I figure it will be compatible with the old cameras, but it will have a new authentication chip to ensure that old batteries aren't compatible with the new cameras. ;D

Judging by the LP-E4N which came out with the 1D X, that won't be the case.

I previously mentioned in a post that the battery almost certainly will have additional anti-counterfitting measures, and that future camera firmware upgrades may put them into place.

There is a distinction between a battery that claims to be a genuine Canon battery, and a third party battery that lists its own brand. Canon firmware asks if a battery is branded Canon , and locks it out as counterfeit if the user responds yes. If the user says no, then he can use the battery.

The issue is that the firmware seems to be unreliable and rarely detects genuine Canon batteries as counterfeit.

Either I'm way tired and reading that wrong or you've confused the frick out of me with this Alice In Wonderland Battery Conundrum. Tell me; what would the counterfeit battery say the genuine battery would claim to be?...

LP-E4 was 2300mAh and LP-E4N was 2450mAH, a 6.5% increase in capacity. If there is a similar jump in performance for the LP-E6 to LP-E6N this would be a much welcomed improvement but it's hardly something I'd be screaming from the hilltops. I guess we will just have to wait and see...

If you are unlucky enough to purchase a battery that is a counterfeit, a Canon camera often detects that its not actually a Canon battery.

A message appears on the LCD asking if the battery is marked as a Genuine Canon battery (The camera knows it isn't) If you reply yes then the Camera shuts down.

If you reply No, that means that you have a third party battery that is marked that way. Then, a message appears asking you if you want to assume responsibility and continue using the battery.
