The Canon EOS R50 V was announced to a fair bit of fanfare. The new APS-C hybrid shooter target camera has been quite well received thus far. While the camera shares the EOS R50 name with a V added, there are a lot of improvements over the original.

While a lot of the upgrades packed into the EOS R50 V are video focused, there are still a lot of things for photographers and streamers to be excited about.

Unless you need an EVF in your life, there’s really no point in buying an EOS R50 over the EOS R50 V. I will add that the EVF on the EOS R50 is already hard to use if you’re used to bigger viewfinders. It’s also a very small camera that can be difficult for some to hold to their face comfortably.

Summary

We aren’t big fans of the “EOS R50 V” nameplate and think Canon could have done something else to differentiate “V” lineup of EOS R cameras, but they know more than use in that regard, and it probably doesn’t matter.

We aren’t sure if there will ever be an EOS R50 Mark II, as Canon’s market research may show that an EVF and built-in flash don’t matter to the target consumer.

The Canon EOS R50 V looks to be an extremely well thought out camera and at its very affordable $649 starting price point? It’s a camera that is going to find its way into a lot of camera bags, both by new customers and seasoned Canon shooters.

The Canon PowerShot R50 V begins shipping later this month.
