Nice lens
DPReview has completed their indepth review of the new L macro. I haven't had the chance to play around with one yet.
From DPR
“Overall, then, the EF 100mm F2.8 L IS USM Macro is an easy recommendation if you're looking for exceptional image quality regardless of price. However potential buyers do need to appreciate that the increased cost over its older stablemate appears to pay mainly for the Hybrid IS system, which despite its clever technology isn't hugely useful for actual close-distance macro work. Of course it's still a great benefit for general-purpose shooting, which mustn't be underestimated, and the new Hybrid technology appears to be a step in the right direction; but the marriage between macro and stabilization remains an uneasy one.”

oh why not. Yay.
Forget the link?
Yes… :)
Thanks :)
Glad I hung onto my legacy 100mm f2.8 macro. It is ‘crisp’, but you need a tripod. Oh well… turns out the IS on the Macro can’t compensate for the ‘loss’ in focus from the shifting when hand holding. So capturing the wondrous macro shots that are crystal clear remains the work of specialists.
I wonder why someone doesn’t make a ‘macro’ camera that uses a small sensor (for that great depth of field) designed specifically for low noise. Wait.. could a G11 be a decent macro camera if you shoot at ISO 100-200? You can buy the whole camera for the price of a macro lens…. ;-)
You could probably two, seeing at their cheapest “L” lens is the 17-40, and that retails for around $800 new.
You won’t in a million years get Nikon Rumors cut and paste aspect of a review that are critical of Nikon products but here in Canon Rumurs it is completely different.
This keeps you warm at night, yes? :P
I’ve used the 100 L macro for a while, and found the IS to be useful. No, it doesn’t help if you’re moving back and forth, because that shifts the plane of focus – no IS system compensates for that yet. But in terms of tilt motion – it works EXACTLY as Canon said it would, and I find it quite useful, even in macro application.
The IS vibration might keep happy in bed?
WTF How much!!!!!!!
Glad I’ve got the old model
I think that again dpreview proved once more their high class in this review. As a nature photographer I’ve got enough experience to say that stabilization in macro photography has limited usage and nothing would replace tripod/monopod + macro rail + high quality prime macro lenses in range from 30 to 200 mm f/2.8. You can use Helicon Focus to play with DOF, but naturally looking pictures always have limited one. We humans don’t see sharply from edge to edge and our pictures should show sharply only important portion of an image. I consider using tilt & shift and wide angle in outdoor photography as some kind of laziness. For me natural perspective is the priority where applicable. I like sentence “Hybrid technology appears to be a step in the right direction; but the marriage between macro and stabilization remains an uneasy one.” Maybe not a marriage but an experimental field.
Photozone has had its review up for several weeks. They review it for both full frame and asp-c cameras, which I personally appreciate. Here is the link to the review for the full frame cameras:

DPR also tested on both APS-C and FF fyi.
Of all the lens test reports I’ve encountered (and I do look at photozone’s) I think DPR’s are the most thorough and satisfying. Plus they always post plenty of full-size samples – the best part IMO.
I agree that CR is a class-act site. Bravo CR guy.
That’s a very good news, I was planning to get the version non IS, then i’ll actually probbly wait a little bit to see more about the new one :)
Okay thanks. I was not interested in the lens, but I happened to see the photozone review before, so I thought I would share the link. Knowledge is power. :)
I have to think that focus stabilization is only a matter of time though. Instead of deflecting a lens element the system could move one forward/back.
Many people have alos become fans of Paul Smith Shoes since they came into the market. I also one of them , I very like Paul Smith Wallets and <a Paul Smith Belts,It designs very good.
