5d3 Batteries

Hi guys,

I just went shopping for some of the lp-e6 batteries used in the 5d models, and I'm wondering if people have had good experiences with the off branded batteries. Canon batteries are abut 50-60 dollars and off brand are about 10-15 dollars.

my off brand batteries work just fine...just no readout in the camera as to how much battery life is left in the battery.
It just croaks...but at the lower price you can have plenty on hand to put in the camera when it does die!

SDHC/SDXC or CF for new 5D3?

Given that the new 5D Mark III accepts both CF and SDHC/SDXC cards, which type would you choose and why?

The SDxx tend to be cheaper but how about their longevity and performance when compared to CF?

IMHO, the off brand batteries can be a hazzard. They are made in China and not necessarily manufactured to the Japanese safety standards. New batteries made in Japan to the latest safety standards go thru some really tough tests to make sure they are safe and won't overheat or burn and explode.

In the end, its just a matter of the risk you are willing to accept, if they were commonly catching fire, we would know, but it does happen.

I still use my 3-1/2 year old LP-E6 Canon batteries that came with my 5D MK II in 2008. They hold about 60-70% charge, so I only get about 600-700 exposures on a battery. I have bought third psarty batteries in the past, they lasted 6 month and died. I also bought a used camera that had two third party batteries with it. One was dead, the other had overheated in the camera and I had to drill it and take it out in pieces.

When you consider the risk and overall cost over a 4 or 5 year period, the Canon batteries will cost less than 6 or 8 sets of junk ones.

If you are spending $3,500 on a camera, do not try and save on the batteries. also, you may not know this, but this has Canon's smarter batteries- they report how many shots, the level they are at and the condition of the charging.

Yes, I guess the problem is to figure out which are the junk ones. I have used third-party batteries for years without problems, and the ones I have even hold charge better than the Canon originals. But, I cannot recommend them because I don't know what brand they are :-\ Unfortunately there are no reputable off-brand battery brands (that I know of).
