Advice On 7D Purchase

For sure go and buy a 7D now. The 7D2 is just not in Canon's mind at the moment as they have enough to focus on, specifically the production of the 1Dx, C300 and announcement/development of 5D3, 1DC, 70D as well as another entry level DSLR.

As many have said, the 7D simply doesn't have "that" much to improve just yet. I'd guess that the 7D2 is a 2013 camera. Purchase the 7D and enjoy!

@Harley - Congrats on the 7D. I was in a similar boat with my T2i and have been weighing 7D vs 5DMKII for about 8 months and I have flip-flopped more than most politicians. The rumor and promise of new bodies also seriously made things difficult... but in the end I just bit on the 5D and even though in 9 months both the 7D and 5D MKII will likely have upgraded bodies, the 7D or 5DMKII will both be a substantial upgrade, and at worst, even if I sell and say walk out $300 or so less than what I paid in, that still winds up being a fairly cheap rental over say a year.

So if I find myself come next holiday season jonesing for a Black Friday or Cyber Monday sale on the new latest and greatest, it just means that perhaps I have paid $25 or $30 a month for a better body.

I am almost thinking of my 5DMKII purchase like a lease. I also got a great deal on mine, so think if I sell in a year, I might be looking at more like $20/month.

There will ALWAYS be a better camera on the horizon. At some point it makes sense to upgrade, realize that when you do finally make that decision, the camera you were waiting on will be announced a week later, but be happy in your decision.

Enjoy the purchase.

+1 on Shermanstank on the Battery Grip. I can't go back to a camera without one.

@Maui5150 (and Shermanstank): +1 and thanks! I may have to check out the battery grip. I can see how that would be really helpful.

about the grip dont just get it because everyone says you should there are downsides

1) the battery in the 7D and 5D is great and its easy to quickly swap out when they do run out

2) the grip adds considerable bulk, be fully aware of this i got use to shooting with 1D's and the bulk doesnt bother me but let me tell you begining to shoot with a 5D and not having that extra grip is like a breath of fresh air, its lighter slimmer easier to put in a bag and i took the tripod foot of the 70-200 and they go together really really well. I have a grip for the 5D just in case but i've never used it yet.

3) with the grip installed i can see a reduction in the level of weather sealing you will get

4) gripped cameras draw alot of attention you might not always want that attention

so my advice is to try and borrow someone elses grip for a couple of days see if it suits YOU not others on a forum then if it does look at getting it but to be honest spend that money on lenses or flash first.

-1 on the battery grip. Look this is completely personal preference, but I find them unnecessary in every respect. Maybe it's just the way my hands are, and their ability for dexterity, but I can move the camera around better when it's the size of the 7D, and not the 7D + Battery Grip. I'd tried grips before, and I'm always better off without them, I prefer the smaller overall camera. Also Neuro suggested a hand strap, I personally would avoid that as well, I say that because I walk around dangling the 7D's hand grip off my fingers and it just isn't going anywhere, especially not if it's actually being held. A hand grip is probably more likely to drop the camera while your getting your hand out of the thing.

Again all personal preference, but give me a custom shoulder strap over a hand strap any day and please make my cameras smaller, not bigger, thanks.

+1 on the rapid strap, If you dont want to pay so much the ebay ones are just as tough and cost alot less, i use both.

I highly dont recommend getting this black rapid strap though
http://www.blackrapid.com/product/camera-strap/rs-5/

It flops around when you bend over and the shoulder part doesnt stay where it should

the double or sport should be good though
