Canon EOS 7D
As anticipated Canon has today announced the EOS 7D digital SLR. It boasts a new 18MP CMOS sensor, Dual DIGIC 4 processors, ISO range expandable to 12800, continuous shooting at 8 fps and full HD video recording. It also incorporates a new viewfinder with 1.0x magnification and 100% coverage and a 3 inch LCD with 920k dot resolution.

Canon EF-S 15-85 & 18-135
Along with the EOS 7D, Canon has announced two EF-S, APS-C lenses. The EF-S 15-85mm F3.5-5.6 IS USM is as a high quality standard zoom designed to complement the EOS 7D. It offers a flexible 24-136mm (35mm equivalent) range and offers image stabilizer with a claimed effectiveness of 4 stops. It also includes ring-type USM and a close focus distance of 0.35m through the entire zoom range. Also bolstering Canon's EF-S range is the 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 IS USM, which covers a 29-216mm (35mm equivalent) range and with a claimed 4-stop image stabilizer and a minimum focus distance of 0.45m.

EF 100 f/2.8L Macro
Hot on the heels of Canon's announcement of its Hybrid IS technology comes the first lens to sport this feature and, to no great surprise, it's a 100mm F2.8 macro. The Hybrid IS system is claimed to provide up to 2 stops stabilization at 1.0x magnification, and up to 4 stops at longer shooting distances. This, Canon's third-generation EF 100mm F2.8 macro lens, is also the first to gain the flagship ‘L' designation and comes with such goodies as ultra-low dispersion glass elements, a nine blade circular aperture and weathersealing. The Canon EF 100mm F2.8L IS USM macro will supplement, rather than supplant the existing 100mm F2.8 USM macro.

cr

When will the macro be available?
so no one can be first :P
so sweeeet!
But where my 24-70IS
or 3D;)
Sigh. Looks like I’m renting a second body for the mid-Sept. wedding. At least that gives me a more objective outlook on whether to upgrade my Rebel 350D (4 years old) to this. Oh, and first 5 replies, for insomniacs, yay!
That crappy 17-85 gets an update AT LAST!
late September 2009 (source: Rob Galbraith)
we need
24-70 II
70-200 2.8 IS II
100-400 IS II
I want a 7D and the macro lens!
I see neither a price nor release date.
Anything about the 2000D?
Amazon has the body only for $1699.99 and the body+28-135 lens for $1899.99.
US dollars.
Not everyone else is in your timezone ;)
This will be an excellent upgrade from a 350D. Amusingly one of the 7D’s smaller JPEG options has the same pixel dimensions as the 350D.
I’m just kinda sad we didn’t get more lenses.
I was hoping for a 24-70 2.8 IS, and a new 35 1.4
Hoping for some news on a 5D Mark II firmware update soon otherwise it’s a down/upgrade to the 7D for me.
Any Canadian price so far ? I’ve been told about $2100, any confirmation ?
We have the following information for Canada so far:
* Canon EOS 7D: CDN$2099.99 (suggested retail price)
* Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L IS: late September 2009, CDN$1299 (suggested retail price)
* Canon EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS: CDN$999.99 (suggested retail price)
* Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS: CDN$599.99 (suggested retail price)
Too bad they going to increase those MP’s, instead to focus on the IQ.
It seems that we will never see a 12-15 MP FF from canon, or 10-12 MP APS-C with focus on high iso and IQ.
So this is just another camera made in the marketing departament… In two years we will see 60MP FF and 30 APS-C, and i will have great A4 prints from them!!!
and the british price £1699.99, how do we get ripped off everytime
The 15-85 is $799 pre-order at Amazon
you get 3 lenses at once and you want more? patience and moderation, please
somebody’s gonna be running off with my paycheck …
but boy am I happy about it. woot for the 7D
Whilst I completely agree we get ripped off, the 5D Mark II was listed at £2700 and I managed to get mine for £1800. It will come down but still, nothing on the US price, which will obviously do the same, but in dollars.
I just bought a 5d MK2 for video. Canon had really better issue a firmware upgrade or at least let is know if it isn’t possible.
Some communication would be greatly appreciated
If you look closely, the Direct Print button became a RAW/JPEG button. This is surely quite a breakthrough for Canon.
look on Canon USA site for price, 1700 7D
How can Canon call that weather sealing? They missed the shutter button, jog wheel, lens opening, and entire view-finder/hot shoe area!
Are they crazy at Canon…?
They ask €1700,- in Europe and $1699 in US
According to my sources.. 1699 US Dollars = 1190.44 Euros !!
Thats warehouse express preorder price I presume?
Its always minimum 10% higher than street price.
The preorder for the 5D II was, from memory £2299 or maybe a bit more body only.
come to Hong Kong, :)
Have you looked at any of the sample images?
Grey imports ahoy!
i think im just going to wait for it to drop in price abit, pennies are scarce these days, although i can get it for £1529.99 from jessops staff discount
lol they’re not the lenses I want !!!
yes..
I’ve looked at dpreview, imaging resource, rob galbraith
It’s better than 50D, but it could be much better with bigger pixel pitches, and only 12 MP for example…
http://a.img-dpreview.com/previews/CanonEOS7D/Images/whatsnew_sealing.jpg
why do you think the lines at American camera shops like B/H and the rest are full of Europeans? The taxes in Europe force the companies to make higher prices…
firmware for what? the video features?
IMO I don’t think that’s necessary. The 5D2 will still have better video quality because of the sensor and the high ISO. You can always do 24p in post prod. the only thing that would be missing is the 60FPS.
It’s a very good business, and particularly in Europe.
For the price difference, one can get a flight ticket to New York and have a lunch. Let’s go shopping at 6000km?
No way, I already bought a 50d, it’s amazing to put on a market every year camera that cost more than 1000 euros. It represent some money.
Yea, soft, noisy and full of lens aberrations, as physics predicted. I will wait for the full frame version of this camera.
everything is more expensive in europe
I too have a Rebel 350D… 6 months earlier I was planning on upgrading to the 50D and something told me to wait. This has been a long waiting for me and I’m definitely going to upgrade to the 7D. All the specs for the 7D gives me all the reasons to….!
The cam’s are all manufactured in the APAC region..
What is the actual VAT % in the US?
(In the Netherlands is currently 19%)
I think you’re right. Canon seems to push and push it, with no regard for the noise. Well, at base ISO you get good results. Maybe that’s their strategy, to reach out for the people that are focused on stock photography, as those sites tend to ask as well for more and more mp…
Nikon seems to have a focus on both markets, the low noise available light shooter and journalist and offering a second high res option. But as always in Nikonland you have to wait for the goodies…
I wonder which road Sony will take in the future. At least right now, their bodies are dirt cheap.
Maybe time to switch? But which brand will it be???
yeah I know. but €500,- difference is outrageous
(it’s about 1/3 of the total price)
I suspect will it go down soon, this is just introduction price..
Out goes the Eos 350 (Rebel XT) and in comes the.. 7D or 5DmkII. Still unsure. Will wait for the first extensive tests. So, if I got it right you’d be able to put your 430 ex II off the 7D and it will wiresly flash without use of for instance a cactus trigger?
I was hoping for the 2000D to be introduced. Oh well, I guess ill go get the 500D.
Yeah, I know. The green isn’t weather sealing though. It’s strengthened seams for reinforcement. Compare the red portions of that schematic to the
Pentax k7: http://pentaxlife.com/files/2006/10/pentax-k10d-weather-sealing.jpg
Or Nikon D300: http://images.suite101.com/1012317_com_d300s_seal.jpg
24p of course, sure we’ll get it ! 5D2 user :)
exactly my point, we pay waaay more compared with the US :( sucks to live in europe sometimes
I don’t know what you saw but the only ISO 800 on dpreview look very good
there are also some at 1600, 3200, and even 12800…
Introduction price in Europe (Belgium and the Nederland’s):
1 727.55 Euros = 2 479.20 U.S. dollars @ fotokonijnenberg
:-(
Same here. I already starting to hate 350D as it very very old and lacks a lot of today’s features.
same here. hahhaa i guess were the ‘almost-upgrade-to-50D’ family :D
whats the price for the 7D btw?
no LED or OLED… !!!
This looks like a solid camera. The noise looks better to me than 50-40D. No banding seen so far! That is huge in my book. I like the resolution for Landscapes, and would be disappointed with only 12MP. The AF looks decent too. I can’t afford/justify the 1 series, but this fits into my budget nicely.
At last canon has a IMPROVED af system for the non 1D bodies.
Tell me how the sensor creates lens aberrations please.
Having ISO better than the 50D is a win in my book. As the 50D’s high ISO ability is pretty darn good.
Sample images: http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/E7D/E7DA7.HTM
Thank God i haven’t preordered it. Not fullframe, just only crappy aps-c with too much noise even at iso 800.
You bought the 5D knowing that 24p wasn’t available. That’s your own fault if you “needed” it. It’s not Canon’s duty to update every camera everytime a new feature gets released.
As a film producer I’m stoked. This has everything we need for a great price- the image of the 5DII and the features of the GH1. I know, some photog fanbois are gonna thrash that statement, and it may not be true for photography, but for video and the downscaling of the image it will be right on. 1.6 vs FF means very little to us in the motion picture crowd. My company has several Canon hdv cameras right now (xha1, xlh1, hv30) and love the quality- and I’ve shot on just about every camera out there in the last five years. Personally I could care less who makes the cameras we use though (panny, sony, nikon, etc)- what matters are quality and features.
In a perfect world, the one thing this dslr is missing in the new hybrid HD game (and all the dslrs are missing for that matter), is a headphone jack to monitor the incoming audio. This is a pain in the @$$ for all of us. But as soon as these dslrs have this feature many, many filmmakers will jump ship from traditional camcorders and scrap their dof adapters, so that may be the reason we don’t see this added yet. Planned obsolescence.
Either way, we ordered two 7Ds last night from Amazon.
I have just tested the 7D, and seriously… it still lose to my 5D Mark II
1699 per Canon USA site
Yay all the 350D users who want to upgrade to 7D! The AF and metering are really starting to get on my nerves these days, and the peeling of the grip coating reminds me everyday how old the camera is.
I was thinking maybe the M size could be a bit bigger than 8mp. Oh well.
Agreed. I know many people were not that excited to see this lens rumored and now announced, but it works great for the work I do.
Meh. It was the LV button on the 5D2 as well. Still retains Direct Print functionality in Playback mode.
in what way does it lose to 5dmkll? please elaborate
How are you getting ripped off?
You had me at “improved AF system”!
So can we pay your salaries equivalent to US salaries, converted in euros ?
Because they know higher MP sells. Now they can boast the fastest apc-c with highest resolution. this is exactly what I expected and they proved it again that their marketing dept have high degree of control
US$ 1,699, per my Amazon pre-order! ;-)
did it lose in the speed and video test too? how many fps is the 5d Mii again? yeah….
Well, almost.
They forgot to add 5 to 9 shot AEB.
That’s funny, they had me at multi-function direct print button. It now can select between raw and jpeg. I hope I don’t get confused when trying to direct print…..
image quality, noise, and so on…
Ugh — Where’s my 2000D announcement? Weak sauce.
Body available (pre-order) at Henry’s for $2099.99
http://www.henrys.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ItemsDisplay?storeId=10001&catalogId=10001&departmentId=10404&categoryId=10429&itemID=265701
lens kits for $2599.99 and $2899.99
£1699 is $2700, yeah, kinda a ripoff
Is this the follower of the 50D or will there be a 60D sometimes? And what will it be like? Any rumors, any ideas?
Tax is added at purchase time in the US, and varies from state to state; VAT is NOT included in the retail price. So you can add 5-11% to that price for most US buyers. You don’t have to pay tax if you order from a store based outside your own state, which is why mail-order can sometimes work out cheaper even after shipping charges.
Add me to the list of people with a 350D that will be replaced with a 7D. It is still working like a champ though I have definitely out grown the body.
If it were as good as the 5d mii, they would never sell a 5d mii again. There is a reason it costs more…. Apples and oranges. Although the image quality may be better on the 5d mii, I does not make it a better camera for shooting sports and wild life, etc…
DP Review hands-on
http://www.dpreview.com/previews/canoneos7d/
Thus starts the 70-200 2.8L IS II rumours and the 1DIV rumours too.
I’m planning to get 7D with premium 70-200L f/4.
Is it worth getting such lens?
I mean if there some other lens (maybe different focal and not L) that will lead to same results as L?
I prefer to invest in good camera plus very good lens.
Or in comparison, what is better:
5DII + NON L (for example 75-300 IS USM f/3.5-f/5.6)
or
7D + 70-200L f/4
(lets pretend shots made with f/4 and at 200 in both cases)
Thanks.
But isn’t it suppose to lose to the 5D Mark II? After all, it is still almost a $1000 less. The question is, is the losing margin worth $1000… or maybe only $100 (in which case the 7D will rock!!!)
haha that is painful, I know
because you have one already? I’m sure real Canon testers are trolling these forums
they had me at …
WEATHERSEALING!
there is no more rumors for 60d
There is no VAT in the US.
I’m still interested in seeing what Canon does for the 60D. if it’s a lower megapixel count than the 7D, it would be intriguing to see if their improved sensor technology makes a big impact at say, a 12 MP level. but that’s more out of scientific curiosity than anything else
Having looked at the pictures samples, I have to say this camera is beautiful. I hope that Canon will not charge us too much to rip us off. I like it.
See some samples yourself:
http://www.canon.com.cn/products/camera/eos/7d/sample.html
12MP full frame? buy an old 5D and STFU
I’m disappointed Canon didn’t release a ~30mm EF-S prime lens with an affordable price tag. It seems the focus is all on the top end users and prices. Canon should realise that there are a huge number of people with 400D cameras that don’t want to spend $1,000+ on lenses or new camera bodies but are still looking to buy lenses and accessories that will improve their user experience.
from what I read on rob galbraith’s preview… the AF doesn’t seem that hot.
http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/multi_page.asp?cid=7-10042-10239
i dont mean its not worth it because it is, but i dont enjoy spending an extra £500 to other people.
Seems unlikely they’ll leave the $1000 price point to languish. I think we can expect a 60D soon.
seeing that canon is insane and keeps bumping up the pixels on their camera’s. The 1ds may blow our minds.
I’m very, very disappointed by his findings. The high ISO performance looks awful as well.
found it, $2099 Canadian dollars… that sucks, it shouldn’t be more than $1899 CDN with the exchange rate at 0.91-0.92. Canon is pretty hard on Canadian retailer that are loosing sale against US.
amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Canon-100mm-2-8L-Macro-Digital/dp/B002NEGTSI) already have preorder for Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM and the price is $1050. Holy cow……
Agreed. Nikon made a smart move with their 30mm DX lens. I’m sure the Sigmas is nice, but a more affordable Canon at f/1.8 would have been a huge seller like the Nikon is.
because i am not a sports, wild life shooter :)
As pixels gets smaller, aberration appears at a smaller aperture number (related to light diffraction). So yeah, in a way, sensor is related to ‘lens aberation’.
we need more:
35 1.8 USM
50 1.4 USM II
agreed on the 60D – it should be priced in between the 7d and the xti and have most of the features. 7d looks great but is priced too high for prosumer
Then get the Nikon D300s or the Sony A700 or A550.
RG is not the final authority on this matter and to the extent he finely scrutinizes Canon, he DOES NOT do the same to Nikon. RG has a serious credibility problem.
Rob was testing a beta unit. Wait for a production unit to be tested before deciding it sucks. Even if it isn’t perfect, I really like it and will be upgrading sooner or later.
maybe its because he know that canon is playing catchup with 7D? its pretty clear to everyone else too i guess
hi,
i will in December, but what about the warranty when you live in Europe?
Don’t tell me what to do, I can make up my mind fine on my own thanks. I have just as much right to express my opinion here as anyone else.
RG finely scrutinizes canon because he makes his living using their products – unlike the vast majority of people who post on these blogs.
1600 looks good, and 3200 looks respectable for the super cramped sensor, but yeah, 12k looks icky
it is not weather sealed : “Canon claims the same degree of moisture and dust resilience as the EOS-1N pro-level film SLR from the 1990s” (dixit DPreview).
The EOS-1n was not really sealed, as opposed to the EOS-1v. Canon certainly wanted to take advantage of the confusion.
Anyway, is that supposed to be a smart marketing gimmick? “Look at that! We offer you the technology from the 90s!”
Don’t tell me what to do, I can make up my mind fine on my own thanks. I have just as much right to express my opinion here as anyone else.
RG finely scrutinizes canon because he makes his living using their products – unlike the vast majority of people who post on these blogs.
I have the 100 2.8 Macro and the 135 L. Use the macro for macro things and the 135 for that longer reach and fast AF.
Any chance this new 100mm Macro L will be close to the sharpness as the 135? I’m sure the AF speed will not be but I am willing to sell these two lenses if it is a good compromise.
Very excited about all the new gear!
RG was having problems with the 85 f/1.2L II and 200 f/2L in a particular Zone AF mode in low light. These lenses have a very thin DoF and learning how to use them best is difficult. RG is not authoritative in this matter. What he can criticize Canon is that the AF is sensitive to -1/2 EV, unlike the Nikon D300s which sensitive to -1 EV. Canon also decided to not let the AF work with f/8 lenses and only upto f/5.6. Both of these issues are cynical design choices by Canon in order to keep the 7D from poaching 1DMkIV sales.
I don’t believe that’s actually the case. Diffraction limits resolution but increase pixel density does not “create” aberrations. What it does do is make aberrations wider on a per pixel basis. However, relatively they are not worse than they are on a lower pixel density sensor.
And who are you exactly?
I think you can keep your suggestions, I wasn’t asking for them.
I may still purchase the 7D, but it seems that I may have to wait and see what the 1D4 is going to look like.
I do agree. Considering the update of the 100mm macro, one can forget the idea of affordable lenses such as a new version of the 50mm 1.4 for instance, on the same price tag and weight.
I’m not good enough for pretending to plainly use a lens like the 50mm 1.2 that cost 1600$.
For sure, disposing of such a lens should be great, but one should expect when buying an eos body, to find prime lens at reasonable price released in the 5 to 10 last years.
It seems that the middle lens class is not really updated, EF 20-24-28 2.8, EF 35/2, EF 50 1.4. Instead of making an upgrade of the 100mm Macro, they propose a L version, it’s rather different.
I fell a bit angry about my new 50d which is only 3 months old. Buying such a camera in thinking it will already be upgraded with a new model, it’s really short and frustrating. One can forget upgrades for the current model.
let’s see what happen in the two next years, and what the competitors propose.
If there is no way to get new EF lens release for less than 500 euros, I give up with canon.
:-)
Give me time to sell my 50D first!
I am not sure about this :
how sharper can you focus with an f/2.8 cross-type AF point, versus an crosstype f/5.6 point?
Does the f-numbers induce different level of AF precision ?
Check the MTF charts at Canon.com. I’ve always been impressed with the sharpness of my 100mm f/2.8 Macro but the new IS macro looks like it could be one amazing lens. Can’t wait to test them side-by-side.
you and me both! I will check out the charts…
The Sigma 30mm EF-s 1.4 is superb. But not for a 400D. AF can’t keep up by far. That’s why I’m looking for a new camera. But with a price tag of 1740 euro in The Netherlands for a camera that goes for 1699 USD in the States I’ll stick to my 400D. The price difference is insane.
A higher aperture number for AF ability has to do with how much light is needed for AF lock. The 1D series can lock with f/8 lenses. So, you could use a 2x teleconverter with an f/4 lens and achieve a lock. With the 7D you can’t do this. Its important for wildlife photographers, most everyone else won’t notice the difference.
Go read page 2 of RG’s report on the 7D, then see the specifications of the 7D and D300.
Again canon marketing evil shows its colors
Lets not worry if RG is the final authority about this. lets see any from canon camp prove him wrong. I dont care if he is not doing this to sony or nikon. But let somebody prove him wrong
Lol…..so obvious that canon is trying to catch up. D300 is a pro-body with all the features from highend FF version. But even after 2 years, canon does not want to bring pro features to crop body.
it is not smart, but it works..!! see how people immediately buy that story..!! so now D300 is weathersealed and 7D too(according to canon)
There’s going to be a lot of bickering as to whether this is better than the mk2.
They don’t compare if full frame is important to you. If all you shoot is telephoto outdoor shots or moving subjects, get the 7D. If you want better wide angled shots, potentially (too early to tell) cleaner shots, and more shallow DoF at comparably framed un-cropped images, get the mk2.
There’s no need to troll this, they’re aimed at different shooters. I just got my mk2 too – sure, it’s frustrating that this thing has WAY cooler features, but at the end of the day, it’s still a crop. Plus, this is a preview of the 5dmk3! How could they improve the mk2 other than adding better AF, flash commander, leveling, and better video controls? That’d be a great replacement for the mk3.
Hang in there, mk2’ers. In about a year, the day…will…be… ours….
:)
so, do you convert your salaries to dollars and match up with what is paid in US for the same job?
should we even talk about health insurance in US or the social assistance people get from govt. in europe ?
Haha … I didn’t realize there were so may 350D people thinking of upgrading to this. I thought that I was one of the last people to even HAVE a 350D still. And yeah, I was going to go for the 50D about 3 weeks ago, then realized that it came out in August of last year and started to search for rumor sites of a possible 60D … found this site and now we’ve got the 7D.
I agree on the 24-70 f/2.8 IS (or make the 24-105 L IS into an f/2.8).
I did take a bunch of pictures today hand holding the 24-70 f/2.8 in bright sunlight with no problem however.
+1
Yay here, another 350D owner upgrading to the 7D!! The 400D, 450D, 500D were all “meh” for me, as was the 40D & 50D. I have a 30D as well, almost sold both for a 5D Classic.
You might like to explain the relevance to consumer product pricing.
Oh I see, silly me jumping to conclusions there.
That’s fine, you’d expect it to “lose” (if indeed you can compare them in enough aspects to draw a meaningful conclusion) considering it’s cheaper.
I’ve also got a 350D, almost bought a 50D but the 7D’s got so many handy features that I might end up with one.
“You can always do 24p in post prod.”
Technically you can do many things that you really shouldn’t. Going from 30p to 24p is going to look horrible no matter how you do it.
The EOS 7D’s camera seals are built to resist water and dust but therefore the kis lenses should also be in that quality.
+1 Amen brotha.
Hello 7D you had me at your upgraded AF system!1 Plus your Pi Sheti for JPEG Anger Quality of Photometry. ;P
Maybe when unprocessed _some_ shots with ISO equal or greater than to 1600 are usable, but none of them will be really suitable for post-processing. The noise is just too much for me.
Gasp. How do we request high quality optics from Great Red Father? I have a Nice SIGMA 18 to 200 3.5-5.6 that I want CANON TO MAKE AS an 18 – 200 2.8 L IS lens? Sigma can do Nice, is Canon afraid it will be a category Killer? Sigma, are you up to challenge of getting some anti-flair technology? Think we will buy it?
The Canon lens line is disjointed from an APS-C side. Ignores the wides.
Many people have alos become fans of Paul Smith Shoes since they came into the market. I also one of them , I very like Paul Smith Wallets and <a Paul Smith Belts,It designs very good.
