The Canon EOS R1: One camera to rule them all… in sales

Yodobashi Camera has posted its sales summary for the second half of January, and the Canon EOS R1 has resumed its rightful placement on top of the leaderboard.

It's incredible what twenty-four megapickles can do.

I think Canon took the first two weeks off to give mere mortal cameras a head start heading into the final two weeks of the month, considering that the Canon EOS R1 didn't even place in the top 10 the following half-month period and then woke up, and proceeded to lap them all.

Canon EOS R1

Okay, the above was in 100% jest. I want to see how many of you will read to this point before writing a scathing forum post ;)

Yodobashi is a top camera retailer in Japan that regularly gives us insight into the prosumer market in Japan.

I have no idea why the Canon EOS R1 jumped up to the number 1 position at this time. All of the preorders should have been cleared last year, and it is very unusual for a high-priced professional camera body to top the sales rankings well after the initial orders are cleared.

However, Canon is not going to complain (and neither will Yodobashi (cha-ching!)) when Canon places #1 and #3 with the Canon EOS R1 and Canon EOS R5 Mark II – with the cameras priced at 1.1 million and 600,000 yen, respectively. They'd rather sell an EOS R1 and related camera accessories and lenses versus the #2 placed Nikon Z50 II.

Speaking of Nikon, Nikon continues to sell its two newer APS-C cameras well, placing them in the top 10 (the Z50 II and the Zfc), and Fujifilm continues to have the darling cameras – the X-M5, X-T50 and X-T5.

Yodobashi Camera Top 10 for January 2025

  1. Canon EOS R1 Body
  2. Nikon Z50II Double Zoom Kit
  3. Canon EOS R5 Mark II Body
  4. Fujifilm X-M5 XC15-45mm F3.5-5.6 OIS PZ Lens Kit
  5. Sony α7C II Zoom Lens Kit
  6. Sony α7C II Body
  7. Fujifilm X-T50 XC15-45mm Lens Kit
  8. Nikon Zfc 16-50 VR Lens Kit
  9. Canon EOS R50 Double Zoom
  10. Fujifilm X-T5 XF16-50mm Lens Kit

And yes, this makes the 1,394.23 top ten list in which the EOS R100 was non-existent.

  1. One camera for the Dark Lord of Canon on his dark throne
In the Land of Photo where the DR shadows lie.
One camera to rule them all, One camera to find them,
One camera to bring them all and in the bright light blind them

  2. It looks like the R1 convinced many DSLR 1 series owners, what the R3 could not fully achieve.
Time has now come to announce the RF 200-500...
Yeah about that 200-500.....if it's an f4....it aint gonna be small....or light....or cheap.....

I really want an RF 500 f/5.6 L. Like the old EF 400 f/5.6 L. Small light sharp and some reach, fits easily in a backpack. I still use the 400 5.6 a lot on my R1 and R6. IBIS helps it along a lot. 🙂

  4. Where’s a1ii? I thought that “superior” high MP camera will captured the whole pro market 😛
It is in the Sony intensive care unit, recovering from shock after hearing that Sony will release a lens with an f8 opening.

  5. Funny thing is the R100 has consistently stayed in the top ten on Amazon US. Currently #4. Richard may not like it, but it does sell in the US and likely China, too. It will take pictures at least as well as a 100D/200D/250D and I found both the SL1 and SL2 to be fine little cameras. I have since donated both to kids and grandkids, but I have lots of satisfying images from each. For the money, the R100 will bring new entrants to the photography game who can't, at this point, afford more. The R100 is the low price leader and sells for less than most 1/2.3 imager cameras. The only camera with a decent imager that comes close is the Panasonic G7.

  6. This is quite easy to explain. Some big agency or project made a sizeable R1 order from Yodobashi. It will drop below top 10 again next month.
And I thought all big agencies were buying the wonder of the century, the A1 II...
Believe me, I read it here from well informed camera and market experts! 😛

Sony has chosen to sell it exclusively to a strictly limited and deserving photography elite. Not to the vulgum pecus!

  8. Quotes about Canon waking up and taking over in the top spot? I was just here to see what everyone had to say about megapickles...
Even one Megapickle uses up a lot of cucumbers. .

The funniest thing about the FE400-800G is that lens is rumoured to be not sharp enough while being heavier than RF200-800. Let alone the might gem RF100-400.

If it's commercial order, the agencies can order directly from Canon. Otherwise we could have seen a9iii a1/a1ii Z9 being the top of the chart because agencies are buying them in a lot.

R100 is the only option for people who doesn't want to go through the used market. It's what 1xxxD used to be.
