Are New Features Coming to the EOS R5 Mark II & EOS R1 in February?

It would certainly be nice but not holding my breath.
Me neither. Not sure if the R6III processor is similar, but they've made smaller (but significant) functional changes that could be coming, like:
- Level stays on while recording
- Punch-in focus assist while recording
- Magnification cancels with shutter half-press

I have been quite annoyed by precapture not being able to be bound to a button at first. But by now I have found my workaround and have adapted to it.
I use back button focus and just keep pre capture on all the time. Pressing the shutterbutton fully for a normal burst and half pressing it, when I want precapture to do its thing.

The open gate thing is nice to have I guess, but I don't really know, what all the fuzz is about. Never had the feeling that recording in 8k DCI had me longing for even more pixels to crop my image.
Shutter angle would be awesome though.
I have Pre Capture on the Quick control screen, push the q button on the back, and set to on, or turn it off. It takes a few seconds to do in the field. Fastest way I have found to turn it on or off when shooting birds.

When someone is on the fence, then even such small feature can decide. The R8 it a good example. Besides IBIS, there’s no a real dealbreaker. But when you add all the small things then you buy the R6 if you’re not on a tight budget.

I’m sure budget is a major factor for many buyers. Canon knows this, which is why the EOS RP remains 'current' in the lineup even though it's almost 6 years old. Personally, budget isn't really an issue but I chose the R8 over the R6II for use as a FF travel camera due to its smaller size.

I've not seen any mention/requests for ages now re the AF and battery performance of the R5/2.

Is everyone now satisfied with that?...it seemed to be a major stumbling block a while ago but has magically disappeared from any forum mention I've seen recently....:)

No way canon improve AF on a body already released... That's the main selling point of the newer model at each iteration. + R5 MK2 AF is already top tier.

Extend Battery life would be cool but not sure it's possible with current hardware.

Why do you say that? Didn't Canon release several autofocus improvements for the R5/R6? For example, FW 1.5::unsure:

Are you saying you believe that was a "one-off" thing for the Canon R5/R6 generation, perhaps because they were still establishing a foothold in the mirrorless market, but going forward we shouldn't expect the same?

I'm hoping for some AF improvements for the R5II and R1. Don't get me wrong, I agree with you that the R5 II's AF (R1's AF) is (are) already top notch. But.... I'm always hoping for more :).

"EOS R6 Mark III can have precapture binded to a button,"

Does this refer to customizing a button to turn the precapture on and off? That was already available in R6ii, I am surprised if it wasn't available in R5ii or R1. Probably you mean something else.

I mean yes they already improved it a lot compared to first R5, I assume they will want to keep things to push people to R5 MK3 in a few years aside global shutter, vario angle screen and better AF/ISO I can't see many things, as the R5 mk2 is already such a great camera body.

But yes of course i will be the first one happy if they improve the R5 MK2 AF but I don't really expect it.

Whaaaaat Fw 1.5? (and 1.5.x) It made my R5 a useless piece of whatever...

It could not focus to mid distance items. I had to rollback to 1.4

Some time I upgraded to 1.7 and afterwards continued up to 2.1.0. Now it's OK (No need to proceed with 2.2.0 and 2.2.1 ....)

I’ve been loving my R1. When I had the R5, I had to make too many work arounds to be satisfied with using it. In the end, I sold it. That being said, I have been able to customize the R1 for my needs and to my liking. The only issue that Canon needs to address ASAP in the firmware is to “allow magnify view while recording both internal and externally viewed”. Although I do use a 5” monitor, 8” monitor, and 24” monitor, I am a rare case. When manual focusing, peaking only helps so much especially on the tiny flip out screen. The magnify view is essential to nail manual focus when racking.

The only feature that would tempt me is solid proof that the battery issue of R5II is being solved for good and that R5II works flawlessly (OK we will never be certain 100% for the second one).
