Hello, just in had a question for anybody with this gear.

i have the 7d ii and the 2xiii. i am selling my 70-300L to get the 100-400 II. I know the f/8 auto focus limit while using the viewfinder, but what about f/11 in liveview? looked online cant seem to find an answer, I did find this on The Digitial Picture for the 7D ii review:

"The 7D II's sensor-based AF includes benefits over conventional phase-detection AF. First, the AF coverage area encompasses a full 80% of the frame (measured horizontally and vertically) with no limit on a "number" of focus points to select from or include in auto AF. Second, no AF Micro Adjustment calibration is needed because the actual imaging sensor is being used for AF. And, AF can function with camera and lens combinations having an f/11 or wider aperture (vs. f/8 with the 7D II's conventional center AF point) – again, using 80% of the frame."

So if anyone does have any experience with this (does it work/reliability/speed if it does), I would love to hear about it. Also I did see the one thread about the 1.4 and liveview with the 6D, but if there is a thread already started for this subject, just let me know!

DPAF works fine and substantially better than the earlier crop cameras. The camera will hunt though, and limiting the AF distance and suitably pre-focusing behind the subject is desirable - high contrast situations will help.

But from what I can guess, you'll have to use a tripod for this. Shooting handheld with this combo is a PITA. Shooting handheld with LV at 800mm on a crop sensor, I used to have trouble keeping the subject within the frame... YMMV

Thank you for this great idea. Just tested it with the MkI 100-400mm. The Live view focusing works astonishing fast and accurate.

For Wildlife on a tripod in a shade - or photos like that: really a choice: it works just great.

But to the downsides: today it´s cloudy outside. f11 means: wide open: the photos come out pretty soft. f16 is by fare better - but than you are @ 1/20s exposure time.... which means it works with remote release only....
