$1200 1DX discounts on eBay... Anyone bought one?

The "discount" is significant, has anyone bought one of these US model Canon 1DX models from any of these folks selling them for $5850ish?

Without a doubt. But grey market whether that means anything to the buyer.

I agree that Buying from a authorized dealer is safer.
However, I've never heard of a fake Canon 1D X, and ebay guarantees your purchase, and so does your credit card company. Amex even extends the warranty by a year. Many of the eBay sellers have very high positive feedback over many thousands of sales. Buyers are not shy about leaving poor feedback, so they seem to be delivering.
Get It Digital claims that their cameras have a US warranty. They are not a Authorized Canon Dealer, Authorized dealers are required to show the Canon Authorized Dealer logo on their site.


$5650 currently on ebay.

I had a lengthy conversation today with GetItDigital... seem like legit guys, not trying to pull any fast ones... the $5650 Canon 1DX is not a US model, therefore does not have a US Warranty... however they do sell a 3 year warranty (3rd party) for an inexpensive price. They also will have a US model soon posted on eBay that's $650ish more than this grey market one... They do have a return policy... again, they're very open and honest about things....

I also called CPS (Platinum member...)... The guy basically said if it's a DSLR there is no difference between any of them any longer. If I was looking at some of the lower model Powershots then there might be a problem if it's a Japan model in particular... so if there was an issue with a current DSLR, they'd be able to do repairs.

Now... $1150 is A LOT of "warranty" repair and with the experience of three other 1DX bodies which have had ZERO issues (two of them with 19 months, one with 13 months on them... about $150k total exposures between all of them which is quite low for a 1 series...) I'm weighing the "risk" that's really there for that first year and what a US model is going to give me besides a larger CC bill and a warmer "peace of mind" for the first year...

I bought recently my 5D Mark III on eBay and it has no issue whatsoever. There are few sellers on eBay with very high reputation (customer review feedback) that normally offer items at a very good price, such as 6ave, bigvalueinc and getitdigital. Their feedback is not manipulated by eBay so, I think we can trust in their products quality.

In many cases posted on this forum, Canon has covered repairs under warrranty equipment not bought from authorized channels. That said, it is still a risk, but the difference in price is the value of self-insuring it.

I bought the 5D3 through BVI last year for 2500. It's been over a year, and any warranty on it has expired. It saved me a lot of money by effectively insuring it myself.

I purchased one yesterday from BigValueInc.

Quite a few of their negative feed back ratings are from people complaining about grey market/no USA warranty cards. I'd say its pretty well known (at least in this photography community) that heavily discounted items are grey market.

On the other hand, there are some legitimate complaints in their feedback (DoA, missing items, item not as described, etc).

All in all, I'm very excited to receive my package!

Well I pulled the trigger tonight... I'll keep you all posted how it goes. Paid $5600... bought the other three at $6800... That's a lot of other things assuming I'm not self insuring the camera!

I can buy a 1Dx every day here in Thailand for 5600 and that includes VAT. Which is refunded when i leave. So another 6% on top of that. Also the 5dIII is 26-2700 dollars. Everyday. So the price is valid. Grey market for you guys in the states. Those are Canon prices. Not sales. And not because of the exchange rate either.

After living here for a while I would have no problem buying this kind of item. I buy here all the time. New 1D mark IV after Vat refund. 3600 dollars.

No, everyday consumer electronics are more expensive. I wait until I am in America to buy pretty much anything else. But, Canon is not moving the cameras here at all. It is stale and they are cutting prices here to help sales. So only the 5DIII and 1Dx are being heavily discounted. Although I don't want either camera they are for the taking if I wanted one for that price.

just a quick update...

Had the camera for about two weeks, shot one NBA D-league game with it... there's a slight difference in the viewfinder with my 24-70 attached, I know that sounds weird but when I shoot with that lens I zoom it to 70mm and keep both eyes open and my brain somehow equalizes my eyes on my other three 1DX's... this one seems a bit more zoomed, which I cannot explain... but otherwise I can't tell the difference between the cameras....

The battery was of a touch of concern but an email with photos to Canon's anti-counterfeit group confirmed that the battery is Canon but was not intended to be sold in the US... I'm OK with that...

Saved myself $1200....

All of their cameras are being heavily discounted. Most likely because many of the lines are going to be replaced in the near future and they are clearing inventory.
