550D vs 750D => increased sharpness / detail captured?

The new Rebel T6s (EOS 750D) has just appeared and it has a new 24 megapixel sensor. The older series all have the same 18 megapixel sensor.

Out of curiosity, I went to the store to do some test shots to see if there is a (big) difference in terms of sharpness and amount of detail captured between these two sensors.

I have two stacks: one with the Mitutoyo 5x NA 0.14 and one with the Rodenstock apo rodagon-D 75mm f/4.5 (at f/5.6, reverse mounted at ca. 1.5x magnification).

I have kept as much of the conditions the same as possible.

Feel free to download, have a look, compare and let me know your thoughts. Do you find the difference small, big or insignificant?

Thanks for sharing. I could not judge the details because the DOF is very shallow.

For this type of comparison, it is recommended shoot in a solid tripod, with the same lens using F8 aperture on both cameras, distance largest than 1 meter to get wider DOF.

I saw the studio samples in IMAGING RESOURCE but are only JPEG. According to these samples, both 750D and 760D also has more details than the old Canon 18 megapixel sensor. The advantage of sharpness is quite noticeable in the new sensor, but the noise is a slight improvement.

Detail and sharpness is always a combination of lens + sensor. Since I would purchase this body as a dedicated macro body for high magnifications (2 - 50x) only, I test with the optics that will be used with this sensor. :)

At higher magnifications, diffraction becomes more an issue and often the limited factor in sharpness. Therefore, a studio setup with some fancy stuff (e.g. pencils and colored fabrics) with a 50 mm at f/8 does not say anything about what will happen when you compare with a 10x microscope objective instead.
