Canon Announces the RF 16-28mm F2.8 IS STM

This looks like a very nice lens. light, portable, small, sharp, bright f2.8....what's not to love? I'm sure fter about a year the RRP / street price will drop to a more realistic price.

doesn't surprise me. the R8 plus the two lenses is a very good travel kit for under 1400g.

That was one of my first thoughts as well. But after thinking about it a bit more, I don't expect it to be a good lens for astro. Canon has been pretty heavy handed with digital corrections lately and that will hurt astro performance especially. Also historically their wide angle lenses haven't been well corrected for coma.

But I'd be happy to be proven wrong

Not really. Before switching here, I read it in an email from fotokoch.de, a German retailer, who even offers this lens for a slightly reduced price together with the 2.8/28-70.

I was shocked that I hadn't read about it here yet ;-)

The ones I work with didn't get details until after the close of business yesterday, which was a first for them.

Surprises are reat though, the "pro" stuff can't be kept underwraps just by the testing requirements.

Collapsible design is the main caveat, it's just annoying to use. Cameras should be ready to shoot as quicky as possible.

Interesting release and a good companion lens to the RF 28-70 mm f2.8 IS STM lens. The pair make a good travel kit especially if one needs the UWA zoom capability. Frankly, I rarely use the RF 15-35 mm f2.8 L or RF 14-35 mm f4 L, and maybe some day in the future I would replace both of these lenses with these two due to their lighter weight. No rush on my end and will wait for discounts etc.

It has the same retracting design as the 2.8/28-70. Both share a very similar design.

It's the usual 10+% mark up in the UK compared with the Euro by Canon EU. In a few months it will be probably 20% cheaper here via the usual very reliable grey market companies.

You guys wrote an article about a lens being released this year that might "cannibalize" another lens. Do you know if this is that lens? To me it seems similar in price and scope to the 14-35mm F4L

While I have not seen any sort of announcement, it almost seems like Canon is going to bring us a new tier of lenses. Somewhat similar to the EFs 17-55 and EFs 15-85 from years ago. Sub-L but much better than other consumer lenses. Excellent optical quality (based on reviews of the 28-70 f/2.8 and MTFs here).

Personally, I am excited to see if they have more in the pipeline. Just thinking about it, we have at least three zoom lenses in this group, the 16-28 f/2.8, 28-70 f/2.8, and while not a constant aperture lens, many hold the 100-400 in high regard, it seems to fit as well. Those three would make a great kit and cover a lot of ground for people.

I'm thinking that given their MO on these two lenses, that something like a 70-180mm F2.8, or a 70-150mm F2.8 would be a distinct possibility to complete the trinity.

It even has an extra zoom for you! It's a collapsible lens, so you have to extend it before use.

Very interesting, but the price bites a bit for a non-L lens. But it's f/2.8... I wonder if it works well for Astro and how much software corrections it requires.

I think Canon very much wants to only release L-series lenses above $2,000 US from now on. Having a prosumer line in the $1100, 1400 etc range seems to be their plan. I'm fully expecting to see a $4,000 L-series lens within the next few years.
