As the numbers game is so important in the entry-level market, Canon might have decided that they can just about crank 24mp out of their current tech, but won't overtake Sonikon like with the 5ds is their iq would be hit for six.
On the other hand, Canon could have followed the 5ds' announcement policy and done 28mp crop sensor - to be released in 2017 :->
The specs say Canon sensor. Not sure they can say that if it was Sony sensor. Also the Sony is 1.5 crop and Canon is 1.6. The difference in crop would change pixel count. Can't see them changing crop factor to 1.5. I believe if they were going to spend the money to buy a sensor it wouldn't go in the rebel line. I could be wrong but I don't see Canon buying Sony sensors anytime soon.
As noted, the math does not line up , Nikon APS-C sensors are larger than Canon APS-C sensors. Certainly, Canon could buy sensors from Sony, they have been using them in P&S along with Sony LCD's, maybe battery cells, as well as other parts. Japanese competitors often sell parts to each other, its very different from the USA.
Never said they can't buy them. I said I can't see them making changes from their current format to accommodate the sensor. Since the specs say it is Canon why in the world would you believe it is Sony?

As said elsewhere, Nikon has a different crop factor, albeit the 1.5 crop sensor could be used in a 1.6 crop camera with pixel loss around the edge. Canon has the scale of "sensor requiring" business behind it to be able to afford R&D on its sensor business, where as Nikon is a small brand of Mitsubishi thus will be competing for R&D from the parent against much more diverse range of markets, notably cars, aircraft, space, banking etc... Canon's key competitor will be Sony, just as Apple competes with Samsung... I note that Apple has done just about everything to rid the iphone of Samsung sourced parts, go figure.
