I think L lenses will rely on the external power zoom attachment.

Canon has provided a rear filter gel as well as the common 67mm front filter thread.
Is there a use-case for just the rear gel instead of the front filter given the ease of use of the front filter? I thought that rear gel filters were only for bulbous front element lenses.
Or using both front and back filters at the same time?

In theory, that’s a reason. In practice, probably not. I can’t speak for the 20/1.4 (yet), but on the 24/1.4 I can stack two slim filters and one standard filter with no vignetting. Maybe more, but I only have those three 67mm filters.

I guess that could be true with thick front filters but they are pretty rare now. Slim ones are the most common.
The only other thing I can think of is for balancing on a gimbal but it seems strange that a front slim filter would adjust weight that much.
That said, I have a front filter system from Nisi and there are many other options out there as well. I can stack 3 front filters on a 16mm lens and not have any vignetting. Although the system isn't small, I can change filters easily with fast changing light (sunrise/sunset) without taking the lens off for rear gels.
I haven't used gels before but they seem to be fiddly to cut and use in the field vs a front filter.

The PowerShot V1 is supposed to ship on 08-Apr and the first allotment is probably already in the US. The first allotment of the 20/1.4L VCM likely isn’t, so presumably will be subject to the 24% tariff on Japanese goods imported to the US that is going into effect tonight.
I wonder if the preorder price will change or if Canon USA or B&H will eat the cost of the tariffs. And if they do, how long will they continue doing so? Seems untenable.
I guess we’ll see.

My thoughts as well. It's at least possible that after they raise the retail price they will honor the original price for preorders placed before the tariffs. But I'm not counting on it.

Personally, I think it depends on the angle of view and the front element diameter relative to the filter thread size. I once had vignetting issues with a cheap EF 35mm f/1.4 when stacking Freewell magnetic CPL and ND8 filters. I haven’t had that problem with the Canon RF 35mm f/1.4 VCM. If you’re not seeing any issues on the 24mm f/1.4, it’s probably because the VCM lineup has a really efficient optical design, with smaller front elements compared to DSLR lenses—or even Sony’s mirrorless glass. That also makes them better balanced, I’d say.

It is definitely easier to carry around single stackable filters but it can be tricky to tighten/loosen CPL filter if you put them on too tightly.
I moved to a 100mm system so once the step up/carrier is mounted then it is simple to change/stack filters. I use Nisi but there are plenty of others.
