Canon today expands it’s CINI lens lineup with a 20mm T1.5L.

MELVILLE, N.Y., March 28, 2018 – Canon U.S.A. Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced the launch of a new addition to the Cinema EOS System: the CN-E20mm T1.5 L F lens – a full-manual 20mm Cinema Prime Lens for EF Mount cameras. A popular focal length, the 20mm lens delivers exceptional optical performance in a compact form factor. With the introduction of this new lens, Canon further enhances its EF Cinema Lens family to meet a diverse range of cinematic and video-production needs, further contributing to the world of cinematography.

“As Canon continues to expand its reach in the cinema space, we are thrilled to introduce the CN-E20mm T1.5 L F lens, further expanding a robust line up of Cinema Prime lenses,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, president and COO, Canon U.S.A., Inc. “This new lens will provide users with an option in-between our 14mm and 24mm lenses, giving greater flexibility for their scene framing. Canon is excited to see the projects our users create with this lens and Canon Cinema cameras.”

The new CN-E20mm T1.5 L F lens can provide 4K resolution from the center of the images to the periphery, providing high image quality for Canon cameras that feature full-frame sensors such as the new EOS C700 FF digital cinema camera. In addition, the 11-blade aperture diaphragm alongside a T number1 of 1.5 allows the lens to provide beautifully soft bokeh. Like all Canon Cinema Prime lenses, the CN-E20mm T1.5 L F lens features warm, natural-looking tones, 300 degrees of focus ring rotation, and minimized focus breathing.

Since the launch of the Cinema EOS System and EF Cinema Lenses in November 2011, Canon has greatly expanded the EF Cinema Lens offerings. The lineup—which includes the Prime, Zoom, Compact Zoom, CINE-SERVO and COMPACT-SERVO series of lenses—has become very popular for a wide range of users. With the introduction of the CN-E20mm T1.5 L F lens, the lineup now boasts a total of 21 lens models. This expansive line of lenses provides cinematographers with even more options to choose from, which can support enhanced content creation for a variety of uses and shooting scenarios.

The CN-E20mm T1.5 L F lens is scheduled to begin shipping in fall 2018. For more information please visit usa.canon.com/provideo.

"Inspired by Sigma" (who is creeping into cinema lens market)

I would be happy with a substantial upgrade of the EF 20/2.8 that I previously owned. I would prefer a smaller and cheaper f/2.8 than an expensive beast that the f/1.4 would be. Given the relatively recent 35/2, 28/2.8 and 24/2.8 IS lenses plus the 24/1.4, I think a 20/2 is unlikely.

Same here: Where are the lenses for those who cannot afford the newly developped beasts and/or do not want to lug them around ...

I am surprised that they haven't announced the stills version first. I think the 35mm version of the cinema lens came out before version II of the 35L, but the rest of the lenses are all based on existing still lenses with different coatings and mechanics.

Ditto. I fully expected a Cine 100mm or a stills 20mm first. We will definitely see a 20mm L Stills lens in the future since Canon likes to pull double duty now on their formulas. Same thing Zeiss is doing with their CP.2s. I've been hoping that they would turn the 100mm 2.8 L Macro into a 100mm Standard Cine prime. I suspect that, or an f/2 (T/2.1) 100mm Cine prime will appear in the next year or two. If they go with f/2 instead of switching the macro over, then we would probably wait a bit longer, but see a 100mm F/2 L series stills lens as well, which would be a double win. [Zeiss' Cp.2 100mm is T/2.1 for reference]

Zeiss has several more focal lengths than canon in the cine market, and some of them a bit redundant, but I don't think Canon would add past the 20 and probably the 100 in the future for a while. If they ever did add more I'd bet it would be the 28, and a slimmer possibility of a 16, but really not likely as that is more of a focal length canon focuses on in their zooms. Some people do prefer the 28 over the 24 though, especially with the new 24 & 28 IS USM stills primes, the 28 is a bit sharper and better in the corners.

For reference Zeiss carries 15, 18, 21, 25, 28, 35, 50, 50 Macro, 85, 100, & 135mm cine lenses in their cp.2 series {same minus the macro & super speeds with the new cp.3s}

Are you sure the cine 35mm is based on the new 35L? I would think it's based on the old one or is a separate construction, as there was no BR Element mentioned, when the cine lens was released.

I know the coatings for all the cine lenses are different than the coatings on the still lenses. That being said, I have no idea which 35mm it's based off of, but it would make more sense for it to have been the newer one.

The CN-E 35 was released well before the 35L v2.

Edit:
Just looked it up. CN-E 35 was announced in 2013 and I believe the first copies started shipping end of '13/early '14, because I took delivery of my set(minus the 35 because it wasn't available yet when I ordered) just as the 35 begin hitting the street. The 35L v2 was announced in August 2015.

I may very well add this when it's released. At times we definitely need something wider than 24, but not as wide as 14. But what I'd really like to see is a 100mm macro cine, like what Tokina has. Well, that and a 70-200 T2.8 or 2.9 cine zoom and a user swappable mount system for their primes to go from EF to PL with full data. Duclos does a mount conversion on the primes, but it's expensive and they have to be sent off to be converted. It's really convenient and useful being able to convert my 17-120 from PL to EF and back at will and retain full data, power and communication with both mounts.
