Lately I purchased a 50 1.8 original in mint condition for my wife. She loves the lens but we need to get a protective filter so we can "keep" it mint but not sure what the best is for that lens. I prefer b+w filters but am open to suggestions though. Thanks

the question is if you are willing to invest in quality filter that is almost the price of the lens to keep it in mint condition?

or you want just some cheapo, which could be degrading the image quality...

I want the best. Because if anything happens to the lens than I can use it on any other lens with that size filter thread. Or I could sell it if I had to. The problem I have is that I don't know which one to get that has the least distortion.

If you want the best then B+W mrc nano uv or clear in correct diameter is the right for you

UV is useful when you plan to use film camera too

First I used Hoya filters, but I personally think they are much harder to clean, what can cause some scratches while doing so

I use remarked promaster filters on my L lens they are dust resistance and water will actually ball up and roll off the filter. the digital hgx with repellamax coatings . I think it a hoya filter
something to consider. and I too have a mint 50mm 1.8 lens it even has the passed JCII sticker still on it. but I don't use any filter on it I feel the lens is almost new but the electronics are almost 30 years old and don't want to put a extra load on the focus motor.
