I was taking two pictures with my 7D with 100mm 2.8 L Macro with the only difference the first being in RAW and the second in MRAW.

I was shocked to see the RAW with purple fringing on the wood and the MRAW without.

Is MRAW apart from resolution so much better with colors and fringing?

It isn't really a direct comparison. The RAW image is simply showing more detail because of the higher resolution. However, that amount of fringing is easily correctable with Lightroom, which will also help to give the appearance of a sharper image.
