as the final product seems very mature.
I think it is very useful when traveling on vacations. If I get to visit a lot of places in a short time, I tend to forget where exactly each picture was taken. This is especially true when walking through an unknown town for a whole day (Think a random tour of Kyoto temples – a year later they pretty much all look the same, especially when you pick out architectural details).
You could say the same about other EXIF information. I generally know what time it is when I take a picture. I know what lens is on the camera, and to what aperture I have set it….
Nevertheless, all that information is handy when organizing or searching images later. And to be honest, for everybody except pixel-peepers location is more interesting than exposure details.
Someone else pointed out that GPS is likely to drain a lot of power. Therefore I would want a custom option to disable GPS (to save power) or to preset a GPS update interval or maybe even a “get GPS position now”-button.
That depends on how many MP they pack into the 1Ds4, and if 2 Digic4 can handle that amount of data fast enough – i.e. if they can get enough fps.
More memory cards will not make a dark scene brighter.
Which camera is Canon going to unveil at Photokina, other than the 60D ?
No, but you can do the binning/downsampling afterwards, in post processing.
On the other hand, if your point is that there is no use in recording noise with high resolution, then you are right.
There are many potential uses for a bluetooth connection. Off the top of my head:
– external GPS device
– external data storage
– external microphone for video or commenting still images
– remote control with some kind of display of the camera’s settings
– flash control, would need upgrade of flashes or external receivers/flash bases.
Point is: If you want to save power, switch off the main display and check all the settings on the top LCD which does not suck that much juice. However, if you want to check your pictures right at shooting time, you’ll need the main display anyway.
There is also the limitation of the file size on CF cards (probably they switch to SD anyway) which is 4GB due to the FAT32 format of the cards. So 1000 FPS (also at lower resolutions) would not give you long footage time.
True.
And I can convert Raw to JPEG in post processing, as well as decrease JPEG size and quality. Yet, for some obscure reasons Canon has decided to allow photographers to do that on the camera body as well.
IS? Hel-lo! ;-)
That would be cool.
The position would be for where you’re standing though. I think it would be good if they could also store the coordinates of the subject too.
If the camera knows its own position, using an internal compass and the distance information for the focusing system, you could work out where the subject is too.
I don’t think you have ever tried to send any large file with Bluetooth? It takes ridiculously long time. In this context the files are pretty large as well so for file transfer we will not use Bluetooth.
Ah, the new feature: Canon is adjusting the system so that pictures are not taken directly — they are purchased from the Canon store!
yeah the hype is always too high. got the 2.8 and a 10-17 tokina, but hey…they said…yeah.
when will i learn not to buy into the hype of new stuff ?
1Ds4
d90 has an LCD on top though –
I agree that a camera that is bigger than rebel but smaller than 7 with a mag alloy body would be good…
1200 bucks about right at release. Would make for somewhere around 500 increments from rebel (700ish after 6 months usually) to 60D to 7D to 5D
BT for external control is fine… GPS, remote, etc. But not for data… that’s what $600 WIFI grips are for.
In fact, BT could be pretty handy… I like the idea of BT for GPS… because I DON’T like the idea of GPS mounted to the camera, or just tacked on.
One more reason to finally get rid of FAT32.
AND there is the direct-print button.
The mystery is why people use the in-body functions ;-)
Who cares if the chip has a 4 or 5 printed on it, as long as the camera takes pictures (and shoots video). I would not count that as a feature.
GPS?
Articulating screen?
Some video function or other?
Steve Jobs beat cancer, and you’re calling him a pussy.
Pussies don’t beat cancer.
I bet the only thing you’ve ever beat is your meat = internet tough guys
Why settle for f/1.2 ? I want 50mm f/0.95 IS USM !
It is not as easy as most people think. If you pick 2X2 from the Bayer sensor, you will have red, blue and green within that 2X2. What color should it be after binning?? You can pixel binning a Foveon sensor without wrinking an eye, Due to teh sensor has three layers and each layer is all the same color
I hope this 60d is almost as good as the 7d…
Seems that the T2i/550D is selling ‘poorly’ in Japan. See April sales in BCNRanking. Earlier Rebel models achieve more than 20% market share in the first half year of release.
Japanese companies tend to pay a lot of attention to the demands of their local market.
I am sure Canon will look into this.
Not sure what the Japanese market wants. But if it’s lower pixel count, then, we may see a reversal of the megapixel race, much like the G11 vs G10.
The 60D should have a smaller form factor, not too small though: something similar to the D90 is probably fine. And they may want to consider sticking to 12 to 15 MP on the APS-C sensor if that’s what the market wants.
Sony has just switched their stand on in-body stabilization. Their latest NEX offerings all make use of OIS in the lenses.
So, you can forget about IS in body for future Canon/Nikon camera bodies.
m.43 got a fair share of that market.
also sensor and A/D converter read out time, i dont think it can be a continuous output, must be discrete kinda something.
nikon d2x with bayer sensor had pixel binning 2:1
sorry it was d1x
What’s the best guess as to the 60d US release date?
I am debating the 7d versus the coming 60d…any thoughts on which one to buy?
tick tock, tick tock, tick tock… still waiting for any updates/news/release info on 60D … this is worse than waiting for Apple to release info on the iPad.
@Mark: Thats true, just thought the same thing. I think we are now in the period of “end of May/early June”… So anything new on the release date?
