Canon EOS R5 Mark II: Firwmare v1.1.1 Release

You can simply leave it on all the time and if you use back button focus you can choose to half press the shutter when you want it on and not half press when you want it off
The same but maybe clearer to some: use half press to engage, or go straight to full press to bypass.

I just updated the firmware to version 1.1.1.
I removed the battery and reinserted it. Firmware update was successful.
Switched on the camera. Then I clicked the third tab in the camera's Orange Menu. There I clicked on ES Continuous Shooting Speed. With High Speed Continuous + and High Speed, I can no longer adjust the number of shots. I can with Low Speed. I see the arrows, but I can't change the number of shots. The Shutter Mode is Electronic.
What's wrong here?
Does anyone have firmware version 1.1.1 installed and can check for me if they have the same limitation regarding the number of shots they can select for High Speed Continuous + and High Speed? These are set to 30 and 15 by default and cannot be adjusted. I'd like to know if this is a firmware issue or a setting related. To be clear: I have this limitation even though I'm using Electronic Shutter mode.
Thanks!

It is 30, then 20, 15, 12, 10 ... it picks up wherever you set the High Speed. The values you can set these to look unchanged from previous firmware versions to me.
Thanks for the reply.
Somehow I can't. Regardless the drive mode and/or shuttermode (= Electronic). The arrows next to the valuefield to set those values are greyed out. So if you can, it must be something with another setting. :(
I really hope to hear what other setting may of influence.

I did a complete camera reset.
Since I did not save camera settings before loading the firmware I had to go through all the menu settings again. About 15 minutes.
But I can now set the values for High Speed Continuous + and High Speed. So it's 'fixed'
I still wonder what happened here. Because I could not find a setting the prevents setting the values other than shuttermode (maybe drive mode)

So I recommend:
1. Save your camera settings before loading the new firmware
2. Make sure you do not format the card to delete the firmware file after the update. You may delete de settings file ;)

Good for you that you are able to set the frame rate again.

When I save my camera settings on the CF express card, I make a copy of the settings file to my pc and put the date in file name. Same for other settings e.g. eye-controlled AF.

I was able to set custom numbers.

What a weird bug.

Has the focus issue many were having fixed now, or is that still an issue? Just curious, I haven't been playing with my camera enough to see if I have the actual issue or not, unfortunately. I know a lot of people were using a workaround by turning powersaving settings off.

I just haven't seen any talk about it, so I was very curious. Feel like people may have mentioned it not being fixed by the firmware if it was still an issue, or maybe they're just content with the workaround.

Same, it's a shame Canon does not publish release notes where they also update on known major issues like e.g. GPU drivers do...

I haven't conducted tests to verify this, but also before I don't think I had this issue, since I was not on the version that caused allegedly the problems with focus

Yeah, I was figuring at least mentioning the issue, since it seemed to be a major one that was causing them to miss quite a few shots. That, along with the battery issue seemed like two mains ones and I haven't heard anything updates for a long time. Maybe they're in another thread I haven't seen yet. I just figured a major firmware update would have some talk about it!

Hopefully we hear more soon about the issue being resolved or unresolved. It's been incredibly hot here and I still haven't gotten out with my camera in a long time. If I do and find issues, I'll definitely open a discussion. So far my biggest, known issue with the camera is my being lazy and not using it enough! ☹️

I'll get back to it soon. Really miss my little insects and lovely spots!

Canon had stopped to use the word "phenomenon" in their firmware update release notes and replacing with "fixes an issue". Semantics maybe but still interesting for me :)

I just (literally) got this e-mail from Canon UK:

"We’ve released a new firmware update to meet the latest EU Security Directive RED 18031. This update enhances your device’s security, protects your data, and ensures continued compliance with EU regulations.

Please be aware this optional firmware update provides additional security features depending on your model.

Head to our support pages for full details, the firmware download link and all the frequently asked questions to help you. Simply use the links for your products below."

P.S. The link in which just takes me to the Canon firmware page where 1.1.1 is the latest version (I'm already running it BTW, the Fence and Net AF stuff seems good). There's also a link to the R5 firmware page where 2.2.0 is the latest, although I've never owned a ml 1.

I'm sure this is why you have to give a Password for the Radio links (WiFi, Bluetooth) on first power-up after the update (although I immediately disabled its use).

I had seen no mention of this EU directive prior to the e-mail...

I saw your comment and tried my camera. I could change High and Low but not High+. After playing around with all three, I discovered that High+ cannot be equal to or lower than High, so if High is set to 20, High plus cannot be changed. If High is moved to 15, High+ can drop to 20. Same rule applies up and down across all three. For this reason, the lowest High+ can drop to is 3, provided High is at 2 and Low is 1. Hope this clarifies the issue and there is no bug.

There are so many problems with the latest firmware for the R5 MK II... ;-(

For this reason, as well as its only 45 MP sensor and the abandonment of the analog viewfinder, I'm so glad I didn't buy it!!

Yesterday I received an email regarding my 5D MK IV announcing the release of firmware 1.5.0, and guess what it brings to my camera?

Absolutely nothing... quite the opposite, it removes network features ;-( It imposes a European standard on me that removes features, even though I don't live in the EU.

Firmware version 1.5.0 includes the following fix:
1. This update ensures compliance with the European RED EN18031 standard by removing certain network functions.
Affected features:
Image upload: Sending images to image.canon will be Disabled.
FTP transfer and live streaming: These features will no longer be available after the update.

And what about the people who bought this device to benefit from these features ?! It seems like they couldn't care less, especially since after updating, there's not possible to going back.

Firmware 1.1.1. works perfectly on my 2 R5 II cameras. No more reason for not buying them.
And I can guarantee you, as an 5D IV owner, the "only" (?) 45MP are only one reason why my 5D is now collecting dust.
I simply don't see any single reason why I'd keep using it, even though, for a long time, I persistently rejected the R series. (EVF, battery life etc...).
My EOS R wasn't very convincing, though extremely reliable. I bought it in order to adapt Leica R lenses.
And then, I tested an R5, but waited for the R5 II, with its eye-controlled AF, which works pretty well for me (no glasses).
;)

Thanks for checking that...but.....I could not change neither of them at all. Not accessible. Greyed-out values were: High+ 30, High 15.

“Ordinary Filmmaker” on Youtube, who appears to have been one of the earliest to report the focus issue on v1.03 has tested v1.1.1 and is happy. I’ve had other confirmations as well. I’m going out tomorrow to try for myself.
