Will Canon make a full size mirrorless crop camera?

Let’s assume that Canon releases the mirrorless FF camera within the next year, and it will be something like a mirrorless 5D or 6D-series. Will they do a crop sensor version as well? Something like a mirrorless 7D? The M5 and M50 are nice, but they really are too small for my liking, especially with larger lenses. Will it matter if they stick with the EF/EF-S mount for the FF or not? If they do, there will be three crop camera lens alternatives. What do you think?

I think that eventually the rebel lineup will be all mirrorless

What would be the advantage of a mirrorless 7D sized camera ? Given that's it's unlikely that there would then be a significant saving in weight ! If you gave me the choice between similar sized 7D camera's with optical or electronic viewfinder, i'd take optical every time.

One advantage could be potentially higher fps.

So, a larger sized M5? Is that what you might be referring to?

One thing I really like about my M5 is that even though I have large hands and love the 5D series layout and joystick, the M5 works very well for me, unlike the Olympus Pen F which has questionable ergonomics and a tiny M43 sensor. So when you say crop......

And other folks would choose the EVF every time. As has been discussed ad nauseum, the advantages and disadvantages of mirrorless vs DSLR go way beyond size (and to some the size is not even an issue at all). DSLRs offer better AF, better battery usage (and for birders and wildlife photogs, OVF is almost a necessity as they may look through the viewfinder for hours at a time), and real time viewfinder. Mirrorless advantages include WYSIWIG in viewfinder, higher FPS, and wider focus point spread.

Why would anyone want to have a mirrorless version of a camera whose only advantage is that it flaps a mirror fast?

Just make it full-frame if you don't need a lighter mirror anymore.

Higher FPS, and wider focus point spread could be advantageous depending on your needs (not me as a landscape photographer), as could WYSIWIG if you shoot JPEG. It's of limited use for those of us who shoot RAW however, unless you've achieved the holly grail of being able to 100% colour match your imported RAW's to the images that's being displayed on the EVF. Mine always require a tweak or two even when using DPP.

For many the fact that a 7D like mirrorless would be crop frame would be a major advantage , not all forms of photography are better suited to FF.

I think the TO´s question is good and it isn`t that easy to answer.
For me it´s definitely not a ff vs. crop thing.
I would like to have two digital cams in my bag (instead of one because, yes, size matters):

one ff dslr for best quality and because of the " good feeling" when working with solid instruments etc.
one crop mirrorless in high outside quality (much better than M5, analogue to 7D) because of the weight/size/weather sealing

One body for delightful work and one body for easy travel. Not the other way round! >:(

For example an EOS 5D Mark V (flippy/tilt screen) and an upcoming M7 (flippy/tilt screen/mirrorless/small).

Both will have a high compatible EF-(or EF-M) mount. I really would love Canon for doing that. ;)

As Neuro has said here many times, the primary advantage of APS-C versus FF is can be a lot cheaper. Cost is often the primary driver of people's choices.

That's why i'm not expecting a FF or high end crop Canon mirrorless camera to be much, if anything cheaper than the 5D Mk IV or 6D II. If they are it could knock the sales of those camera for six, the FF version will be prices similarly to the Sony A7R III IMO.

I want both. What I don't want is to use large lenses on a small camera. I really can't see the fascination with small cameras. When using fast, heavy lenses, small camera bodies are frustrating and impractical.
So, why mirrorless at all? I wan't the EVF and the practicality of seeing depth of field that comes with it. I want the higher fps that mirrorless usually achieves. If that can be even higher on a crop sensor, it's another reason for having a crop sensor body as well.

Because the overwhelming majority of camera users does not use large lenses at all or at least not all the time. :-)

I use big heavy lenses only very occasionally. And then typically on a tripod. Small camera no issue, big lenses usually have tripod ring/foot.

I hope they will come up with a dual VF system where you have the OVF enabled if the camera is switched of and you have optionally access to the EVF if needed. After using the M50 for 3 weeks there are some clear advantages of the EVC: Direct control of exposure even in bright situations, easy video with longer focal lengths, no eye-damage when taking early sunsets viewing in the bright sun, low noise, direct review ...
But the larger cameras have the advantage of better ergonomics (at least it is possible) and combine better with larger lenses. I think it shoudn't be too complex to use the current 7D design and cram an EVF into it for alternate / combined use.

At the end I changed my f/4 70-200 IS USM between the M50 and the 200D very often to exploit each systems advantages. I would like to avoid that in the future ... and I am shure we will an OVF-EVF system in DSLR land with in the next years (the "s" is important). Then a beafier camera makes a lot of sense.

are you aware that you don't see a clear image in the OVF of a 7D / II or any other current Canon mirrorslapper] *when the camera is switched off*? There is an LCD overlay that needs camera turned on / powered.

I hope so, but don't expect to see it any time soon.

For me it's not so much the overall size but all the controls on the right hand side the same size and most importantly spacing between them and a good battery grip. Those wishes of course also go for the FFs
