Hello…,

In addition to the announcement of the Canon 5D MK III lately, I’m thinking about upgrading my camera body. Hence, I need your opinion whether or not my upgrading plan is worth of investment. I currently using 5D MK II and BG-E6 grip, and have overall satisfaction of using it, but since my nine year old son is joining a junior local soccer league, I need a high rate of continues shooting camera and good-fast AF system.

I am thinking about 5D MK III and 1D MK IV. I realized that the 1D MK IV has lack of AF point compare to 5D MK III (45 vs 61 points) but on the other hand 1D MK IV has higher continue shooting rates compare to 5D MK III (10 vs 6 fps) , full-frame vs APS-H, single new tech processor vs dual old tech processors. Moreover, with 5D MK III I am keep up with the latest technology (just my feeling…).

Once again, in determine me to choose which camera that will suit to my needs, which camera that you suggest I should go with?

Thank you.

I would choose the 1D4 for the fps and the weatherproofing

AF is not going to be an issue - the 1D4 is still top notch, and do you really want to be choosing the AF point in the middle of a fast game?

Generally speaking, DITTO! The 1D IV is an awesome camera.

I'd ask though, that you provide some more information about what you shoot. A high frame rate and cropped sensor have specific value for photographers who shoot distant action and need extra lens reach. If you don't need either, and would prefer the thinner DOF for any given framing that the 5D III's full-frame sensor offers, then obviously the 5D III would be a better camera for you.

I think the OP has given ups a good idea ;)

Dont think a shallow DOF would be needed - even on a 1d4 a f/5.6 will be about right at 200mm

I'd go with the 5D mk3 after a slight price drop, if the ISO performance of the 5D mk3 turns out to be as good as expected/announced. However, that's just my personal preference.

For you, APS-H would be useful for getting a bit of the "sweet spot" effect in lenses, as well as increase the effective range of tele lenses (long lenses, sports, myes). There's a big list of benefits to the 1D mk4. It's better sealed than the 5D mk3 (although that's better sealed than the mk2) and the burst rate is higher, as you mentioned. For video, the 5D mk3 probably beats the 1D4.
